Medical Disservice
My husband and I started going to Cooper Institute in August 2009 to try to have a baby. We had a consult with a doctor prior to going to Cooper and after various tests the doctor determined we had very little chance of getting pregnant with my own eggs so we decided we would find an egg donor. In our first consult with Dr. Brazile, she told us "you have a very good chance of getting pregnant with your own eggs". We were ecstatic. We went through two failed cycles. After spending $9, 000 we decided to go to the donor office and do what we had gone there for in the first place. After finding a "shared" donor we thought were now on the right track. I called to ask how many follicles the donor had produced and was told 25. This was great because even though we had to split the eggs, we would still get at least 12 for ourselves. About 4 months later we were two days away from our transfer. The day of the donor's retrieval we got a call from Cooper saying the donor had taken her HCG on the wrong day and they were only able to retrieve 4 eggs. Because we were the second couple to choose the donor we were not going to receive any of the eggs. We were devastated and no one there showed any concern or sympathy, in fact they blamed the donor. For the record, the people at Cooper do not communicate. We are never allowed to speak to a doctor unless we schedule a consult which takes 4 weeks. They are cold, uncaring and rude. After this horrible experience we had already spent $21, 000 and although we wanted to run away from this place as fast as we could, they told us they would let us have another cycle where we wouldn't have to pay for anything we had already paid for in this cycle. We went ahead with it. They used the same donor again and this time she had a total of 12 eggs they were split between us and the other recipients. We had a transfer done and got pregnant. My blood levels were normal at first but then started to slow down. I lost the pregnancy after 3 weeks. The nurses never let me speak to a doctor through any of this. When I miscarried they simply asked if I wanted to try again. From the people at the front desk to the nurses and doctors, they are horrible! They use the same cookie cutter formula for everyone. Although this may work for many women there are special cases such as mine. I have severe endometriosis and history of cysts and fibroids. I found out later that the hormones they were giving me should not be given to women with endometriosis or fibroids. I was told by Dr. Check that patients are not treated on a case by case basis. We have decided we can't continue being tortured by these horrible people any longer. Unfortunately this comes after much stress and emotional agony.
