window treatment
The salesaman lied and the company backed him up. I ordered window treatments from a Hunter-Douglas book. I got window treatments from an unkown vender.. The window treatments I got were not of the quality of the Hunter -Douglas product and did not have the Hunter Douglas name on it.. In fact they were a
cheap copy. When I called the company they backed up the salesman lies by stating that I had not ordered a Hunter-Douglas product and quoting from code numbers the salesman had put on the contract... I know what I ordered.. It was from a Hunter -Douglas book of window treatments... The salesman lied and the company lied...

Ripped off
I had done about $50, 000 work of electrical work at an Empire Today store. Among other things we were replacing wire stolen by a previous contractor (which seemed odd but I now understand). Empire Today was a very slow payer because the president held on to the invoices, at least according to the manager. I was doing a low voltage lighting job for the store when I ran out of money. I asked for the money owed me so I could finish the job. The manager went through the roof and demanded I finish in two weeks. I couldn't since I had no money for materials. He then demanded an accounting of all materials and labor. He had never asked for this before, my foreman had moved to Denver taking the paper work with him and lost it in the move. I couldn't reconstruct the material list. I finally hired an attorney who couldn't get past the smokescreen of lies the manager put up. I never got paid and was baffled by this personality change until a psychiatrist friend of mine told me the manager's behavior was classic sociopath. She predicted all future moves he would make.

MISLEADING
I CALLED EMPIRE TO HAVE A REP COME TO THE HOME FOR A FREE QUOTE FOR CARPETING FOR 3 ROOMS. THEY SCHEDULED A REP TO COME OUT THE SAME DAY. WHEN SHE ARRIVED AT OUR HOME, SHE WAS IN PLAIN CLOTHES WHICH WAS FINE BUT SHE HAD NO IDENTIFICATION OR BADGE STATING THAT SHE WAS WITH EMPIRE. I FOUND THIS ODD BUT AGAIN, REALLY NOT AN ISSUE. SHE WENT ON ABOUT EMPIRE HOW THEY HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR X AMOUNT OF YEARS, THEY HAVE AN A+ RATING WITH THE BBB AND HOW "THEIR INSTALLERS" ARE BACK GROUND CHECKED TO THE AGE OF "16", THEY HAVE TO PURCHASE A $1500 PIECE OF EQUIPMENT IN ORDER TO "WORK FOR EMPIRE", ETC... THIS LEAD US TO BELIEVE THAT THE INSTALLERS WERE ACTUALLY EMPLOYEES OF EMPIRE. AFTER THE INITIAL SHOCK OF THE QUOTE FOR 3 SOMEWHAT SMALL ROOMS, MY HUSBAND QUESTIONED THE PRICE. SHE ASKED HIM IN SOMEWHAT OF A RUDE MANNER "WELL HOW MUCH DID YOU THINK IT WAS GOING TO BE"? NEEDLESS TO SAY, YOU COULD CUT THE AIR WITH A KNIFE. MY HUSBAND GAVE HER A # WHICH WAS APPROXIMATELY $700 LESS THAN HER QUOTE. SHE HESITATED AND TOLD HIM THAT SHE WOULD CALL A "MANAGER" TO SEE IF THEY WOULD APPROVE THAT AMOUNT BUT SHE WAS DOUBTFUL. LOW AND BEHOLD THE "MANAGER" APPROVED THE "ADJUSTED PRICE". HER ATTITUDE WAS STILL OF DISBELIEF ALMOST MAKING US FEEL LIKE WE WERE CHEAP BY SAYING "WE LIKE TO HELP OUT PEOPLE". WHAT THE HELL KIND OF COMMENT IS THAT? WE ARE HELPING HER OUT BY GIVING HER THE SALE! WE SCHEDULED THE INSTALL FOR 2 DAYS OUT. I RECEIVED A CALL FROM THE "INSTALLERS" AT APPROXIMATELY 7:45 AM TELLING ME THAT THEY WOULD BE THERE AT 8:30 AM. THEY KNOCKED ON OUR DOOR AT 8:10 AM. WHEN I OPENED THE DOOR I WAS EXPECTING TO SEE MEN IN UNIFORMS "LIKE THE COMMERCIAL ADVERTISES" AND LIKE A BUSINESS WITH AN "A+ BBB RATING" SHOULD BE DRESSED IN A PROFESSIONAL MANNER, BUT INSTEAD THERE WERE 2 MEN STANDING AT MY DOOR IN "STREET CLOTHES" AND AGAIN WITH NO TYPE OF INDENTIFICATION BADGE REPRESENTING EMPIRE. I LOOKED OUTSIDE AND THE VAN THEY PULLED UP IN WAS A CHEESY OLD WHITE CHEVY FROM THE 80'S AND AGAIN TO MY SURPRISE "NO LOGO IDENTIFYING THEM AS EMPLOYEES OF EMPIRE"! I WAS TAKEN BACK A BIT. THEY CAME IN TO OUR HOME AND LOOKED AROUND AND THEN 1 OF THE GUYS ASKED TO USE OUR BATHROOM. REALLY? WELL MAYBE IF THEY WOULD HAVE ARRIVED AT 8:30 AM WHEN THEY SAID THEY WOULD BE THERE HE WOULD HAVE HAD TIME TO "TAKE CARE OF HIS BUSINESS"! NOT EVEN 10 MINUTES LATER, HIS PARTNER ASKED IF HE COULD USE THE BATHROOM! AT THIS POINT I WAS GETTING AGGRIVATED. WHEN THEY WERE DONE TAKING CARE OF "THEIR BUSINESS", THEY FINALLY GOT AROUND TO MOVING OUR FURNITURE OUT TO OUR BACK YARD AND GARAGE. I WAS TOLD BY THE SALES REP THAT THEY WOULD ASK ME TO LOOK AT THE CARPET TO VERIFY THAT IT WAS CORRECT. I HAD TO ASK TO LOOK AT IT AS IT WAS NOT EVER BROUGHT UP BY THEM. IT WAS CORRECT. I HAD LEFT THE CREDIT CARD ON OUR COUNTER AND AFTER HAVING TO MOVE MY CAR FOR THEM, I CAME BACK INTO OUR HOME TO FIND HIM ON HIS CELL PHONE WITH OUR CARD IN HAND GIVING THE # TO WHO WAS HOPEFULLY AN "EMPIRE EMPLOYEE". HE WROTE DOWN AN AUTHORIZATION # AND TOOK A HARD COPY OF THE CARD. THEY STARTED THE WORK AND COMPLETED WITHIN 5 HOURS. THE ONLY REAL POSITIVE THING I HAVE TO SAY IS THAT THEY WORKED THE ENTIRE TIME THEY WERE THERE. I GUESS MY BIGGEST BEEF WITH THIS COMPANY IS THAT THEY ARE OVER PRICED BUT ARE WILLING TO "CALL A MANAGER" TO NEGOTIATE THAT PRICE, THEY DO NOT REPRESENT EMPIRE IN A PROFESSIONAL MANNER AND MOST IMPORTANTLY THEY CONTRACT THE LABOR FROM DIFFERENT COMPANIES SO THEY ARE NOT "EMPIRE EMPLOYEES" AND WHO KNOWS WHAT TYPE OF PEOPLE WERE IN OUR HOME THE OTHER DAY?

Poor Service
In the beginning of November, I don’t exactly remember the date; I had an estimate done on carpet and tile and made a deposit of $200.00. However, I thought the estimate was too high, so I called customer service to voice my concern. During that conversation I found that there was a special promotion. I responded to the customer service representative the sales representative did not share that information with me. I expressed to the customer service rep, that the sales person who came out to my house did not offer me any details on a promotion. As a matter of fact, he simply said to me just tell me what you want, even though I inquired about the prices. The customer service rep apologized for the misinterpretation and assured me that a manager would give me a call back. Conversely, the same sale rep who came out to my house called me back with the same spill. At this point, I had become a bit frustrated. I relayed to the sales rep I wanted to speak with a manager. Sometime thereafter, the manager did give me a call back. Unfortunately, I was not available due to my work schedule. Moving on, I returned the manger's call at least twice that I know of. By the time the manger returned my call several different arrangements had been made that I was not aware of. To say the least, it has been a whirlwind of an experience. After dealing with several different reps general managers and presidents, I was finally able to talk with the general manager and I felt he really did not want to work with me. One of the first things he said to me was, “You cancelled your order.” My reply was, “I did not.” He continues your check was returned to you on November 30th, to me this response was rude. As of today's date, I still have not received the returned check. Also, I asked about the current promotion and he replied that offered would not apply to my order. His attitude was very condescending, it was like pulling teeth, and he wanted me to just cancel the order. He asks, “What would make you happy?” I replied. He stated that would not happen and offered $400.00 off. Hence, I did not feel like he did this in good faith he was forced to make the offer, moreover, I felt that I should have qualified for the current promotion which was 60% off. To make a long story short, I choose Empire for two reasons, good recommendations and convenience. As you can see it has been anything but convenient, although, I must say, your customer service reps have been absolutely a pleasure. Please contact me at your earliest convenience, my work cell number is (609) 402-6629.

Thanks in advance for your prompt attention to this matter.

Won't Honor Warranty
I thought I had done my homework, We had wanted floors put in so we had a few estimates done from staining the cement floors to flooring wood and laminateand even tile. We ended up going with Empire Today laminate flooring. The salemen came in with samples and we asked all of the questions about the floor, about warranty, cleaning of the floors, is the floor scratch resistant and even moisture. He had stated that we use a lamiate floor cleaner and wet towels even some goo-off stuff and other things like that that there would be no problem. That because of there superior moisture resistant coating, there would be no problem. About 8-9 months into having the floors put in I noticed problems, but at the time I was having to take my husband back and forth to doctors and hospitals, so, the flooring wasn't on the top of my list to take care of. Until now and now Empire Today won't honor there 15 year warranty. And after about $10, 000 later we were told that it was our fault we must be flooding our livingroom, or diningroom and our hallwall. The so called independent inspector told Empire Today, that there was to much moisture in the floor and the only conclusion was I wasn't taking care of my floors the proper way and that there must of been a water leak or flooding in the home for that much moisture. I told them they were crazy, my home was in a flood in 97 and I don't even use laminate cleaners I was hoping to avoid this type of issue and look where I am now. But, they stated that after a small fee they would replace the floor. But, if we had not flooded our floor they would replace. So, anyone thinking of using "Empire Today" Stay Away or you will end up like us. If I could help someone avoid this frustration I will. I am going to post this about Empire Today every where I can. I have even called Channel 3 in my area, to see if they can help me in anyway, and also the BBB better business

Rip off
Well a friend of mine had used Empire Today and he recommended them to me. I called and scheduled and appointment for 3-5 pm. Well on that day I didn't get a call until 6:30 pm from the guy that was supposed to come that day. He told me he was sick and couldn't make it and I needed to reschedule. This should have turned me off and I wish I never had them come here but I did anyway. So I made an appointment for 2 days later. The woman shows up and measures the room and is very shady about the whole process. She didn't tell me how much the carpet we picked out cost per square foot and just told me it's going to cost $1275 for a bedroom!! I was shocked but figured that I was getting carpet from a trustworthy company and it would be good quality. She took a deposit of $250 and quickly left. After looking over the paper work and realizing that it was a rip off I knew that I should have paid more attention and asked more questions. When I did the math I was paying $50 per square foot! This was my first time buying carpet and owning a home so I was not educated on this subject. I quickly called her and she was shocked that I called back so fast and started saying how she could check the local warehouses and see if she could get me a lower price. Well a thought that she would do this from the start and that they should be giving me the best price. She got mad that I kept telling her to cancel everything so she hung up the phone. I went online and stopped payment on the check which cost me$30 but it's better than losing $250. I received a phone call from her several hours later and told me I could have the carpet done of $500. That is less than half the price I was originally quoted so why could she go so low now? I didn't really care how low she could go at this point because I didn't trust her anymore. Once again I said no and she hung up the phone. I would never recommend anyone to use Empire Today. I went to Lowes the same day and got Stainmaster carpet with good padding for about $37 a square foot. And at least I knew what I was getting there and everything was explained to me in a professional manner.

Price discrepancy, binding arbitration clause
Empire Today, Misleading Price, Rude Salesman and a BINDING ARBITRATION clause

Summary: recommendation is to buy elsewhere

Empire Direct Salesman visited and was on several occasions rude, making jokes at my expense. Contrary to my better judgement, my wife liked the carpet, so we agreed price and I left my wife to take care of paperwork.

Upon reviewing the contract that evening, there was an unexpected $200 dollar difference in price agreed, furthermore buried in the terms and conditions a "binding arbitration" clause.

Out of principle, I cancelled the order next day and prior to writing my experience of Empire on this site, I gave their VP an opportunity to remedy the situation by removing the binding arbitration clause and honoring the original agree price.

After speaking with a different local sales representative, I was expecting to hear back but never received a call back despite leaving messages. It took another email to a sales director to get a reply.

What does this mean? In the event of a dispute your ONLY option is binding arbitration with Empire Today. Please "google" the term on Wiki - Binding arbitration was intended for internal commerce NOT to restrict consumer options in the event of a dispute.

The lack of response from the local office is indicative of what you can expect dealing with Empire. Head office has higher expectations which are simply not met by the Atlanta local office.

I consider myself to have had a lucky ESCAPE, clearly if the company was confident in its products, it would have no problem removing the binding arbitration clause.

Unbelievable...
Had carpet installed in the basement since we had used Empire previously. They installed the carpet in a timely fashion and it looked great. When it rained the problems started. The basement had a wet spot at the door where the carpet meets the door. The reason: when Empire installed the carpet, they took out the threshold/kickplate, laid the carpet where the threshold would be, and then placed the threshold back in its place without securing it back correctly. The kickplate was angled upward and when it rains, the water seeps into the bottom of the door. A contractor came out to replace my door because the bottoms of the wooden doorbuck have water damage. He said whoever installed this kickplate did not secure it correctly and did not reseal it. The "whoever" is Empire Today's installers. So I gave Empire Today a call and they listened to my story and the installation guy said "If there is a kickplate there, ..." when I had just explained the kickplate issue. This tells me that he is telling me that I am lying. I mean why would I lie about a kickplate. That got me livid and they wouldn't even send someone out to even look at the situation. His next response was: If I want something done, I will have to pay for any installation and special order of carpeting. So basically, he wants me to PAY for their faulty and negligent installation. Their customer service is terrible. In addition, I called them about this on a Wednesday morning and received a reference number. They didn't return my call until the following Tuesday afternoon!

Ripoff Pricing
I had been living in NY and owned several rental properties, so I had purchased carpeting many times, but when I moved to Virginia and built a home for myself, I didn't know any local Carpet companies so I figured I would give Empire a try, having seen thier ads many times. Since I had built the house Iknew the size of the rooms and how much carpet it would take, including waste...but of course they have to measure for themsleves, and whenhe did, the saleman came up with 10 more yd than I had figured..Itold him of the discrepency, and asked how he arrived at that number.. and he showed me his "layout", which was the same as mine, and then said they always automatically add 20% for "waste". .LOL i laughed and told him to get out.He siad, wait, he might be abl to better on the price, and I said no thanks...if youare going to try to rip me off tostart with, I don;t want to even get involved with doing business with you..so really ..GET OUT...and found a reputable local company whose price for the carpet was actually a dollar or 2 more per sq yd, but on 20% less carpet, so still alot cheaper.

ps there shold nev rbe an "automatic" amount added for waste.. the wast es what it is..ie..if you have a 9x11 room..which is 11 sq yds, you will need to by, and pay for a 9 x 1 2 ( 12 sq yds) piece of carpet ecasu eit come sin 12' with, and a 9'x1' pice(1 sq yd) will be left over (waste)..butthat is less than 10% which is more typical

Liars Credit Damage Extortion Shoddy Product
From the horrible rude sales guys to the credit damage I'm STILL contending with, Empire Today has been a nightmare; start to finish! The flooring is shoddy. The installation took two tries. Empire, later could not match the flooring... "we're all out of that color." They were paid IN FULL and ON TIME, but still collaborated with their finance company, G E Money Bank to extort an additional $680 from me. It took a three way phone call with my lawyer, myself and some customer service -sshole in India to get G E Money Bank to admit that they were NOT owed the $680. But, the amount is still showing up on my credit report. And, adding insult to injury, Empire Today is reporting to credit agencies that the full amount for the flooring and installation is unpaid, even though I have their cashed check in hand from my bank!! What a horrible experience. I'd like to rip out every square inch of their lousy laminate and ship it to their stupid Credit Manager. I may still do just THAT!!
