Donation
I recently took their on-line “survey” and consider such a survey a joke as only one question was used. The question concerned about the satisfaction I felt while shopping at your establishment. A survey that includes only one question does not supply you with a large enough population to accurately measure results with any certainty.
While I was checking out, the cashier asked me to donate to the Literacy Fund with some of my loose change. Who are they attempting to con here, I just checked their web-site and there is nothing supported within 25 miles of my community concerning any type of Literacy Program Grant from Dollar General Stores. The stores were founded in 1939 by Cal Turner in Scottsville, Kentucky. Turner was illiterate and later created a Literacy Fund which helps people learn to read; the fund is supposed to donate computers and books to local schools and libraries.
I suggested that instead of asking for more donations from areas that they do not support, that they support the communities that do support the Literacy Fund such as mine. I do not feel that I should support other communities as I keep my purchases within my local community and do not make donations to be used in other areas.
This is apparently a corporate initiative that the we the consumer is supposed to support. Dollar General Corporate does not support all local areas as evidenced by their 2009 Dollar General Literacy Foundation Adult and Family Literacy Grant Recipients report. So the next time I am asked for loose change at the check out process I will lay my purchase down and demand a refund due to their inflexible corporate policies concerning the generosity of their customers. I reminded them not forget the current economy is tight and the donations that they grew to rely on in the past are shrinking, and that they get used to this current economic situation and deal with the economic pressures exerted on everyone.
Dollar General should be grateful that some people actually do donate to this program. I strongly suggested that a sign on the collection container would meet their requirements much better as most do not like to be asked to donate and will leave without leaving anything, but a silent request made by a sign can gather more donations than the cashiers requesting donations from every customer, thereby slowing down the checkout process making other customers dissatisfied with the checkout process. I also suggested that they re-write their corporate policy on this, as the current corporate policy and practice is severely lacking in actual practice by the local manger at the Dollar General.
In closing I expect to see revisions to this policy within the next few weeks or my patronage at the local Dollar General will cease. I really doubt that they really care but who knows maybe this complaint can make a difference.

Consumer threatened
My Mother-in-law ( Faye) and I (Mindy) went to the Dollar General to get a few last items we forgot in our shopping. As we went to check out. Faye was going to pay first. She handed a $100 bill to pay because that is all she had on her. The cashier looked at the dollar bill and just kept looking for a long time and could not look at us in the face and said" This is a fake bill...It does not have a line through it or a face" and Faye ( nicley) said" well it better not be because it is an old dollar"..." she did not even look at the date or dollar again and said that she would have to keep the bill and she can not give it back to her..Faye said "why can 't I have it back"...and she said she will have to call police and it was policy...so we said that we will wait for the police and ask them . Well as she was calling the police she told us "whether you talk to the police or not, you will NOT GET IT BACK". She was so rude and could not look at us. We then found out she was the " Store Manager"... I did not appreciate her mean and threatening words when the police have not come to verify it yet...my mother in law was livid and really upset. When the cop came, he looked at the bill and told the store manager ( name Sherrie) that it is okay because being that the bill is older, m it will not mark with the pens because it is an older dollar...so he said it is our dollar and we could have it back...she was kinda rude to the cop too and I told the cop myself that i understand the policy deal but her attitude did not have to be that way and could of been handled differently. She still after all of that could not even apologize to Faye and she went to the back of the store...talk about customer service..how do people get away with treating customers this way and still have a job??
WE WILL NEVER BE BACK IN THAT STORE AGAIN AND WE WILL TELL ALL OF OUR FRIENDS HOW WE WERE TREATED IN THAT STORE AND EVERYONE ELSE THAT WE SEE!

Mis priced item/refusal to refund
On Wednesday Nov.26, 2008 I purchased several items at Dollar General Store on E Highland Blvd. in Inverness, FL. (Store # 01392) I noticed the price that was marked on the shelf for child cough and runny nose medicine was $2 ea. and I purchased 2 of those items which is all that was left on the shelf at the time. Once I got home with my purchases I decided to check my cash register receipt as I normally do due to finding errors 75% of the time regardless of the retailer. These errors are never in my favor (imagine that) mere coincidence, not a chance as this has been the norm for as long as I can recall, which is years. I noticed that the two items were on my receipt for $2.25 each. Since I live about 6 miles from the store I decided to wait and take the receipt back the next time I was in the area of the store since making a special trip back at the time would cost more in gasoline than the amount I was due as a refund. The next time I was in the area of the store was on Friday Nov. 28, the day after Thanksgiving, only 2 days after my purchase. I showed the error to the girl working there and she even verified the mistake by checking the price tag on the shelf. She told me that since she was not the store manager she would be unable to refund my overcharged amount and questioned why I would wait 2 days to come back to the store. I explained that I didn't notice the error until I was home and I sure wasn't driving 12 miles round trip to get a 50 cent refund since It would take about $2 in gas to make the trip just for a 50 cent refund. She said she could call the manager at home and see what she said and so I ask her to please do that. She made the call and I was standing beside her when she explained the problem to the manager over the phone. When she finished the call she told me that she would be unable to do my refund unless I were to bring the actual items back to the store for scanning. I could not believe such a comment since I had the actual receipt in my hand and the items were scanned at the time of purchase and marked accordingly on the paper receipt. Also I could not believe they would ask me to make yet another trip to the store at a cost far greater than the amount due me. I asked when the manager would be in and if she would write down the store phone number and the manager's name so I could give her a call when she was in, which would be tomorrow (Sat. Nov 29). When I returned home I was furious and I tried to find a way to contact the corporate headquarters to no avail. Granted my overcharge total amount was only 50 cents but that's still my money and I am getting sick and tired of retailers ripping me off for 5o cents here and 50 cents there and I am only 1 person. I can imagine how many people are being ripped off unknowingly simply because they fail to check their cash register receipts. Dollar General needs to hire people with a better attitude and perhaps a little higher IQ as those people are total idiots!

Bad management
I have a complaint about Store # 10452 from 09/04/2008. I went in the store around 6:45pm and I purchased three items. When I went to the counter to purchase my items, there were 12 people in one line and no one was in the store. The manager was missing and 1 girl helped bag the items, which had her name tag on backwards. The cashier didn't have a name tag on and would not open up another line. I was displeased because I had to wait about an half-hour just to reach the front counter to purchase three little items. I hope that the organization and speed of service would be more efficient the next time I visit this store. If problem persists, I will send another complaint to Corporate Office. Thanks for your time in this matter and I hope things get straighten out!
