Compass Bank Reviews

NSF
I have direct deposit. When my funds go into the bank they withhold my funds for two days and run all my debits through and then run my deposit and direct deposits through. I have two accounts with this bank. I can transfer funds direct from one accout to the other and they still withhold my funds. On transfers the money is put immediately into my account but they turn around and take it back out. This causes my transactions to go into overdraft. I got a nsf charge through the mail and showing that I had 600 dollars in my account and bounced a 5 transaction. I have recently changed banks to were all the credits go through first then the debits go through. Compass bank runs all the debits through and then the credits so they can try and get nsf charges at 38 dollars a transaction. Friday I spoke with a banker on the phone and they even lied to me over the phone after I make an 800 dollar deposit. I don't recomend this bank to no one. I have had a lot of friends and family tell me how sorry this bank does business with there customers so they can make money off of them.

Holding deposits to generate NSF fees
Count me in for a Class Action law suit against Compass Bank!!!

I will spare you all the gory details, but the bottom line is that Compass bank puts a hold on deposits to generate NSF fee income. Whether it be cash or check (for example, direct deposit of your payroll check). They claim it's because they are not an "online" bank, whatever that means. It's really just a big scam that enables them to have debits clear before credits generating NSF fees. I have done my research, and this has happened to many many people. And it's not because we don't know how to manage our money. It's because we are at the mercy of this ruthless bank that has our money and is using it to generate as many NSF fees as possible.

I am an accountant and have a masters degree in finance, and yet I can't seem to keep my head above water with this bank!!! I have never had this problem before banking with Compass, and it was not by choice because they bought out Texas State Bank. I have closed my account and advise others to do the same. It's impossible to manage money that Compass decides to put an indefinite hold on regardless of when you deposit it or if it's cash or check. The bankers will assure you that it's immediately posting to your account and it's days before the tricky scam they are running pans out. And you get a different story from each person you talk to and no one is held accountable for what they tell you. They tell you the calls are recorded to ensure better customer service, but when you ask them to pull one of those recorded phone calls to prove they are lying to you, it conveniently cannot be done.

Compass bank, you are so good at this!!! And come to find out, it's been happening for YEARS! I would love to know just how much income you are generating by this, but it has to be one of your top sources. Let's join together to put a stop to this!!! Contact me at [email protected] if you have been victimized by Compass!

Will Not Honor Thier Customer's Checks
My mother wrote me a check for my birthday. Long story short... I wanted to cash the check & was near the bank it was written on. I went into Compass Bank, the bank the check was written on. I handed the cashier the check & my driver's license. She told me that I would have to pay a $7.50 fee to cash the check because I did not have a bank account at Compass. I told her I banked at another bank & would not pay them $7.50 to honor a check written by one of their customers. I told her I had a check written to me that was to be drawn from their institution & I wanted her to honor that check. She refused unless I paid the fee. I did not cash the check. I refuse to give Compass Bank a dime to honor their customer's checks.

It is time that we, as consumers stand together & let the banking industry know that we are not going to put up with their extortion methods any longer.

Excessive charges and horrible customer service
I used my debit card to make a 25.00 purchase. Little did I know that I was short a couple of dollars in my account. I didn't think charges would go through if the money wasn't in the account. I mean it's not a 'credit' card. The charge went through and a few days later I get a notice from the bank about an 'overdraft' fee. O.K., I chalked it up to 'now I know', and was set to pay the fee. I couldn't get to the bank due to my conflicting work schedule that week. When I did make it in to take care of the situation, I discovered that I now had a 75.00 charge added to my account. I asked to talk with someone in charge. The woman that I talked to was very rude and treated me like a hot check felon. Since then, the charges have just continued to climb. I have tried several times to rectify the situation, even agreeing to pay the 75.00 worth of charges, to no avail. I do believe that a person should take responsibility for their mistakes but I refuse to pay over 250.00! Do banks no longer have any laws to answer to? I mean I know that they run the world, I guess I just thought they would do it with some pretense at honesty.

Awful bank
I have been self employed for nearly 13 years and have managed to keep my head above water through the economic ups and downs. In the early part of 2006, I moved my commercial banking to Compass Bank, huge mistake, and opened two business checking accounts and accepted a small $10, 000 business line of credit.

At the time I had an excellent credit score of 759 and was managing to make ends meet in this competitive marketplace.

From time to time I would use my line of credit to purchase equipment and it pay back out of profits. There were times I would use most of the $10, 000 line and pay back most when the projects were completed. Over time as the economy declined I would use more of the line and pay back less but always made the payments.

I never missed a payment, I repeat, I never missed a payment and was never late with a payment and always paid at least double the minimum payment due.

Sometime in mid-2008 I received a letter from Compass Bank. Not a phone, not a warning, just a form letter stating that “due to information obtained in a recent credit report we have closed your business line of credit. Please destroy all checks and deposit slips associated with this account. You are still obligated to pay the balance…"

What had happened was that in April of 2008 I cosigned for a $24, 000 auto loan for a friend and the additional debt caused my credit score to drop. Evidently, Compass Bank pulls a credit report from time to time just to keep up with the credit worthiness of their customers. I have no problem with that practice. What I do have a problem with is that if they had a model customer for all these years wouldn't a courtesy call be in order before pulling the plug on a tool so important to a small business?

Fully accepting the fact that I owe Compass Bank the money I continued to make the payments as I always had even though I no longer had use of the account. As 2008 came to a close, it was increasingly difficult to generate new business. Businesses were holding off spending pending the outcome of the presidential election and committed contract were being pushed into 2009.

As income diminished and bills continued such as rent, utilities, phone, not to mention gasoline prices, the now closed, much needed line of credit had to move to the bottom of the list of priorities. I was no longer able to keep up with the payments. I literally had no income for the last quarter of 2008 and the beginning of 2009 and was barely living out of reserves.

Finally, in March of 2009, the companies that had postponed projects started to come back to life. On March 9th I was back at work once again after months without income. On March 12th I received a call from Anthony Smith in the commercial collections department for Compass Bank. It wasn't the first call, they had been calling for the past three months and every time I explained my current financial situation and how it was exacerbated by them closing my line of credit without so much as a phone call.

I explained to Mr. Smith that I had only just returned to work three days prior to his call and that I had every intention of making good on my loan and getting back on track. I was proud of my 759 credit score and had every intention of regaining it.

Mr. Smith was unsympathetic and demanded that a payment be made during his call. I explained once again what I had been going through over the past three months and only returned to work just three days ago and haven't been paid yet. I went onto say that I would make a payment next week once I knew exactly how much I was going to make. Mr. Smith, apparently not happy with what he was hearing, yelled at me saying that I have his number and to call him when I was willing to work with him. I was telling him that I was cooperating and had every intention to cooperate he abruptly hung up on me.

So, here it is the 12th of March and I haven't paid March rent, utilities, or phone yet and hoarding the last $1, 135 to my name to the last possible moment. On March 13th I decided that I couldn't hold out any longer and went to my Compass online banking service to pay these bills since I knew I would getting a paycheck the following week. I was shocked at what I found.

Mr. Anthony Smith had closed my business checking account and processed a $2, 000 debit against an account he knew only had a $1, 135 balance. And, Mr. Smith did this without my knowledge or my permission.

Mr. Smith knew that the balance in my account was only $1, 135. The $2, 000 debit placed my account a negative $894 with other transactions pending. This caused seven $38 NSF charges and another $42 in OD fees. As of this writing my account stands closed with a negative balance of $1, 707.99 and is increasing $7.00 per day, for every day the account remains negative.

Overcharged
After reading several entries posted on this site, I have to believe that it isn't just my imagination, but that Compass bank has adopted accounting practices with the express intent of getting as much money from their customers as possible in overdraft fees.

I couldn't understand why I could never get my checkbook caught up. Like most other people in today's economy, I am forced to use the overdraft 'protection' offered. Unlike most people, I did NOT become a customer of Compass bank by choice. I was a member of Texas Bank, perfectly happy, then here comes Compass Bank.

For those of you Compass bank employees chiding us 'losers' for not keeping our accounts balanced, all I can say is that I hope you never have need for compassion. Karma being what it is, you're going to writhe on a pole before you get any.

When I spoke to one of Compass Bank's reps last night, I was given a convoluted explanation of their posting practices. The best I could make out, she was telling me that regardless of when a bank demands payment on a charge (debit/credit, etc), Compass bank goes back to the date the transaction was done. So, basically, even though no demands have been made on Compass bank funds at the time of the transaction and it's two or three days later, they're charging you $36 for it.

Also, Compass bank does two postings a day to keep more 'accurate' records. Best I could tell, this meant they posted all your debits from the night before, but they wait to post your credits until that evening. Therefore, increasing their chances of getting that money out of you.

I would seriously suggest closing your Compass account. After this discussion with a Compass rep, I shut down my direct deposit. These people will NOT get another penny from me. If you're interested in possibly pursuing a class-action lawsuit, please let me know. Even if I don't get one cent, it would be worth it just to get an ounce of flesh out of a group of people with no ethics or integrity.

Auto Loan adding insurance fraudulently
Car Loan through Compass Bank. 1 year ago, Compass sent letter seeking proof of insurance, stating they did not know who my carrier was or that I had one. As all do know for loans at least in So Cal, that information is on the Loan Docs to the Bank.

I called my Ins. Agent. She was contacted by them as well. Huh? They didn't know I was covered, right? At that time, we both sent in the info. Have not heard from them since, well, until now.

Feb '09, I get another letter stating they don't know who my carrier is or that I have coverage. ???? The letter also states to get the info to them by Dec '08 or they will charge me $900 for "their" insurance. It's Feb '09. Again, ???? So, based on the fact we've been through this before and they've knowingly contact my agent directly before, all I can conclude is FRAUD!!!

Do not use Compass or ANY of their services. Based on all the complaints, they are guilty of fraudulent processes for all their services and offerings.

Terrible bank
Compass will sometime hold small bus corp checks out of the blue for 5 to 10 bus days. They have cashed these checks from this fortune 500 comp 17 times with no prob and then decided to start holding all of them. I closed the account turned my checkbooks in at this time and was told the account was closed. I had this account for 10 years with no od's.

A $3 email account came through on the check card that was 'closed' and reopened the account with a 38 over draft charge and 7 dollars a day for overdrwnfree. 9 months later its 1254 bucks over drawn and i have compass collections calling 7 days a week staring at 8 in the morn even on sunday. I have talked to everybody from compass you can think of and nobody cares. Very very bad business practices.

Do not use them
I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH THIS BANK AND IT SEEMS AS THEY MAKE UP WHY FEES AND CHARGES ARE ACCESSED.CUSTOMER SERVICE IS A JOKE AS THEY TRY AND TALK OVER YOU(TIFFANY)AND SHE DID NOT WANT TO GIVE ME HER AGENT ID #.PLEASE BE AWARE THAT ALL REPRESENTATIVES HAVE A WAY TO BE TRACKED SUCH AS AN AGENT ID# OR CODE AS THEY WILL NOT GIVE THEIR WHOLE NAME FOR SECURITY PURPOSES WHICH IS UNDERSTANDABLE...I MEAN IF YOU HEIST PEOPLE'S MONEY FROM THEIR ACCOUNTS WHOULD YOU GIVE YOUR WHOLE NAME? EXACTLY..WELL AFTER THEY WRONGFULLY TOOK $152.00 IN SOME OF THE FEES OUT OF MY ACCOUNT AND BROUGHT MY ACCOUNT TO A POSITIVE STATUS FINALLY.COMPASS BANK FIGURES THEY WILL TAKE AND CHARGE ME A NSF CHARGE AND THEN TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE THEY CHARGE ME FEES ON THE FEES THAT THEY GIVE ME.SORRY IF I IT DOES NOT SEEM CLEAR I AM REALLY IRATE AS TO HOW THIS CAN HAPPEN.AND JUST THINK HOW MANY PEOPLE OVERLOOK THEIR STATEMENTS.THEIR IS A LESSON LEARNED HERE...ALTHOUGH I WOULD REALLY ENJOY CARRYING AROUND POCKETS FULL OF MONEY AND REACH IN AND SPEND WHAT I WANT WHEN I WANT WITHOUT A FEE..I WILL KEEP IT SIMPLE AND SAY THIS. I DOUBT THAT YOU WOULD LET ANY DOCTOR OPERATE ON YOU..SO WHY LET YOUR WHOLE LIFE'S WORTH OF HARD EARNED MONEY SILENTLY SLIP AWAY FEE BY FEE??
