Worst company I have ever had the misfortune to deal with
DirectTV is the worst company I have ever had the misfortune to deal with. I will be cancelling my service just as soon as I possibly can and I will tell anyobe who will listen to steer clear of this company. Their "customer service" (oxymoron for sure) is a joke. It took 2 1/2 weeks to get a rapair person out to fix a broken HD DVR. 2 days later, same problem. When I said just switch to a plain 'ol regular receiver, they said I would have to pay $70, after I already paid $199 for the damn HD DVR.

Awful company
I have been cut off from their internet service because they say I have used it too much. No contract that I signed disclosed this. THey are hiding behind an FCC regulation. So, did they complain to FCC that this would be harmful to consumers? Or did they conspire with FCC to limit their expenses in providing a service that can be cut off vhimsically? I am calling Charter and Cox Monday morning and reporting Direct TV to my congressman and senator. Dirct Tv should be put out of business.

Absolute thievery and fraud
I had been with Direct TV for several years (about 7 or 8 yrs) and as they stated I always bought my equipment from then. About a year ago I "bought" an HD DVR for about 300.00. When I noticed I was getting charged a lease fee of 4.99 mo. I thought "oh this is another mistake", as in the past when they were charging me when they shouldn't because I had purchased not Leased my equipment. When I called in to rectify the situation I was told no I did not buy this piece of equipment for $300.00 I leased!!! I said who in their right mind would pay to lease something for 300.00 + 4.99 a month. I told the rep to look and see that I always purchase. I was told at that time that they no longer sell equipment they only lease. I asked her to show me where I signed saying I leased this equipment. She told me it was on the paperwork I signed when it was installed (by a company, who by the way took my old receiver that I OWNED and they tired to charge me for this receiver also). I told her it said nothing on the paperwork about leasing. Fast forward several months and I decided to cancel my service since the HD DVR never worked most of the time. When I went to cancel they charged me over 100.00 for the rest of the lease they say I signed up for at 4.99 or 5.99 a mo. (it changes at random) they also told me I had to return the HD DVR. When I reminded them that I bought it and to show me where I signed the rep. they told me there was a sticker on the box!!! Since when does a sticker on the box constitute a binding contract????!!!
I told them I would not return until they proved to me that I signed something stating I leased a piece of equipment for 300.00 (equipment I see on ad for free all the time).
Being that they are Direct TV and can do anything they want and ruin my credit they now demanded that I now pay over $500.00 for this HD DVR!!! or they would report me to credit agencies. I decided to go ahead and return while I figure out how to fight them. Now that I have returned the equipment I have now gotten another bill for TAX!!! For the amount of $38.78!!! This is absolute thievery and fraud!!

Awful service
We cancelled the service within 3 days of setup. I was told by two different phone representatives from Direct TV that there would be no charge for cancellation for the first 30 days. I have called Direct TV two more times since that and was assured both times that the cancellation fee would be waived. The most recent call occurred on Sept 4, 2008 at 5:25 pm. Once again I was assured by a representative from Direct TV that the cancellation fee would be waived. I called the sales line on Sept 4, and was again told that I could cancel the service with no fee for up to 30 days. Direct TV and their representatives are telling me that I owe no money, and then submitting a claim to a collection agency who is threatening to take this matter further.

Awful company
We ordered Direct TV for our new home. They installed it on the date requested and it worked for about a day, if that. Once it stopped working we called customer service to have someone come out to fix. Again we scheduled an appointment (several days later) a tech came and couldn't fix it (he didn't bring a ladder to get to reach the dish. He scheduled an appointment for 2 days later (more time away from work) and no one showed. After 1 hour 11 minutes and 20 seconds on the phone with customer service we have another appointmemnt scheduled in 3 days! Of course we have paid the bill already like good consumers. Their customer service was mediocre at best and their understanding was non exsistent. I have never been so frustrated with a company in my life. What is amazing is through all of the phone calls, rebates, complaints and transferred calls all they need to do to make it right is send a tech to the house to fix it. It's the service basics that escape most people.

Problems with DirectTV - Sarah
December 19, 2009
lies about leasing or having contract
I called to cancel - price getting too high AND since I've had DirectTV I have had to reset the satellite over and over again.
I got some run around and 'customer service' just keeps talking and offering this and that. I was not in a contract and I owned my own equipment (which was offered as a start in 06 and must have been old stuff to begin with thru store and installed thru store and rebate and gift card thru store). But throughout it was not so bad and I thought everyone lost the signal all the time.

I was offered FREE (it is what my first sets of receivers were and they were FREE after rebate and FREE installation and Gift Card on top of that)... I was getting haranged about what this would do and what that would do... I accept this FREE offer and then get a bill that is higher than what I was paying - I had been paying low $70 and was trying to reduce my monthly payment. Medical problems of mine (don't want more stress and more expenses) and my husband losing job and now benefits being paid by my paycheck... Anyway, NOW the first bill comes and it is $101. because somehow they adjusted one bill and added something for the next. I payed it and wrote SCAM on the bill and the memo on my check going back to them. Then I get the next bill and find I am LEASING the FREE equipment and they have LIED to me. I call to cancel and the guy I speak to cancels the DIRECTTV stuff using the FREE equipment I am paying for and says all I have to do is rehook old receivers up.
NOT! I have to call them again and ask why that did not work. That gets fixed I am tired of the misleading info and out and out LIES. And we lost signal with the new and old equipment - so how good is DIRECTTV - NOT good at all! And very frustrating.
Now I call a cable company and get them to hook me up AND I call DIRECT TV to cancel. I speak to AMY and she keeps talking about this and that and keeps talking and keeping me on the phone, asks if she can put me on hold. I agree and 5 - 10 minutes later I hang up because you can't get their attention that you are still on the line... I have children that need to get picked up and dropped off, I don't have time to play games and hear more garbage... I do not like being SCAMMED and if I did it to someone, I would go to jail... Customer Service continues talking even when you tell them you want to CANCEL.
Now I get back from pick up and drop offs and call to see if CANCELlation has gone thru and its like I never called... What a ploy - put someone on HOLD until you get tired of the run around and hang up. Now I have JENNIFER who says I have a CONTRACT with DIRECTTV. WHAT CONTRACT?! I would NEVER HAVE AGREED to a CONTRACT AND PAID for a LEASE - I had called to CANCEL DIRECTTV and then the SCAM began. JENNIFER says I will be billed for $300 for break of a CONTRACT I had with DIRECTTV... The lies supposedly are there to set you up and OOPS sorry someone from DIRECTTV lied to you but now you are in a CONTRACT and we lied but you have to pay!

I am seeking out a lawyer to either SUE DIRECTTV for this SCAM or just to get my DIRECTTV cancelled like I wanted the first time I called when the SCAM and LIES began...

Total frustration
Bought a movie. Started watching it before the 24 hours were up. It stopped dead right in the middle. Had to buy again to see the end. I will complain to try and get the second fee refunded. Total frustration.

Overcharged
I canceled our Direct TV service after a year. I mailed them back their receiver and got confirmation that my bill was at 0. The next month I received a bill from them stating I owed them $100. for early termination fee. They said I had agreed to keep the service for 2 years not 1. I did not want to keep their lousy service for another year and never agreed to 2 years. They now have a collection agency after me trying to collect the $100 fee I refuse to pay.

cancellation fees
I have also had problems with Directv. I think we should not let them get away with treating consumers so poorly. I called because my remote control did not work. They said they would send me new equipment I said only if there is no new contract. I said I do not want a new contract. I knew when FIOS entered my neighborhood that i would switch so I did not want a new contract. I made no changes to my account, I did not add DVR (which I really wanted) because I did not want a new contract. Today I cancelled Directv and they told me I was under contract. What part of I do not want a new contract do they not understand? I files a complaint with the BBB and I intend to take as far as I have to. My neighborhood is being wired for FIOS and I would encourage everyone to switch. The ironic thing is I only have 3 months ledft on my alledged contract which can't amount to much money and I also owe them 120. They would be better off to just take what I owe and not squabble about a contract that shouldn't exist. You need two parties for a contract.

Taking away channels
Second time this year now, DirectTV has taken away channels from my Programming Package. 6 month ago they took away ESPN Classic and this time they took away the KIDS channel and a number of other Children's Programming. Their excuse for both was that the channel provider requested DirectTV to make that change and it was not in DirectTV's hands. But get this, those channels are available in the next package if I want to pay extra $5 a month. It seems like this is a great marketing scheme to try not to raise prices, but instead taking away programming and forcing you to pay extra by signing up for the higher package. I'm concerned that next year at this time, I will be paying more for my tv service with half of the channels that I am receiving now. DirectTV's excuse is that their fine print states that programming is subject to change. Is there anyone that the consumers can contact to fight for this? I know that the Better Business Bureau is worthless, but there has to be someone else.
Before you sign up for any cable, or for that matter internet service, my suggestion is that after you talk to them on the phone, follow up with an email and try to get everything you can in writing.
