I unknowingly got signed up with this company in January 2007, I think after I bought Hydroxatone wrinkle cream (another rip-off story).
I intially received a "welcome" pamphlet from Easy Saver with a membership number, so I immediately went to their website to cancel, as I would NEVER knowingly sign up for a service like this. I even printed out the cancellation confirmation number and shoved it in a drawer thinking it was taken care of. Husband pays the bills, so never noticed that they kept taking the $14.95 every month.
Jump to a year and a half later, I look at the Amex bill and see the charge and call them to find out who they were, as I had no idea. By then I couldn't remember exactly what I had done to cancel, but thought I had, or knew I would NEVER have signed up in the first place.
First I disputed whatever charges I could with Amex, but most of them were too old. Knowing that I would never give them my credit card #, I filed a complaint with the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Office in the state of Maryland (filed online, then sent copies of my cc statements showing the total amount charged) stating that I never requested their service, have never used their service, and never authorized them to charge my credit card.
Encore Marketing was contacted by the Atty General (I was cc'd), and less than a month later, I received a check for the $230 + they owed me.
**Funny, it wasn't until after I sent the letter to the Atty General that I found that printed cancellation (which I had forgotten I even had), and was going to use it if I needed to, but it turned out I got my money back before I had to. I still may send it so the Atty General may want to look into why they kept charging me after they confirmed my account was cancelled.
Either they knew they were in the wrong with me or they are in the wrong so often that they don't want to mess with the Attorney General so they reimburse the ones that take the time to fight back.
I went the Attorney General route with a rebate company before, and it worked then, so now I am 2 for 2. It's a shame it has to go there and we all have to waste so much time, but these companies rely on the fact that people don't have the time and energy to follow up so they don't. For me it was over $200, so it was worth it. Even so, this company is getting rich by soaking lots of people for the $14.95, even if they only get one or two months before people catch on.
