Abusive business practices
My brother attempted to refi an existing ARM as a Fixed Rate mortgage through Countrywide. He was told that they could only help him if he was behind in his payments, which he had not been. Per their instructions he naively let himself fall behind. He was then asked to submit the necessary documents and was then told that he would be contacted and not to call them. The next thing that he heard after having pestered them for an answer was that his house would be sold out from under him at a Sheriff's sale. He lost the house and was given 6 months to get out or he would be evicted. My brother was too proud or embarrassed to ask for help and he knew absolutely nothing about such matters. He panicked, went into a deep depression and on 12/16/08 he shot himself in the mouth with a shotgun, two days before the eviction hearing. This was a man with no credit card debt or any other problems in his life. I have since heard from several other people who were told the exact same thing from Countrywide. Does anyone here have a similar story? I am considering joining or starting a class action lawsuit. I look forward to your replies. Thanks in advance.

Awful, awful, awful
I lost my job, and fell behind on my mortgage. I sent them $3415 via Western Union, to catch it up to current. Western Union has verified that the payment was received by Countrywide the next morning, but Countrywide denies ever receiving it. They now want me to send MORE money, almost $4600, or they are going to start foreclosure.

They refuse any proof from me that it was received (I have a letter from Western Union), and demand another payment. I have found cases on line where they do this all the time.

I filed a complaint with my state Attorney General, as well as the Commissioner of Banking. And if they try to sell my house at sherrif's sale, I am going to sue them. Look up this case - McPherson -v- Countrywide Home Loans. He is suing them for this very same thing.

Appraisal and Application Fee
Countrywide holds my current mortgage. Because of a balloon payment in 2010, and with the low interest rates, we decided to refinance. We looked at several banks and mortgage companies, and decided to go with Countrywide, because their good faith estimate looked the best, and we thought it would be nice to stay with the company. I paid them a $435 loan processing fee. A month went by, we had the appraisal, which looked "great". The day it was to be processed, I received a call saying that the appraisal came in low, and that our closing costs would increase by $1700 and .5 points. I decided to not have them process my loan, but, they would not refund my $435.00.
I then received a copy of the appraisal, which they could not find anything close to the 4.35 acres which our house sits on in Bothell, Wa.
The comps used were 1 acre parcels in the area, and they use some sort of conversion for a single family dwelling.
I asked to pay for a second appraisal and was denied.
Looking back, I noticed there was no market value of our home on the good faith estimate.
I feel this is done so that Countrywide can get you to give them money for the application fee, based on numbers that are incorrect. Then at closing make up for it by telling you the appraisal came in low to make the loan to value ratio in their favor, so they can add extra points and closing costs, that were should of been up front in the first place.

Fraudulant Advice
My husband works with a young guy who is buying a home through Countrywide Mortgage. Because he does not qualify for the loan (reason #1 why this country is in this bad mortgage situation), they advised him to lower his debt (which he will still owe) by getting his car refinanced in someone elses name. This sounds fraudulant to me. The rules and formulas are in place for a reason. If you have to pull a scam to qualify for the loan you obviously cannot afford it. I wish that I knew who to report this to as I feel they are stealing my money to help companies like Countrywide stay in business, but Countrywide has no intention of changing their policies that got them into trouble in the first place.

We could lose $22,000 due to Countrywide's unethical business practices
My fiance and I applied and were "approved" for a mortgage. It was only asking very specifically several times if we were approved did we finally agree to put forth upfront costs on new home construction upgrades of $22, 000. Against our better judgment we had to utilize Countrywide in order to get the closing costs paid by KB Homes. They instructed us to go ahead and rent our his home while we were in the process. We did so. My fiance has moved in to my apartment where the lease ends in one month. Our closing date is scheduled for November 20th of 2008 (10 days from now). We were just notified by Countrywide 2 days ago that they cannot accept my fiance's off-duty pay, which is additional pay he receives as a sheriff's deputy in addition to his salary, which accounts for approximately $1000/mth. They JUST informed us of this even though they approved us months ago with certainty that we were "set and ready to go". In addition, they informed us that his rental property that is currently rented at $1100/mth has decreased in value within the last two months that they now they cannot approve our loan as they cannot accept any of the rental payment we are receiving. We are at risk of losing our $22, 000 if we are not able to get a mortgage for this home. Again, we close in 10 days and don't know what to do. What's so frustrating about this is that getting our representative at Countrywide to even return calls during the 4month process was nearly impossible. Even our KB representative was frustrated. We've been screwed out of $20, 000 and we have no home! WE CAN'T UNDERSTAND HOW THEY ARE ABLE TO DO THIS TO PEOPLE.

Rip off
This company preyed on me when I was most vulnerable, right after a divorce. They promised me a better loan with better interest, and an ARM would be the best thing for my situation. Little did I know that the best for me would have been to stay with USDA. My payments with USDA would never have gone up to more than $758 per month. My payments are with countrywide, $995 and HSBC $298 (countrywide sold a partial to HSBC. Over half my salary. They refuse to refinance me, they just keep modifying the loan, but not to any help to me. I am moving towards foreclosure, I have been temporarily off work to due a surgery and have fallen behind in my payments. I feel hopeless in catching up, and just feel this person who had me sign these papers knew I was under much emotional distress and she also completed the paperwork, taking my ex/husband off the title of the home by using out dated information and falsified paperwork.

Scam and cheating
Refinanced in early 2008 with Countrywide Mortgage.Countrywide did not accept appraisal from appraiser, home was appraised at $270, 000.00 in January 2008.We wanted to refinance out of a interest only loan to a fixed conventional loan. New loan was to be $214, 000, Countrywide would not accept appraisal at $270, 000 and had their valued opinion/guess value come back at $245, 000, so that we would have to pay PMI. If we had to refinance, $250, 000 or so I can almost bet they would have accepted the appraisal at $2700, 000, but because we only had to refinance with a loan of $214, 000 they valued our home at $245, 000 just so we would have to pay PMI. We as consumers pay a lot of money to licensed appraisers for their services to have a company like Countrywide do and say as they wish. It appears that the services we all pay for on appraisals are wasted and Countrywide can do as they please with our American dream of owning a home. It took me 2 e-mails, and 4 phone calls to finally get a copy of the paperwork that I should have gotten the closing in March, 2008. Countrywide Mortgage didn't want us to see or have a copy of their value opinion/guess value.

I urge ALL consumers who have a problem with Countrywide Mortgage to file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, I am putting my complaint package together and filing a complaint against Countrywide Mortgage. If all who have a problem with Countrywide Mortgage do the same as I am, The Federal Trade Commission has to do something about this company. The Federal Trade Commission investigates all complaints, so lets ALL file a complaint against Countrywide with the Federal Trade Commission and STOP this unfair practice from Countrywide Mortgage. The more information you provide the Federal Trade Commission the better, so get your cases in order and file. Let the consumer provale!!!

Poor customer service
I financed my home with an ARM with the promise Countrywide would give me a better percentage rate when my 3-year period was up. When the time came, by interest rate went up to more than 9%, resulting in a more than $500 a month increase in my mortgage payment effective Feb 2008. In January of 2008, when I realized I could not handle the payment, I filed paperwork with Countrywide's Home Retention team for a home loan modification. After finally being contacted by my counselor and filling out the loan information, I again called several weeks later to find out the loan had been approved. However, she did not know this, and it became immediately apparent Countrywide's internal communication methods were and are very poor. She had told me when my application was pending not to make any payments until my loan modification papers were received and, at that time, I should make my new payment. I finally received the papers, signed, and returned them with a check covering late escrow fees and some processing fees to the tune of over $1400. I was also assured my account would be returned to current standing when the loan modification was finalized. However, I continued to receive phone calls and letters telling me I was delinquent, and even though I have made my first new payment under the loan modification terms, I am still receiving threatening and harassing calls and certified letters. When I call to complain to customer service and explain the process I started many months ago to avoid just this situation, I am told just to tell the callers, for the umpteenth time, what is going on and explain to them my situation. I am told the letters and calls I have been receiving are automated and cannot be stopped. This is baloney! Countrywide's internal communication methods are extremely poor. Also, since receiving my modification package, I have tried many times to speak with my counselor who is always unavailable. She does not return messages left, and her supervisor has also been left messages in this regard. The customer service representatives also have left messages asking the Home Retention Office to update my account, and this still has not been done. I just received another call from a debt collector asking what I intended to do about my overdue account, and I "lost it" for the first time. I am in a customer service field for the US Government, and this is no way to treat your customers, especially those who anticipate they will have a problem, contact the company, do all they are asked to do, and then are still harassed with calls and threatening letters. I never had a late payment on either my first or second mortgage prior to this time, and I will never again work with Countrywide. I will also make sure none of my friends or family do either. This is very sad.
