There are a myriad of complaints against Discover Enterprises, Inc. on this site, and ALL of them are similar to my experience. I received a marketing call from them. They somehow already had my credit card information. They promised a $200 gas card. Then, they told me of a trial for coupons that would offer savings off of lots of daily purchases. They never mentioned magazines. They only said that if I failed to cancel with in 10 days, I would be under contract with them and would have to pay a "small penalty" for canceling later.
First of all, I never got a gas card. Second, I only received a letter in the mail that said I would be subject to a price adjustment if I didn't cancel in 10 days. Finally, they listed a bunch of magazines I didn't want and said they would be coming in the mail unless I called to change to order. I tried to call three times and was left on hold for more than 15 minutes each time. Obviously, they do this so that you get frustrated and hang up instead of waiting to cancel. Well, I made the mistake of hanging up each time, and forgot about it four a couple weeks. Then, I start seeing $49.96 charges on my credit card. Two months later, I had $100 worth of charges, NO gas card and NO magazines!
So, I finally call and wait for almost 30 minutes on hold to speak to someone. When I do, they say that it's too late. I am locked into a 60-month contract that will cost – get this – $1, 498! I freaked out. They guy then tells me the only way out is to pay a $498 penalty. I ask to speak to a supervisor, etc., and long story short, they were rude, condescending and unrelenting.
So, I paid the $498 and then promptly reported them to the Better Business Bureau. The first response through the BBB from the company was another "too bad" statement, saying that I agreed to all this and they weren't going to refund. Then, I went back on, said I didn't accept their response and mentioned that I found numerous references to Discover Enterprises, Inc. as being a fraudulent company and a "scam."
Well, that did the trick because five days later, I got a response through the BBB that "all monies have been refunded to the account." A couple days after that, and a full credit showed up on my credit card statement. I am not in the process of having that credit card number shut down and a new one established to avoid future scams.
My advice to all of you: If it's not too late: DON'T purchase anything from this company. They are total snakes. If you have already fallen for it as I did, persist with the BBB and your credit card company to have the charges reversed. My representative at Chase said they have had numerous complaints about this company and when the credit card company or the BBB push the issue, they almost always refund the money because they don't want to deal with you.
So don't give up! I didn't, and it was relatively easy to get my money back. If what these people are doing was legal and fair, they wouldn't give in so easily!
