Dollar Rent A Car Reviews

Poor Everything
My brother, who is in the military was coming home for 2 weeks and due to the time his flight was coming in, noone was available to pick him up when his flight arrived. He was flying in to Albany International in Albany, NY and had made arrangements to rent a car with Dollar Rent a Car.

I spoke with the company on the morning that he was supposed to arrive, because the rental company was not in the actual airport, and I wanted to find out if they had a shuttle service to pick my brother up from the airport so that he could get his rental car. I was told yes, that he would just have to call when he arrived. His flight was delayed 2 1/2 hours, and when he arrived he called me in a panic telling me that he had called Dollar and was told that since his flight was delayed, they dropped his reservation and gave away his rental car and then the agent just hung up on him.

I then called the Dollar rental company to see what could be done to get my brother a car to get home, with him being 1 1/2 hours away from home and had been traveling all day. I was told by the agent on the phone that they only hold the reservations for 2 hours and after that time they gave the car away. He said that my brother should have notified them that his flight was delayed, to which my response was, "how was he supposed to know that you would not hold his car, and how is he expected to call when he is in flight or running through the airport trying to catch his connection?". He responded by telling me that the FAA doesn't allow planes to just fly around in the air for 2 1/2 hours, they would get fined for that, so he had plenty of time to call them and let them know. I asked again if there was anything he could do and he told me that he had no other cars available to rent out, they were out of vehicles. I then asked him if that was how this company does business? You just give away reserved cars and offer no help to people when they are stranded?? He told me that that is how every car rental company in the US does business, they won't hold reservations for over 2 hours. I then asked to speak to a manager to try to get somewhere. He told me that he was the manager, so I then asked him for his name. He told me his name, Scott Havens, and then replied "do you want me to spell it out for you or can you manage it on your own?" I told him, no problem I've got it. He then said "good, call corporate with it! F**c You, and hung up on me.

So I decided to take his advise and after a little good old internet research and a couple of calls, finding out that Thrifty and Dollar are actually managed by the same company, I got in touch with the corporate office in Oklahoma. Just in case anyone needs it, it's 918-669-3930, then pick any number and someone will get you to the right person. The person I actually talked to was the Customer Service Liason to the CEO of the company who advised me to have my brother rent a car from another company and to fax her a copy of the bill personally and she would make sure a check was sent for the difference he would have to pay. She said that that was what the agent SHOULD have told my brother to begin with. We'll see how far this gets as it just happened yesterday 8/9/10.

Daylight robbery
Just to make it clear, we made our car rental reservation through a third party company called Booking Group (known as bookinggroup.com or economybookings.com). When troubles started Dollar blamed everything on the third party company. I'm not buying it…

Dollar robbed us 3 times:

1. According to the voucher we were holding the balance was EUR 127: "€ 127.03 is payable to Dollar on your arrival".

(Approximately $190 at that time)

Dollar charged us $250. After an 11 hours flight it was not easy to argue...what could we do?

Dollar response: "Our records indicate your reservation was booked as $250 in our system for the rental charges, which is what you were charged. Since the Euro amount was quoted to you by the third party company, and they booked the reservation in our system as $250, we must ask you pursue this matter further with the third party."

2. According to the voucher the drop-off location was Manhattan (no fee mentioned):

"Drop-off location: USA New York, Manhattan, Manhattan Downtown"

Dollar charged us with an extra $50, which was a Drop-off fee for returning the car to a different location than the original.

Dollar response: "Since our records indicate this vehicle was reserved with Dollar to return to JFK, we must conclude the third party booked with us incorrectly"

3. Dollar did not explain that the prepaid fuel plan is just an option; we understood that we have to take it.

Dollar response: "It appears you accepted prepaid fuel upon pickup. This was $34.29."

My recommendation: Don't book Dollar Rent-A-Car; Don't do business with Booking Group.

LDW Scam
I was quoted about $400 for a two week rental. After verbally denying insurance 3 or 4 times, I was asked to initial. Lo and behold, they signed me up for insurance. On the contract it was listed as LDW, or loss-damage-waiver; hidden in plain site.

In the end I was charged $340+ for this LDW, which I had declined outright. When trying to work with Dollar for a credit, they refused to budge and refund my money because I initialed the "LDW" option.

Check out my full review here: http://www.alexbr.com/wblog/?p=77

Stay away. Dollar is a bunch of scammers and thieves, no better than your average sidewalk conman. I would even say they are worse because they hide under the guise of a "legitimate" business.

Tricked into extra charges
When I arrived at the Dollar desk to collect the car I was in a hurry as my wife had been taken ill on the plane and I wanted to get away as quickly as possible to get to the hospital. This was already a bad start to our honeymoon.

So you can imagine I was in a real hurry but then had to spend a very long time at the San Francisco Airport desk insisting to the guy that I did not want to upgrade to a convertible, he just kept going on and on about upgrading, and I just kept telling him I did not want to pay a single thing extra than what we had already paid for (through CarHire300) and I refused to upgrade to any additional packages. It was ridiculous, I must have repeated my self 100 times or more - I said very clearly "NO I do not want to pay for anything more than the car rental which is already paid".

He said ok and then passed me the contract across the desk and keeping his hand on the contract at all times, pointed where to sign, which I did, took the keys and left.

I did asked him about petrol and what type the car took, he advised that the car had a full tank already, when I asked how much that would cost he said not to worry about it we would not be charged and to bring it back empty, which I thought was a bit weird, but had no time to query it - now I see why!

He never mentioned anything insurance or road safe and certainly did not inform me to expect any additional charges. I only signed it where he said to, I did not agree to any charges - yet here is what was taken additionally:

$104.85 - Personal Protection Plan.

$89.85 - Optional Supplementary Insurance called Road safe plus (This is a top up insurance that covers for items that are not normally covered in the standard breakdown package)

$27.64 - Conferrecchg (This is tax payable on any extras)

$15.87 - State Tax (This is also tax payable on any extras)

$54.11 - Pre paid fuel

$292.32 - Total Amount

I did not agree to any of these additional extras, we were already on an extremely tight budget for our honeymoon so there's absolutely no way I would have initialed for them.

This is absolutely terrible, I feel totally tricked. Was the guy at the desk on commission!! How could this have happened when I did not agree to those charges!!!

Is this how Dollar gets money by tricking people into signing for something they know nothing about!! I am totally disgusted and do not intend to let this rest until I get a full refund.

Hostile employees
Avoid Dollar Rental Car at Phoenix Skyharbor airport. If you like long lines and employees who are hostile to customers, this is your company. I tried this location several times in February and each time, the employees hid in a back room when customer lines formed, leaving a relatively new employee.

When one of the Dollar employees made a woman customer cry, I wrote a letter to the Dollar corporate office. The letter was answered with a form letter and nonsense discount coupons. If you fly into Phoenix Skyharbor, use one of the other companies, it may cost a little more, but its worth it to avoid the Dollar employees.

Steals money
I rented a van from LAX and verbally declined the additional insurance 3 times. My husband also declined the coverage verbally. When the paperwork was put in front of us I was told to initial beside the D to decline the additional insurance coverage. When I got home I realized I was charged for the coverage. When I complained they said I didn't initial beside the tiny decline, so the charge stands. I thought that initialling beside the D and verbally saying decline 4 times meant decline. You would think when I said the the agent that I did not want the coverage and I initialled stating I did not want the coverage that it meant I did not want the coverage. I am a auto insurance broker and I know I have the coverage on my auto insurance so there is no way I would have accepted the additional coverage. I will not stop until I get my money back. I am so tired of big companies taking advantage of the public. If they rip us all off for $300 each, I know why there is so little money with the common people.

What was supposed to be a weekend getaway turned into a stressful nightmare
I reserved a rental car online for my vacation using my debit/check card, thoroughly reading the terms and conditions before hand and understood the hold that would be placed on my card. When I arrived at Dollar Rent A Car in Las Vegas (from Seattle) I was told that they could not accept my debit/check card because it had already been run through them and denied once earlier that day, even though I had just arrived and had not used my card. After a long wait they finally manually put me into their system since they could not accept me electronically. When I arrived to return the car, on time, I was told that I had not rented a car from them and they could not find me in their system (probably because I was manually entered). After some hassle I was finally given a slip to take to the front counter. On the slip the wrong return time had been written down. They showed the time that it now was, not the time I arrived, making me a half hour late on my rental. When I addressed this at the counter (15 minutes later) I was told not to worry about it and that there would be no additional charges. Because I was manually entered they could not give me an electronic receipt and had to manually make a receipt. They obviously did not know how to do this, as I watched 4 men wander aimlessly around their "office" for 15 minutes trying to find the paperwork to do this, and whisper to each other (obviously in confusion), as I missed check-in time for my flight. I made sure they took my card and ran the charge through to release my funds, per the terms and conditions I agreed to online at reservation. By the time they processed everything and were ready to send me on my way, it was too late to make my flight. When I complained about the amount of time this had just taken, and that I had missed my flight and inquired about when the hold on my funds would be released since they now have the car back, so that I could make arrangements to take the next flight back home, the gentleman was very polite and said that typically the hold is released at midnight, but he would try to expedite the hold for me so that I could make my arrangements and get to work the next morning. When I went to purchase another ticket for my flight out, the funds were still on hold. The funds were still on hold the following day and when I called customer service they explained to me that they could not release the funds. In addition they still showed my account still open and the car not having been returned yet. After explaining to 3 different associates that I no longer was in LasVegas any longer, but calling from my work in Seattle and that I in fact did return the car, payment should have been processed the night before and that I was assured that my funds would be released by midnight at the latest, if not sooner - they finally were able to close my account. I was over charged for the rental for an additional day because of their mistakes, missed a flight and to top it all of, over the next 4 to 5 business days my funds were STILL on hold. My account is now overdrawn because of the many charges I received by these mistakes. What was supposed to be a weekend getaway turned into a stressful nightmare of financial issues due to their mistake of holding my funds for a total of 7 days, instead of 3 as agreed to. I want my money back. And my dignity.

Beware and stay away
I do NOT recommend Dollar Rent A Car, we had a very bad experience with them when we went Wyoming recently for funeral. They basically asked us to drive a car that wasn't safe and when we refused, they sent us a new car, but made us pay the $935 towing fee.

Horrible experience
I reserved a full size car online via expedia a couple of weeks before our vacation and when we arrive our reservation was canceled. THey found us a car and the car given to us broke down 4 days into our vacation of 8 days. They told us at 5:00pm that we would have another car in 3 hours and the other car was delivered at 4:00 am!! THe other car was an Econo line that is used as a shuttle from the airport to the dollar office, and had no seat belts! On top of that we were charged more than double what was quoted on our expedia reservation! Horrible rental car company!!
