Empire has the worst customer service September 17, 2009
Damage to tenants below
I had Empire Today install laminate flooring and carpets which they did and it came out nice. The problem is the sales guy who came I think was drunk and measured wrong, I did smell alcohol on his breath when he was doing the measurements. Turns out he measured wrong and they didn't bring the correct amount of materials. so the job took two days.

Thats not what im complaining about though, when they were banging in the floors the tenant below me had a piece of speckle from a nail head fall into her babies crib. Then there was a hair line fracture in the ceiling, small crap at the least nothing major. I called the salesman to let him know and see if he could get someone here to throw some Spackle, of course i got no response. I called the 800 number and explained the situation and they said they are not liable, and the first rep flat out hung up on me. I wasn't even being rude at all. I called back immediately NOW FUMING and demanding a manager. Manager gets on and I explain the situation and she said they will take care of it. You figure you have to pay these bastards in cash they would do the right thing, Im not asking them to replace the entire ceiling for these people, literally a 15 minute Spackle job.

I get a call today from some extremely rude woman from the corporate offices that wouldnt let me finish my sentences and I litterally had to stop her in her tracks and say "HEY I AM THE CUSTOMER LET ME TALK"
She also said they don't send anyone to fix repairs like this so now I have to find a outside contractor and pay out of my own pocket then fax this rude lady the bill and hope i get reimbursed. Awful customer service, save yourself the trouble and get a private contractor for your floors or carpet that has a good name in your area.

fraud, low end products, dishonest
We purchased Easy Living Laminate flooring and carpet from Empire back in February 2009. The price we agreed to at the time the sales person was here did seem high but we were told we would be getting a 30 Year TRANSFERABLE warranty on the flooring. After the supposed to be Empire employees; they were subcontractors, installed and left I realized they never gave the warranty papers. There was a number to call on one of the brochures the sales person gave me to get warranty info. So I called them right away and was told it would be in the mail. Weeks went by and no warranty papers. I made several of these calls and then made a complaint to the BBB. I was finally told by Empire that the warranty was being CHANGED and I would receive one when it was done. About a month went by, I called again and again was told they would mail it. Just last week (9/2009) I noticed what looks like a chip and peeling area in the floor and a couple of other areas that don't look quite right. So I called to get someone to replace the planks. While on the phone I ask again about my warranty...she said it would be mailed. She also gave me an appointment to have the floor planks replaced. No one showed up, called rescheduled and again no one showed up...they called me this time and scheduled again and never showed up! I did get the warranty paper in the mail. Yes, indeed they did change it. It states that it is not TRANSFERABLE and that nothing the sales persons tells you is true basically. Now I am in the process of taking legal action. Hopefully this company will be held accountable for their actions.

FRAUD
I am totally disgusted with Empire Today. My husband and I decided to shop around before we bought carpet. First we had Mercer Carpet from Hamilton NJ come in and give us a wonderful estimate. As the salesman from Mercer Carpet came walking through the door the Empire salesman "Paul Sherlock" came walking through our door; knowing as he arrived that we were doing our homework. After giving us the sales pitch for a while he told us how we could get these wonderful discounts...etc. Needless to say he said they could beat the competitor's pricing. He also said Mercer Carpet wasn't quoting us for the correct amount of sq. yards. Of course Empires being much more than then competitors. Not only was Empire able to "match" but they were able to "beat" the competitor's price by $100.00. Everything sounded good...Until we started writing out the contract...

The salesman "Paul Sherlock, from Empire" said that because of the low cost he proposed, he now would be charged a kick back. So if we could write a check out to him for $275.00 we would then be charged the balance the day the carpet was installed. My husband and I actually thought that he was a contractor for Empire, when in fact he is actually an employee for Empire. So we didnt think too much of it. We then looked at our contract for Empire and it made no mention of our $275.00 check. I checked with our bank and this gentleman indeed signed the check and had it deposited into his direct account.

After making Empire aware that they have a salesman who is ripping them off and the customer off, we were told they did a thorough investigation and despite the cancelled check(showing the deposit), the contract from Empire (w/out the deposit included) and our credit card receipt(showing full payment), Empire doesnt seem to think that there is a problem and plans on doing nothing about it. I will get my $275.00 back!

Terrible experience
I called for an appointment and the woman who came out spent more time telling me about her failing marriage and texting the man she might cheat on her husband with than telling me about the product. I should have taken the hint there, but I wanted carpet and so I signed up only to think later about how I had to ask her about discounts (which she would not have offered if I didn't ask). I looked on the cancellation form for the protocol to cancel the order and followed the instructions. A week later they called to confirm install. I said I had cancelled and the rude woman put me through to the cancellation department. I waited 10 minutes before I hung up to save cell phone minutes. I would call the next day to make sure I would get my deposit back that they cashed even though I had cancelled. When I finally spoke to the cancellation department (after waiting and waiting... I can only assume they have to deal with A LOT of cancellations) and he said, "If price is your problem than I'll take it down a few hundred dollars." To that I replied that the project should have been priced fairly to begin with and that it is unethical to offer a discount only after I tried to cancel.

So he put me on hold and after a few minuted came back with a confirmation number. Think the story ends? NOPE!! The installer called the next day to let me know he'd be at my house in an hour. I apologized that no one had informed him of my cancellation to which he replied, "It happens all of the time." I wonder if I'll ever get my money back.

laminate flooring
I had laminate flooring installed by Empire Today. I was happy with the installation which was done quickly and all my furniture was moved and then put back. Shortly after the installation, I noticed some puckers along 2 of the seams. I called and someone came out and checked it and made an appointment to repair it the following week. They never showed up. I sat waiting for 3 1/2 hours. I finally called and they claimed they had no record of the appointment. After much run around and not the nicest treatment, they made me another appointment and told me I would have to pay over $300. This was never told to me by the representative who came to check the repair needed. They proceeded to tell me it was in the contract that I would have to pay. I am completely unhappy with this company and warn otheres to be cautious and ask a lot of questions. Also get names and numbers in case they decide not to show up for scheduled appointments. I will not use them again or recommend them to my friends.

Sleazy Sales Tactics
I called Empire Today and had a sales representative come for a free carpet installation estimate. He was an extremely fast talker and fit the stereotypical salesman persona:fast talking, fairly slick, etc. He quickly began showing me samples, and made an obvious push toward the more expensive carpet, and nonchalantly dismissed the "inferior" products. After measuring, he gave me an initial quote of $4, 300 for everything. I balked at his offer, as the space was an unfurnished 950 square foot space upstairs. After making some fake phone calls to his "manager, " he gave me another price for $2, 200! Are you kidding me! How can there be such a huge price disparity?! I soon realized this salesman was playing games and I did not want any part of it. I asked him for an itemized breakdown of their cost and labor charges, and he said "we don't do our billing that way, " which seemed extremely odd. He then tried to pressure me by telling me it costs his company $500 to come to my house and that he will not come back; nor can I keep his estimate and call him back once I feel more comfortable. His take it or leave it stance seemed very unprofessional. I ended up going with a small Mom & Pop Carpet Store near my house, which offered me better carpet, thicker padding, and most importantly, a better price. Don't call Empire Today!

No warranty honor
In April, 2008, we invited Empire Today to our house to discuss flooring options. We were considering either hardwood or laminate and after our discussions with the Empire representative, we purchased laminate flooring. During this initial consultation, the sales representative told us that the flooring we were purchasing, Quick-Step flooring by Unilin, was water and scratch resistant.

He told us that water could sit on the floor for up to three days before it suffered any damage and that, because of its superior water resistance, it was the flooring that Empire recommended for kitchens and bathrooms.

To clean the floor, the sales person recommended Windex or a laminate cleaner. For sticky spills, he said we could moisten a rag with water and wipe the spill. For tough spills, he recommended Goof-Off.

We agreed to have our entire first floor covered in the Quick-Step product. The cost of the flooring was almost $9000.00!

Installation went smoothly.

We cleaned the floor as recommended by the sales representative, including the use of a moist towel to spot-clean. Regardless of how we cleaned, be it laminate cleaner or Goof-Off or moist towel, we made sure to dry the area thoroughly. At no time did we ever mop the floor with a floor mop or saturate it with laminate cleaner (or water).

Within one month, the flooring in the kitchen began to bubble around the edges of the planks and, after several telephone calls, Empire Today sent a flooring inspector to inspect the floor. The flooring inspector noted that the bubbling was sit-related due to water damage, but gave no explanation as to what he meant by that.

Because the product is in the kitchen, water spills occur frequently during routine use. We wash dishes, prepare food, wash hands after dinner, etc. However, we towel-dry the floor after each spill.

Empire Today has refused to honor our warranty, claiming that the manufacturer will not honor a claim of damage caused by water.

According to the Quick-Step warranty, the product ...will resist water damage. The warranty then states that it WILL NOT cover damage if the product has been ...put to abnormal use or conditions or abused in any way.

The warranty describes abnormal use to include ...water damage from plumbing, storm or flood, damage from smoke, fire or other casualty events; damage caused by negligence... And describes abuse as ...any use of the flooring that is unreasonable considering the normal and expected uses of a laminate floor in a residential environment.

Since the floor was installed in the kitchen, at the recommendation of Empire Today, it is not unreasonable to expect that it would withstand water spills, provided the spills are cleaned up afterward.

The general Manager at Empire Today (Durham, NC) does not seem to think so. He has made it clear that, despite what the sales representative told us, it was our responsibility to verify the accuracy of Empire's claims. So it is our fault that we are stuck with a damaged floor that soaks up water on contact.

Carpet Installation
Horrid company. They're extremely low bid should've raised a red flag for me, alas, I was baited and they switched.

Customer service is atrocious. They can commit only to a 10-hour window for installation. The poor installer subcontracting to them didn't receive any instructions, only the material. And the material they received wasn't what we ordered.

What they're good for? Quick, cheap, shoddy material that if you don't care how it's going to look, will be installed sometime within the 10 hours you're waiting at house.

If you're looking for a decent product represented by a respectable company, then go local. Empire Today appears to have the same corporate infrastructure as the bygone Communist Party of the old USSR.

Poor Quality in Carpets and Service
I hired Empire Today for carpet installation. Stay away from these crooks! They came and would not install until I paid them in full even after the salesman told me I would pay upon completion. When they came they were short on carpet and had to return the next day, this time it was a different crew and they left a large visible seam in the middle of the floor. They also broke furniture! After about 3 months of the carpet being installed, I noticed that the carpet was wearing quickly, I called Empire and they told me they would have someone come out to look at it, when the man came out, he insulted me by saying my vacuum was no good and I don't vacuum enough, when I told him that I vacuum 3 times a week he said I need to vacuum everyday. I was so upset by hearing this and I contacted Empire again, this time they ingored me. At this point, I reported them to the BBB, this is when I finally heard from them. They had a third party inspector come out and a week later I received a report in the mail saying the carpet was not defective and it was my fault it looked the way it did beause my vacuum doesn't pick up the fibers enough. Too bad they don't have a section on the report that states the carpets they sell are inferior and junk! Stay away from these crooks, they are very dishonest and are not in business for the customer, if you get their flooring, you will need to spend more money to replace it in the near future.
