Billing
Be Ware. DIRECT ENERGY
Of direct energy. This company is scam, if you are late on paying your bills on time they will charge you 5% of your entire bill then they will charge you $25.00 (Collection Recovery fee) my question to them you are charging me 5% on what I owe then you are charging another $25.00 immediately after. Why should I pay twice for the same reason? I asked this question to many representative at-least four. None of them can give me a reasonable answer all they said is “ this is our policy” this completely a Scam and this big company are nothing but twisting peoples hand and scamming people money and making millions if not billons. Yet again general public is hostage to this big corporation. If you are signing up with any utility company please read this fine print. Also do not sign or agree on anything over the phone. If you need stablish service ask them this question.
What is the cancellation?
What are the hidden charges?
Example : what if you are late. And what are the charges.
If they are charging 5% its acceptable but if they are charging additional charge which they can I believe because they can then it’s not right.
What are the TDSP charges?
Is your cancellation charges are prorated.
Cancelation charges should be prorated
Because you already stayed with them X amount of month and they should prorate your cancellation fees.
Utility company are worse than credit card, pay day chase, or even a robber only because there nothing you can do about it. Consumer should open their eyes and become energy independed

Automatic Renewal of contract
I had a 5 year gas contract with Direct Energy which got completed in Aug 2009. I never consented to renew the contract with Direct Energy. Now I have received a bill with Direct Energy rate of 3 times the market rate for the gas. When I called Direct Energy they advised me that they automatically renewed the contract for 1 year at a predetermined high rate. I requested them to cancel the contract immediately, to which I was told that I will still be billed for next 2 billing cycle at such a astronomical rate. By doing a search on internet I noticed that I am not alone in getting cheated like this. Is there any consumer protection against such practices?

Hydro bill
I have been desperately trying to follow up with Direct energy for the past 3 weeks. I am extremely disappointed with the service and the matter my case has been handled.
In 2006 when we moved to our new house, I signed a contract with DE for my hydro. At that point in time, the representative explained the billing system and mentioned that 5 year contract is beneficial to me. I believed his statement and signed the contract for 9.65 cents/kwh + the other normal charges.
I have compared the bill with my neighbour who has other retailer and his monthly bill is average $100 less/month as he pays tiered rates (5.65 cents up to 600 kwh and 6.6 cents after 600 kwh).
I was shocked see this difference and also got extremely upset with DE as I felt deceived & cheated for all these 3 years.
After knowing the facts, i requested for cancellation forms on 12th Sept. However, till date I have not received anything. I have tried my best to follow up the matter without any success.

Lol what i know!? and they say they will make a request for me and let me wait for 1 to 5 days! OK, and i called on following monday. they say wait for it. OK, called in on Thursday. What you know!! ? suprise!!! Someone there say the request send wrong. They gonna send a request now. and let me call epcor next morning to make sure they received it???? LOL, i am sick with there customer service. when i ask them why they would not call me if there's wrong with it! ? they say they always tell the customer to call back next morning to follow up their cases. which i did not get asked! anyway! bad service ! and i will change to another billing company for sure sometimes soon!!

faulty workmanship
Not a single person has returned calls after repeated messages concerning faulty workmanship that has resulted in the replace of the entire roof and interior damage to our home caused for the workmanship. This has been going on for over 3 weeks and it has become quite disturbing to see a company of this size take no responsibility or show any courtesy to return the many calls that have been made. There is no one that can be reached, executives hide, phone numbers become guarded secrets as if they are a matter of national security. This company should be put on trail for its arrogance.
Can someone get some breathing person that has the ability to pick up a phone and deal with this problem?

Billing Incorrectly
Direct Energy - Incompetent employees. My electric statement arrived on Friday, Aug. 14 (the due date), so I immediately called Direct Energy and told the rep. I wanted to pay a portion of the bill (had never asked to pay only a portion of my bill in my lifetime...was always on time). She said she would waive the $2.95 "pay by phone" and the late charge since I received my bill on the due date. I said I would pay $200.00 toward the Electric bill and the other $78.90 by the Aug. 21. On Monday the $200.00 was taken from my checking acct. We received confirmation that the $200.00 wasn't due until Aug. 21 and the remaining $78.90 was due on Sept. 21. Well, by the time Sept. 21 arrived we had received 4 disconnect notices. They all said that our electricity would be shut off if payment was not received by Sept. 4. Plus, these notices stated I had a past due balance of $81.85. Wrong!!
After talking with a total of 3 people with Direct Energy, I talked with a supervisor who was willing to remove the $2.95 plus the late fee, but said it was all our fault that we broke the Deferred Payment Plan. It was actually the woman I talked to on Aug. 14 who never followed thru with her promises. Anyway this supervisor on Aug. 31 said that there was no way that the $2.95 could have been removed immediately, that it would take 2-3 months. Today I talked with two other people who were not any help and finally talked to another Supervisor who was very helpful (if she follows thru). She stated that the credits could have been done immediately, not in 2-3 months. (This says a lot about the knowledge of the first supervisor's knowledge of company policy, and also about the person I talked with on Aug. 14.) Now the last Supervisor states that she is turning this over to their Investigation Department and I should hear something within 24-48 hours. We shall see...stay tuned! mac

CUSTOMER SERVICE
As like many others, I have had several problems with Direct Energy. I felt the need to not only let consumers know, but also those running the company. I am sincerely hoping that making these key persons aware of how the company is operating, some changes will be made. I would encourage people to write kind, factually-based letters if you are looking for things to change. Here is the contact information that I have found:

Terrible company
Last summer I had a Direct Energy canvaser come knocking on my door. He told me that if I switched to direct Energy, I would get a lower rate for gas and save money in the winter than if I stuck to Maintoba Hydro. This turned out to not be the case. I am paying a few points higher than my local energy and gas company and I am on a 5 year contract that is supposedly expensive to get out of. I called Direct Energy and they said that I shouldnt've been told that I would be paying a lower rate. Now I'm stuck in 5 year contract paying over $300 for gas a month. Who the hell can afford that on a modest income?

Billing
My ultimate complaint is that Direct Energy is so completely incompetent that remaining with them became impossible. During the first 6 months I received my electicity from Direct Energy I only received one bill. They were completely incapable of generating a bill. When the bills finally did start coming there were several conflicting statements that came. We paid each one almost immediately - though it was hard to tell what we actually owed.
My father who switched to Direct Energy at the same time I did had ever worse trouble. In fact he only received his first bill after about 11 months when he and I decided we should move our service because Direct Energy is so incompetent.
That is when things really went wrong. They closed my account and sent me a final bill which I paid 2 weeks before it was due. Almost immediately upon cancellng my coverage I started receiving calls from 1-800-955-3103. When I would answer no one was there but it was clear it was an automated call. On July 3, 2009 my father mentioned to me that he had been receiving calls from an 800# that was driving him crazy because no one was ever there when he answered. He decided to call the # and found out that it was a collection agency looking for me. To be clear, I have not lived with my father for 20 years. As it turns out Direct Energy had turned me over to a collection agency at least 3 weeks before the bill was even due. The collection agency made many harassing calls to both my house and my father's house but NEVER left any messages. I was told these were "courtesy" calls, but no one can explain to me how this was courteous. This collection agency now has all my information including my SS#. Do yourself a favor and avoid them. There are too many better options out there than to deal with them.
