D & G Auto Repair - Paramus, NJ Reviews

February 23, 2007
do not use this mechanic
Sept. 2006 I dropped my car off at the mechanic because my breaks were "rubbing". Al, the owner, advised me that I needed new front brakes. He replaced them for $250. The next day I heard a clunking sound every time I came to a complete stop, and returned to the mechanic only to be informed that the wrong size brake pads were used, but that "it wasn't dangerous". Then, I noticed within a couple of weeks that the brakes were making a very loud high pitched noise so I returned to his shop and asked him to take a look at it. He said that he did not hear the noise when he drove my car around the block and that I just needed to "break them in". About a month or two after that, the noise had not subsided so I returned to talk to Al again. I informed him that he needed to let the brakes warm up before hearing the noise, and he advised me he did not have that kind of time but he would take a look anyway. He drove the car around the block, did not hear the noise and sent me on my way. After about another month of this horrific noise which was now coupled with a new rubbing noise I brought the car back and told him he needed to fix it. He again told me that he did not have time to drive the car to hear the noise, and I reminded him that the noise did not occur until after he "fixed" the brakes the first time. The next day I received a phone call informing me that my brakes were "dry-rotted" after just 5 months and no harsh weather. I was told they would be fixed once again and that they would throw in a new battery and spark plugs which i was in need of. I agreed to this and returned the next day to pick up my car. To my surprise there was a decent size bill awaiting me. When I tried to speak to Al about this, he immediately started ranting in his defense and we were unable to come to any solution.

AND DID I MENTION THAT I HAD AN INFANT IN THE CAR WITH ME THE WHOLE TIME THAT HE PUT SUBSTANDARD BREAKS INTO MY CAR!!!

This is not the first car I have had issues with at his shop. I bout a car that was for sale on his lot a few years back for $1100 and it broke down the first day that i had it in the middle of a busy intersection. He did a "complete overhaul" on it "free of charge". After this, the car would break down after driving more than 60 miles at a time. I was commuting at the time 240 miles almost every weekend. He attempted to fix this problem multiple times over a six month period and I paid out at least $1000 more in repairs for a car that he said was in good condition when i bought it. I was calling a tow truck literally every weekend. I finally ended up donating the car after less than a year because it altogether stopped working.
