Too bad really. The product appears that it might actually work. The base is a bit flimsy, but is fine unless your cat is 40lbs. Also, the product was delivered in 3 days when the website says 2-6 weeks I think.
The offer is Buy 1 get one with a small shipping charge. But after you add the initial product to your cart, the upsale starts and convincingly implies that your FREE board must still be added to the cart. There is no language that I found while ordering that clarifies and no link to display the content of your current cart. Adding the apparent FREE board seemed to be academic. Then, myself being trusting (now read as sucker) and a website/cart developer, I assumed (very bad and I've learned a lesson) that I'd have a chance to review the order before submitting a confirmation, even after entering CC info. I don't mind all the upsell, that is part of the business. But, after entering the CC info, the order is automatically submitted. So, we ended up ordering 2 boards each with one for FREE with no chance to adjust the cart. We now have 4 boards. The 7.95 S & H turned into $31.95 S & H -- all which is non-refundable. That is standard practice even though is extremely expensive. The faster shipping was ordered without our consent and were charged for it apparently. Standard UPS or USPS would have been no more than half that price and still received within 2 weeks. So the pleasant surprise of quicker shipping is actually a BAD thing. They charged more and got the product out their door before we had a chance to realize the order needed to be adjusted.
The IRS and State Boards of Equalization aren't my favorite orgs, but in most states, if you collect for handling, that is considered income and is subject to tax. This is a shady organization IMO and I truly hope they are looked into by at least each tax authority with prejudice.
Full disclosure: Our call to EmeryCat resulted in a small credit ($10) because we weren't happy. We could have returned the second box, at our cost. But, the second board was only $14.95. Remember the S & H wasn't refundable. Shipping it back for a $15 credit would have cost just about that much. In total, would have cost us just as much before the credit and not have the 2 extra boards, so we kept the boards.
