Derek Boss Advertising Reviews

Not the job I applied for
I just recently graduated from college, I interviewed with this company in March and they promised me an events coordinator job at a potential $35k if I liked my day of job shadowing. I would be representing sports events, golf courses, resorts and spas! I was so excited! The monday after graduation I go to the DB Advertising office to go on my field interview. The president of the company asked me to have my day cleared between 11am and 8:30pm. I figured it was a big job, with great responsibility if they wanted me to take the entire day off for their company, included with networking, and actually executing an actual event. I wanted to be punctual so I got to the office 15 minutes early, I sat there for almost an hour and a half until I was even allowed to talk to anyone. I was introduced to this girl who was really nice and excited about her work. After about 30 minutes of driving and asking her about event coordinating questions, she asked me why I was asking her about events. We get all the way to Birmingham Mi, and I find out I'm selling golf coupons from door to door. It was completely embarrassing. First of all, their "target market" was just everyone, everywhere. Second, for the amount of work you do, it was a complete waste of time. Third, the golf course was a middle class country club, and we were trying to sell them to the upper middle and upper class. Fourth, they try to tell you to keep going by saying "for every ten people you talk to, at least one person will buy one", why are we trying to reach 10% of our target market? and more importantly the 90% that say "no" are left with a bad impression of the company we're trying to market. At lunch time, we ended up going through the Drive thru, and I had to pay for myself. This girl starts talking to me about pay, and about how to move your way up in the company. It was exciting to learn about, but when I tried to ask her how she gets paid multiple times... at first she said "oh it's different for everyone, so I really don't know how you would get paid", by the end of the night she was telling me how she enjoys getting paid by commission because she has the potential to get paid up to $300 dollars a day. Let me tell you I spend the whole day with her, I found out she'd only had been working with this company for a few weeks and couldn't answer a majority of my questions, we sold 4 packets of coupons...which if the math is right that's about $40 bucks for the whole day. I asked her about gas money, and mileage... fair questions when you're driving door to door all over metro-detroit. IT'S NOT INCLUDED IN YOUR PAY! DB Advertising is not the place to be if you want to get your foot in the door in Advertising! From what I got out of it, if you sign something, get a copy, if you're giving someone your whole day, ask for an itinerary, if they can't communicate to you efficiently, you should just walk out the door.
