What a nightmare!
Had the Empire boys come to my home. They did a great job replacing three rooms of carpet. They forgot to bring material to re-carpet the stairs. It wasn't on the order but it was on mine.
After we got that straightened out they re-scheduled another install date and came out to do the job to-day. They came out, ripped up the existing carpet, then realized they did not have enough carpet to do the stairs. The supervisor at site got on the phone while his partner walked around outside. I asked him to please remove the hundreds of staples and ripped up underlay. I was told the next guys will do that and that I should wear shoes when using my stairs.
I found a razor blade left on the stairs and am now looking for some shoes for me, my wife and my 2 - 85 pound Briard dogs!!! What a nightmare!
My wife and I BOTH walked through what we wanted to be measured for the stairs. The guys that came to site had NO FREAKING IDEA what they were supposed to do.
They thought it was a REPAIR job!!!
Oh yeah... I no speak English as well... HELP!

Empire service - rude and lies
We ordered carpet in December 2006. The price was expensive but we took it for the convenience of having it installed that week. The carpeting selected was their “top of the line” Berber. Within two weeks the carpet began to unravel at seams and along walls where it had been cut. When we called the 800 number to complain we were told that the warranty would not cover Berber unraveling but someone would call us back. We called several times and each time was told why the carpet was doing what it was. No one ever acted concerned or promised to fix the problem. At one point we called and asked for customer service and were told that the individual we were talking to was customer service. After we finished explaining our ordeal the individual told us that he would pass it on to customer service. This was just 15 minutes after he told us that he was customer service. About a week later we got a letter from customer service acknowledging our complaint.
Two weeks after our initial complaint a representative came out to inspect the carpeting. The representative for Empire pulled at the carpeting, making it unravel even more. He told us that the carpeting would most likely not be covered because he saw seam sealer in the seams. He told us he had seen this happen when people have parties “and it is the holidays”. He even insinuated that perhaps we had too many people living in the house, we used the stairs too much since it is our only set. He also said our vacuum cleaner was too strong and that our dogs were probably responsible. He took a few pictures in the dark with his cell phone and left.
Needless, to say we were not happy with the manner of customer service or the lack there of. The next day which was a Friday my wife called and was told by Mr. Robert Butler that the carpet was defective and that they would come out Monday and replace it. I called back twice that day to discuss it with Mr. Butler and my calls were not returned. On January 13 we called and requested a copy of our warranty. They don’t give you a copy when installed. You have to call and request it. We still have not received that.
On Monday morning Empire called to reschedule the carpet replacement. I told them that I did not want it replaced at that point. I asked if the carpet had been cut yet and was told no. Shortly afterwards, Jason Fowler from Empire called and said they would be out that day to replace the carpeting. I informed him that I was extremely dissatisfied with Empire and that I wanted the carpet returned.
Rick Burke called me later that day and told me that the replacement carpet had already been cut and that my original carpeting was defective and that the roll had been sent back. I indicated that the carpeting should not have been cut since we had not agreed that the carpet would be replaced or by what style. The carpet that was installed was supposed to be their best Berber and it only last three weeks. I told him I wanted the carpet returned and my money refunded. Since he had already indicated that the carpet was defective and that they had returned it to the manufacturer they should be able to return the carpeting installed in my home. Mr. Burke informed me that the best they could do was refund one fourth of the purchase price or replace the carpeting. I later talked to a Tim Sherwin, VP Eastern Region Customer Service Manager and was told that they still believe we caused the carpet to unravel and that they would not refund the carpet and the best they would do is replace it and give me a 10% credit but I had to move my furniture.
I was later told by the Maryland Attorney General’s office that my situation was a common complaint and their reaction was standard procedure. To provide unprofessional installers and when something goes wrong blame the customer and hope that the customer gives up. We been lied to and treated rudely by everyone at Empire.
I suspect that Empire will response to this posting saying that they have attempted to make good on their poor customer service and their poor product but don’t believe it. They are just liars.

Windows installed crooked
I called Empire Today because of the TV commercials and the fast service. The company might be great but the contractors they hire... well that's another story. They came out on time and as usual I had pictures on my computer of my windows before the job was done, because one picture speaks a thousand words. My old windows were 3 across in a straight line at the front of my house. Also there were no slate tiles missing on my roof around my old windows in the pictures I took of the job before it was done.
The new windows were installed crooked. Each one in 1 to 2 inches higher than the one next to it. I could not believe my eyes so I took a picture of the 3 new windows. Sure enough they appear to be going up hill. They even put the window trim (capping) on crooked. Everything was done from the inside even though the salesman told me that the windows would be put in from the outside. How can you possibly cap a window from the inside leaning out with your head down. It should have been done from the outside so they could make sure the windows and trim were straight. The explanation the installers gave me made no sense at all because I had pictures of my old windows and they were perfectly straight. It seems to me that if the old windows were straight then the new windows should be straight. Some of the trim between the new windows was cut too short and huge globs of caulk was put in the space.
My contract says that all debris would be cleaned up but I have pictures of wood chips and debris all over the roof on top of my eaves. They had a shop vac but no attempt was made to use it to clean up the debris on the 3 side windows. They did vacuum up the debris on the front roof over top of the porch where the 3 front windows were installed crooked.
When they hammered out my old wood windows in the front everything was thrown out the front window and a lot of wood chips and debris was left right at my front door. For $4049.00 cash I got 3 crooked windows and 5 other okay ones. I would not recommend Empire to anyone as far as windows are concerned.

Billed wrong amount
I too, unfortunately, used this company to have laminate wood floors installed. I'm still not sure they installed the same product they showed as their sample, because the floor is a slightly darker color and doesn't have that 'hardwood' feel to it. However, my complaint about this company is that they quoted me $4100 for a large living room area. When I went to a competitor in town and got a cheaper quote, they agreed to lower their price, (not as low as the competitor's, but closer, as they insist they have superior products). Well, I went through the financing where you don't pay for a year. When I got my first bill from the finance company I saw that Empire submitted the first charge of $4100. I have called them 4 times over several weeks, sent letters, done everything to get the correct 'reduced' charge applied as my financed amount, and they have done absolutely nothing but ignore me. They constantly promise someone will call me back, and they never do. Their Illinois home office says the local office has to correct this, but then they say they cant give out the phone number for the local office- that all communication must go through the home office. Also- word to the wise... check the Better Business Bureau website... you'll be stunned at how many complaints Empire Today, LLC has on file. I wish I would have checked before I did business with them. WARNING... DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY. THEY ARE, AT BEST, A SHADY COMPANY.

Do not do business with these ripoffs!
We contacted Empire for an estimate for some hardwood flooring during their 50% off Christmas sale. The sales rep came out, measured, showed us some samples, and said the laminate would be our best choice in a high traffic area, and he had the same stuff in his house. He quoted us 320 square foot for a price of $3900.00, or $12.19 a sq.ft. which included removing and hauling the carpet and some tile. Since the holidays were a couple weeks away, we went ahead with Empire. When I asked the rep about the 50% off deal, he pointed to the more expensive hardwood sample and said "It's 50% of that stuff" and walked out the door!
After several calls to which there was no response, I finally spoke with a Mr. John Tyra who was the sales manager for the So. Cal region. He informed me that the 50% off was for material only, not labor, to which I agreed. However, when he said that the price of the laminate (which in my opinion, is of average to inferior quality) was $260.00 a box and that my price WAS the 50% off, I couldn't believe what I was being told!
I will tell everyone I know NOT TO DO BUSINESS with these ripoffs.

Ruined my house and have been ignoring me for 8 months!
Empire Today installed carpeting in my house and left my house in shambles. I had carpet installed on February 6, 2006 and I have requested that Empire get their carpet out of my house for eight months.
The carpet that was installed had no padding underneath of it, the installers cut all the cable wires in 5 bedrooms of my home, they slashed all the wood baseboards in each bedroom, they ripped wall paper off the walls and they left furniture broken in my home. In addition to all of this in two of the rooms the carpet was not even attached to the floor. They sent out another installer who said it looked like an “abortion.”
After 2 weeks and 4 subcontractors later, my house was still not fixed and the carpet was still horrendous. I have contacted Michelle Ramos and Cynthia Dunlap 8 times to have their product removed from my house. I signed the Notice of Cancellation within 3 business days and they still have not come out and picked up their carpet.
As a matter of fact, they have just sent me a letter telling me that they are going to put a mechanics lien on my house if I do not pay them the money for the carpeting. They are harassing and bullying me when they are the ones who ruined my house and have been ignoring me for 8 months.

Steer clear of Empire Today!
Empire Today just started doing business in NC, and have started a huge t.v. ad campaign. My wife saw the commercials and we figured we'd give them a try. I called and set up an appointment and they sent someone at my earliest convenience. So far so good.
The estimator shows up and immediately put us off by assuming that my wife and I weren't southerners because we didn't have drawls and proceeded to make fun of southern accents.
He immediately started his salesman schmooze by complimenting my wife, playing with the baby, asking to pet our dog, etc etc. He measured the rooms we wanted carpeted and went back to his van to get samples. He immediately started trying to steer us towards the most expensive carpet he had, and told us to not "make the mistake of buying carpet based on price." Um... yeah. Price is not an object to a salesman, is it?
After measuring he gave me an estimate that was about $2000 over what anyone else gave us. He kept going on about how it included EVERYTHING from padding to moving the furniture, to removing the old carpet and padding, etc etc. I was able to talk him down a measly $200 which he immediately tacked back on with sales tax. We really needed the carpet and in a hurry, so I signed on the dotted line. I asked him for an itemized bill so I could see how it all broke down, and he said, "We don't do things that way. We figure it by the job." Red flags then went off...
After he left, I started thinking about how completely wrong I felt about the transaction. I reviewed the paper work and saw where he failed to mention all of my options as far as padding, moving my own furniture, etc etc.
I called and canceled within 30 minutes of him leaving my house. They asked why I wanted to cancel and I told them the salesman wouldn't give me an itemized bill. The customer service rep asked, "Well if we knock something more off the price, would that help?" I told him it might if he could promise me an itemized bill, but he would NOT do that. He gave me my cancellation notice and said that my $25 deposit would be refunded in 10-14 business days. I told him the salesman required $100 from me and he said, "Um... really?"
So then I called to cancel the credit line that was opened with GE and got a call center in India and they refused to help me cancel the account. Why wasn't I smart enough to trust my gut instinct? I'm still in this mess and I will warn EVERYONE to steer clear of Empire Today. Take your money to a reputable local dealer or a national chain of home improvement stores.
