Early Termination Fee
For financial reasons, I chose to suspend my DirecTV service in 7/08. I was told at the time that I could call on 1/6/09 and cancel my DirectTV service. I called 1/7/09 and terminated my service. I confirmed with the rep multiple times in the phone call that I would NOT be charged an early termination fee (ETF). She assured me each time that I would not. A couple weeks later I received a bill from DirecTV with an ETF on it. I called the next day and was told that because I suspended my service, that my contract was extended the amount of time my service was suspended, therefore I was billed an ETF because my contract wasn't up for another 6 mos. NO ONE EVER in previous conversations with reps mentioned this to me. I expressed this to the reps I spoke with that day. I called, spoke with a first line rep. Didn't get anywhere, spoke with supervisor. After 20 mins. of hold time and researching, I was rudely told that it is a valid fee and that no one in this company will be removing it. I found the Office of the President's phone number located in Boise, Idaho. I called, spent more time explaining my situation, and still got nowhere. After 2 hours of fighting this, I gave up. None of the reps I spoke to were able to answer my one question with any satisfaction from me: How come I'm being held responsible for reps giving me incorrect info and not documenting their 'system' correctly? Instead I was told repeatedly that it is a valid and it will not be removed.

Terrible experience
They have been repeatedly been contacted that they have not completed the contract but since in December 2008 they have yet to provide the local channels for this local or offered a reduction of pricinging. In fact they are charging over 30 dollars more than the agreement stated. They hang up on me when I contact them regarding the situation. I have offered not to press charges due to the problem but nothing has been offered as a restitution for the excessive charging!

Overcharged
We received a bill last May, after about 2 years of service, with an additional $109.00 worth of Pay-per-view charges. Mostly adult titles. We had all pay-per-view activities blocked as we had an Alzhiemers patient in the house sometimes. The odd thing was the movies being billed for were rented 14 months prior. They say the equipment was sitting around and somebody forgot the card in the box. Which was mailed back from an upgrade done after we moved. When we contacted them about this we were told basically that they don't make mistakes, and we needed to pay it now or we would be billed for the remainder of our contract and shut off. We asked for a dispute department, and after several phone calls of people telling me in several ways that they own me and I needed to pony up the dough or else, we finally got one, we sent 2 letters, and 1 fax, and several unreturned phone calls.
Now, we have no TV, and a big bill, that has apparently been sent to collections. Since it is in collections, DirecTV cannot touch it, but the collection agency would surely work with me on this dispute! RIGHT!!! Has anyone ever had a collection agency 'work' on anything for them? I would love to hear about it. Meanwhile, I was told if I paid off now, and paid a hefty deposit now, She would gladly start me with new service. I calmly suggested some contortionist activities for her. Any ideas? Solutions? Related issues?

Overcharged
The other day I received my Directv bill and the package I had ordered went up in price. Six months ago I signed a contract with this company and I have had nothing but problems since. This is the latest issue. I ordered the Choice Package for the special price of $34.99 a month. The first three bills I got were at the regular price of $52.99, so I had to call and straighten this out. They finally got that straight and everything went smoothly for about two months then I get this bill where they increased the price of the Choice package. Which would have been fine had they adjusted the credit to reflect the price I agreed on when I first signed up for the service but it did not.
When I called the company in regards to it the first customer service rep hung up on me. The next one I got could not tell me anything different then the first. They told me that in the 'Customer Agreement' it says that they can increase the price any time they want to. This is absurd.
Working in the construction industry I deal with contracts everyday and once they are agreed upon and signed that is it, that governs what happens on the job. It is apparent that the word 'Contract' means nothing to Directv and they can just do whatever they would like, whenever they would like. So I guess if they would like to jack my bill up to $100.00 I just have to sit back and take it even though I agreed upon a specific price when I signed up for the service.
I am reporting this company to the BBB and the Attorney Generals office in hopes that they can help everyone that this has happened to. This is a warning to everyone who wants Directv or was thinking about getting it, DON'T!!! They are a HUGE RIP OFF and their service stinks, including their Customer Service. I hope all take heed to this message and think twice about having to deal with this company before they get shafted also.

Fraud and scam
I've been a loyal DirecTV subscriber for about 6 years. Always the premium package, HD DVR, etc. Never a complaint (other than the fact that it took the techs about 4 trips to get me setup properly). I started subscribing to DirecTV when it seemed that the local cable monopoly started rapidly declining with respect to customer service.
Several years into my patronage (2005) I decided to try the NFL package. It was OK but, by the end of the year, I wasn't really watching it that much so when DirecTV called to try to sign me up again I declined. Fast forward to 2008, we've been looking for ways to cut a few household expenses. As I went through the old bank statements (we have auto-pay for just about all bills) I noticed that my DirecTV bills had gotten as high as $200 / mo. I knew that the premium package cost around 100 bucks. I know there are a bunch of taxes and surcharges, etc but I figured there was no way those fees could be as much as the service itself.
I get on the line with a customer service person to try to figure out whey the bill is so high. He's going through the charges and the last one he mentions is the NFL package. I tell him I don't get the NFL package and he reiterates that I do. I ask him what channel it is on - when I go to that channel there is a message with a number of where to call to subscribe. The guy tells me that I signed up in 2005 (true) and that in 2006 they sent me something saying if I do NOT want to subscribe again in 2006 that I must check a box. They proceeded to charge me for all of 2006, 2007 and 2008!
Furthermore, he had the onions to tell me that DirecTV had a 'policy' of not refunding NFL package subscribers who had been duped. I, of course, informed him of MY POLICY of not letting anyone steal my money. And MY POLICY is the only one that matters. Several more calls, several more supervisors (some of whom were idiots and some of whom were appalled by the story but who claimed to be powerless to do anything).
First, and most obvious, you don't sell a service by telling someone that they have to say 'no' to avoid it. You can GIVE me whatever service you want - but you only have the right to get paid for the ones that I ask for.
Second, I had trusted DirecTV enough to put them on my auto-pay list. No paper bills, save the environment, etc etc. It just goes to my bank account and I hit 'pay' each month for all of my bills. So DirecTV can pull this shenanigans on just about anybody that uses modern banking and doesn't keep a close eye on the bill from month to month.
After demanding my money back (almost $800!!!) I stopped paying them my monthly bills. Everytime someone called my house about payment I wouldn't let them get their scripted questions out - I just asked them about the status of my refund. They always get off the phone perplexed.
Well, they just shut off the service. So I've talked to my best friend who is an attorney and he said this will be a no-brainer lawsuit. He said that, if I am lucky, they will also report me to the credit bureaus (which will appear malicious to a judge) and will make my suit too large for small claims court. So, a little longer to wait but more hassle and money for DirecTV to pay.
It just stuns me that this company would take a long-time, loyal, premium customer and treat them this way. Not only have they lost my revenue stream forever, there are going to pay legal bills (theirs and mine) and have me bad-mouthing that company forever. By the time this is all said and done I'll bet this little stunt costs them $75, 000 of undiscounted cashflow. Maybe a drop in the ocean to them but so stupid. So stupid.
In the meantime, I have offered DirecTV to be part of my prayer of the month club. With the economy being down I figured some companies might like people to say a prayer on their behalf. The price is a little steep ($10, 000 subscription per year) but if they feel they don't need the service they can always write me a letter telling me that they explicitly DO NOT WANT to subscribe. Until I get that communication from them I can only assume that they want to join the prayer network. My policy is to enforce all debts on firms that do not affirmatively decline membership. That seems fair, right? At least THEY think so...

Terrible company
In the last week of Oct, 08 I requested Internet, telephone and TV service bundle from Verizon. Verizon installed the phone and internet service. Verizon subcontracted my order for the TV service to DIRECTV. At the time of placing the order for this service bundle with Verizon Customer rep, I was not informed about the 2-year service commitment with DIRECTV. Verizon customer service had a third party verification of the order verbally; even then I was not informed of the 2-year service commitment with Verizon for phone or internet and DirectV for TV services.
AFter installation of all three services in the first week of November, I was not satisfied with internet performance. Phone service was OK. I called in the last week of November to cancel the phone and internet with Verizon and returned the equipment. Since there was not service agreement for 2 years with Verizon, I paid for 1 month without any penalty. When I contacted Directv to terminate the service, they requested me to send the equipment which I did in mid Dec 08. I receive a bill for $460 for early termination. I called tyhe customer service in billing of Directv that I had made no such commitment either verabllyh or in a written form, they said such a commitment exists between Verizon and Directv.
Problem is that I was not informed by Verizon at the time of ordering and the technician of Directv did not mention or give paperwork informing of such.
I sent a letter of dispute to Billing of DIrectv and also filed a comp-laint with BBB.

Unexplainable Service
Well where to start... I recently moved back home to my moms house and we were Directv customers about 6-7 years ago.. I'm a big Football fan and I need HD... I received a letter in the mail on how Directv wanted us to be a customer again... My mom is recently a DishNetwork Customer and so was I when i Lived in My Apartment... I took the letter and read it and decided to give them a shot and get another Dish installed So i will have my own Bill.. So I did... They came out 3 days later and Installed the Dish while i was at work and my grandma was home which however she was nice enough to be thier when the Installer/ Tech arrived. I told Directv prior that DO NOT TOUCH the other Satellite Dish and Install a separate one... Well The Tech was Apparently in a hurry and unhooked the Dish Network Dish and Used the connections from Dish network ran about 2 years ago when we got Dish network Installed to make it an easy 30 min job and get on his way.. Little did he know that one receiver ran all 4 tvs in my house... I get a call at work from my mom saying her TV, my grandmas and mine was not working in our rooms... But the directv in living room was fine... He took down the Dish Networks dish and just left it disconnected on the roof.. I couldn't believe what i saw when i looked in the attic.. This was a Friday when i got this Installed.. So i called DTV and It was not a Big Deal told them to just come Fix it back to normal so My Mom and Grandma can have TV in there rooms... No problem we will send someone out on Monday. Cool.. Weekend one Tv Cowboys are on Be fixed Monday right?! Wrong!!! Didnt show up Monday.. Called Tuesday *Tech replied I will be their at 8pm** NOPE!! Tried to call that Tuesday night and his Phone was off! Now im Upset.. Called again and they apologized and made Sure It will be Fixed on Wednesday.. NOPE!! never showed up Thursday NOPE!!! Friday 1 week later he arrives and My Mom is pissed and let the Tech know when he Arrived Their is No Need for Him anymore.. Dish network was coming out to Reconnect the service my mom was paying For that DTV Disconnected... Isn't that Illegal? Oh yes! My mom asked if the Dish network Tech could take their dish down and he Said * No Mam we are not allowed to Touch another competitors Service* The Poor guy had to re run all the wires to get all the Rooms back up and Running took him from 8am to 11 30am to Fix DTV problem... Now i talked to DTV and told them to come get thier Dish i don't want their service anymore its only been a week with POOR customer service... Never Received a box to Return the receiver and they wont come pick it up.. They Charged me $1, 094.78 to my ATM card with no Sort of Warning!!! For no Reason at all... Now they wont return my Money and it ALL Will be comming back in my account!!! They will get whats comming to them! I DONT RECCOMEND DIRECTV AT ALL!! No Customer Satisfaction What So ever! 10 years Great Service My A**!!!

lies, billing, and more lies
I was told by Directv salesman that my first month's bill would be $52.99, and it was. I was told that for 5 months thereafter it would be $19.99 and for 12 months thereafter it would $29.99. The second bill was for $42.99 so I emailed them and told them of their mistake. We've been battling ever since. I turned them into the BBB and got a response that they would kindly sign me up for $18.99 a month for 12 month rebate (of which I was NEVER told about) and thereafter I would have to pay $52.99 for the remaining 6 months. I declined the offer and intend to turn in their box and also go to the attorney general's office. We all need to fight this injustice so other people are scammed by them.
