Outrageous NSF practices
Compass has done this to me a total of 3 times, I was able to get my money back the first time but no luck on the other 2 times. This current time I had a balance of 458.02 and spent 487.35, a difference of 29.33, and one of my items was 27.00; so how is it that I end up with 6 nsf fees instead of 2. Well the way it was explained to me was because they had to pay their fees first, which caused the other 4 items to overdraft. On tope of that one of the representatives even told me that my money was being held for 2 of the items, but then I had 2 other things post (while they are still holding the other money) and instead of paying the other 2 they decided to charge me overdraft fees for those, then pay their overdraft fees, so then when the other 2 items posted, guess what, yes, more overdraft fees. What an evil bank, preying on the poor consumers, as if our economy isnt bad enough.

Overcharged
After reading several entries posted on this site, I have to believe that it isn't just my imagination, but that Compass bank has adopted accounting practices with the express intent of getting as much money from their customers as possible in overdraft fees.
I couldn't understand why I could never get my checkbook caught up. Like most other people in today's economy, I am forced to use the overdraft 'protection' offered. Unlike most people, I did NOT become a customer of Compass bank by choice. I was a member of Texas Bank, perfectly happy, then here comes Compass Bank.
For those of you Compass bank employees chiding us 'losers' for not keeping our accounts balanced, all I can say is that I hope you never have need for compassion. Karma being what it is, you're going to writhe on a pole before you get any.
When I spoke to one of Compass Bank's reps last night, I was given a convoluted explanation of their posting practices. The best I could make out, she was telling me that regardless of when a bank demands payment on a charge (debit/credit, etc), Compass bank goes back to the date the transaction was done. So, basically, even though no demands have been made on Compass bank funds at the time of the transaction and it's two or three days later, they're charging you $36 for it.
Also, Compass bank does two postings a day to keep more 'accurate' records. Best I could tell, this meant they posted all your debits from the night before, but they wait to post your credits until that evening. Therefore, increasing their chances of getting that money out of you.
I would seriously suggest closing your Compass account. After this discussion with a Compass rep, I shut down my direct deposit. These people will NOT get another penny from me. If you're interested in possibly pursuing a class-action lawsuit, please let me know. Even if I don't get one cent, it would be worth it just to get an ounce of flesh out of a group of people with no ethics or integrity.

Overdraft robbery
In March of this year I had over drafted my account by $6.00. I had found this out on a Monday and was getting paid on Friday.
I had thought nothing of the enormous $38.00 fee I was incurring because a few days later I would be paying the NSF amount in my account.
By the time Friday had come along my NSF fees were $266.00 for a $6.00 overdraft!! I called because ofcourse this is ridiculous. They refused to work with on these outrageous fees!! If I would have paid that $266 dollars I would have not even been able to buy groceries for just my son to eat for the next week. Being robbed by the bank I figured I would just slowly pay it off.
But to my surprise Compass bank charged the following daily for 30 days for a negative balance.
1st 7 days was $38 a day.
Next 7 days $21 a day with an additional charge of $29 every 7 days. The last 7 days was $7.00 a day.
Making a grand total of $696.00 in fees for a $6.00 overdraft!! Is this a bank or a loan shark?!?!?

Overcharged
Compass bank wanted My thunb print to cash a check drawn on their bank then they had the nerve to tell me that it would cost me 10% of the value of the check to cash it! They need to put 'Their' thumb print on it. They are getting away with bank robbery in reverse and need to be stopped now!
Is this the way to grow your customer base? If ANY banks should fail and go away for good, CompASS should be one of them. Everybody should read this and boycott Compass bank. Their policy makers need to be locked up in jail.

nsf fees
I was a customer of Compass Bank when it was Texas State Bank and never had any complaints. The employees of the bank were always helpful and understanding. I don't know what happened to those employees and their attitudes when the bank switched over. They are now rude and not very sympathetic.
My complaint is with their shady practices involving NSF fees.
I had $32 dollars in the bank on Sunday and knew I had to watch what I was spending. So when I decided to get the kids something to eat, I knew I couldn't spend very much. We spent about $13, so that left about $19 On Monday, there was a $10.00 service fee taken out, which left $9 in the bank. So Tuesday morning, after much talk and thought with my husband I decided to withdraw $220 to pay some bills that needed to get paid. I understood that I would be charged a $38 fee. On Friday of the same week my paycheck got direct deposited, and I needed to check the balance and found that the bank had charged me a fee for the debit I made on Sunday when I had money in the account to cover it. My husband called the 1-800 number and was told that the debit made on Sunday was taken out of the account the next business day, which would be Monday. That would have been fine because I had the $32 dollars in the bank on Monday. But what the bank did was post the debit made on Sunday, which was actually posted on Monday, on Tuesday afternoon. That means that they took out the $220 that I debited, then took out the $13 that was posted the day before, resulting in two $38 fees. If it sounds confusing, that's because it is. The representative on the phone could not explain how the the service charge posted on Monday, did not bounce, but the debit made on Sunday did... three days after it was made. Now we are waiting for another representative to decide if we should get one of the NSF fees returned. So I guess we'll cross our fingers and hope someone actually calls us back.

Overcharged
Called the auto teller to find out they charged me a 29.00 service charge. Called and they stated it was a fee for going over the 15 calls a month. Stated never heard of that, Asked if fee could be waived said no. Went into branch and spoke with them about it, nothing could be done. Their reply to me was why did you call 44 times, said did not know. Told them i closing out my account period.
On the subject of nsf's. They hit me for be overdrawn on 7/10 by 1.29 and hit with with 38.00 five days later. This sucks. People should avoid this bank altogether.

Poor Loan Accounting Practices
Simply put: I am being charged for late payments on my car loan despite my check clearing before the date due. This all started when I began making more than the minimum payment. In fact I was doubling up on my payments. I have had no luck getting any action. I have sent Compass copies of my checks with the dates when the checks have cleared. Apparently they are not too happy with the prospect of making less on this loan. Furthermore, I have no luck getting a running balance on my loan. Every time I have called the Customer Support Center, I get a message machine. I have left 7 messages asking for my balance along with letters asking for an accounting on my loan. Look folks, Banks are desperate and this level of service is design to frustrate you to the point where you will cave in and submit to their tactics. I will never do business with this bank ever again.

Illegal Charges
I do not understand how this bank gets away with the things they do. They need to be under investigation. They do not credit deposits made on Friday afternoon until Tuesday? They charge you for absolutely everything. One month I had six fees for on-line bill pay which I had never used. They reveresed the charges but then when I disputed another charge they said I had reached my "maximum" refunds. Hello, the fees were their fault. I was in line one day at another Compass bank and every single person who went up to the window was complaining. The poor teller who had to enforce the rules of this horrible bank. She looked beaten down. They also force you to write a check to yourself to cash it. You cannot write "Cash." I believe this is illegal.

online bill pay
Compass Bank wiped out my online bill pay "by mistake." While they were the ones that erased all my information without my consent... they could not find a way to restore it.
Compass Bank was unwilling to send letters to the companies explaining the error and to take responsibility. Compass Bank told me that I had to re-enter all the information to get the system back up and if I wanted Compass Bank to pay all my late fees (due to their mistake mind you) I would have to contact each company, make sure each company sends a letter showing the fee and then they would reimburse me.
Compass Bank would not even send me a letter explaining the mistake the bank made stating "they don't do that."
So they erased my online bill pay randomly for no reason, would not fix it, would not take responsibility and would not give me any person as a contact point nor allow any email communication.
Can you imagine waking up and your online bill pay is wiped out??? Watch out if you bank with Compass Bank - it can happen and they will NOT help you fix their mistake. AWFUL.
