Ethan Allen Reviews

No customer service
Ironically, as a marketing and public relations professional I understand that occasionally mistakes are made. But to fess up and make right usually says something for the company and the issue. To date, I have attempted to fix issues with a September furniture order my newlywed husband and I placed with no resolution.

I have called and emailed corporate. The customer relations representatives that I was assured would return my call promptly never have. Instead I got an email weeks later - after again reaching out - from someone else who seems to have no ability to resolve anything. Rather I am advised in a email "that the local store" has the ability to discern things about delivery, fees, etc. Yes isn't it ironic that the local designer who sold me the items hasn't been heard from once since I placed the order? And instead I'm tracking down people at the local store who are also non-communicative? I placed another email to them last week - it's been four days and nothing. Not one word.

Thankfully, my husband and I received a few of the non-upholstered items and we will keep those. But we have decided that the other items are no longer of importance to us. I will never buy from Ethan Allen again and I have told - and will continue to tell everyone who visits my home - about the horrors of working with the company. I am contemplating calling my credit card company and advising them due to the poor customer service and the failure by Ethan Allen to deliver a product promised.

I anxiously await to see if Paula Mandeville will finally, after 8 weeks respond to me or if the corporate folks I spoke to will call me back. But I do plan to use the power of the pen and the Internet to share my dissatisfaction and tell everyone who will listen that Ethan Allen is not a company that I would recommend doing business with.

It's disheartening to read all these issues. I loved my designer but I hate what she did and I know hate the company. Reputation is built on more than price of a "Supposed superior" product. It's built on responsiveness, reaction and responsibility.

Horrible Purchase Experience and Customer Service
I'm in the middle of a horrible purhcase experience with Ethan Allen -- complete bait and switch. They quoted me a price for a sofa, and we agreed to the price and ordered it. A week later the contract came in the mail-- it was for $600 more (excluding tax) than we agreed to.

After, multiple phone calls, the sales person is feigning completed memory loss re: the price we purchased it for! She agrees that she quoted us the wrong fabric grade, but does not have any recollection of the figures I have written in my catelogue. How a woman who has 20 years experience in the business could (a) provide me a quote with the wrong grade of fabric, and (b) not have any notes of the quote she presented us, is beyond comprehension. Further, when we called back to process the purchase, the store confirmed the quoted price. No mention at that point that it was a misquote. The proclaimed "errors" in this purchase process are so remarkable, they cannot possibly be unintentional errors.

Unfair trade practices aside, this is simply an infuriating waste of time. We shouldn't have to have multiple phone calls with the retailer to argue, negotiate and fight about what we agreed to. This isn't a fly by night used car dealership. We were quoted and accepted a price. A week later, a contract comes in the mail, reflecting a different, siginificantly higher price.

This is NOT the customer service we expected from Ethan Allen. We specifically purchased from them because we thought it would be hassle free and we'd get a quality product. Now I've spent multiple phone calls with the store and still haven't gotten anywhere. Their behavior and response have been simply shocking.

The kicker in all of this is: we ordered the FLOOR MODEL. Same configuration. Same fabric. When a customer asks: how much is that exact model?, it should be a simple process for the sales person to give you an accurate figure. UNACCEPTABLE.

No customer service
I agree Ethan Allen has NO customer service. the Pmandeville email address comes back as undeliverable. What a joke!! I have spent a great deal of time trying to get a simple question answered... when will the furniture i ordered 3 months ago be delivered? Like other reviewers i would like to be able to shop at this store, but with this long legacy of atrocious if not comical customer service, i am not so sure that will be possible. WSJ newspaper is reporting today that the company is being downgraded because of poor performance. This is not surprising news.

Poor quality
I had purchased Ethan Allen bedroom and living room furniture in the early 1990s and was very pleased with the quality of the casegoods and upholstry.

In 2008 I decided to purchase new family room furniture and visited my local Ethan Allen store. The sales person was very friendly until I did not go with her suggestions. I ended up purchasing several chairs, a new sofa and a few casegoods to the tune of $6000, which evidently was not a huge purchase in her eyes. The sofa is falling apart after 1 year, the fabric is substandard as is the overall quality. I never had any follow up from my sales person and she is always too busy with clients and not interested in assisting with small purchases of "accessories."

Sales associate attitude
This afternoon my husband and I were shopping to furnish our new 1700square foot home. We were in the Setauket store on Long Island and spoke with a sales associate named Kathy. She asked us what we were looking for and we indicated a sectional for our den. She mentioned that the only sectional they had in the store was the one we just looked at. We indicated that we would be interested in looking at other sofa and love seat set ups. She immediately asked what our budget was. We said approximately $3000. She told us that $3000 would not be enough and looked at us uncomfortably. We proceeded to leave. I have never felt so bad about myself in my whole life. My husband and I are two young professionals, purchasing our first home. What I am suggesting is that their sales associates not judge a book by its cover. We were willing to stretch our budget in order to purchase a quality product and an open minded sales associate would have showed us the merchandise and let us decide what we could or could not afford. I would assume that Ethan Allen would like to attract new business, but they will not do that by alienating younger generations. Mark my words, I will never step foot in another Ethan Allen as long as I live after the way the associate Kathy made me feel today.

Poor Quality and terrible customer service
I purchased a pedestal dining room table and an end table from Ethan Allen about three years ago. The dining table has completely lost all of its varnish and looks worn, and the end table's stain is starting to chip away. Ethan Allen has refused to fix the merchandise and is claiming that it is normal wear and tear. I am appalled by their lack of loyalty to their customers. I will never set foot in another Ethan Allen store again. I would certainly recommend shopping elsewhere for anything you need for your house since their quality has not withstood even three years of normal use!

Poor Workmanship/Poor Customer Service
Purchased a leather couch and loveseat from Ethan Allen in 2007. After the first year the frame of the couch broke and they came out and replaced it. The new couch now has a pillow that is not made well and doesn't fit on the couch properly. I called their customer service and two gentlemen came out and looked at the pillow. They agreed and said this is not a problem at all, and we will have Ethan Allen replace the pillow. Two weeks later I get a call from customer service...they won't replace the pillow cause now the couch is out of warranty. I argued with the lady and got absolutely nowhere. I spent around $8000 on these couches and the workmanship is horrible and shame on Ethan Allen for their poor customer service. I will NEVER SHOP THERE AGAIN! Out of warranty it a pillow for christsakes!

Kept me waiting 4 months for a bench
ETHAN ALLEN! DON'T BUY THERE! Ordered two chairs, end table, and bench, custom covered, in November 2008. Told 6 weeks turn around maybe 8. Chairs and end table came in, no bench. Told 1week, it was in California; next week it was on East Coast, next week Minneapolis, MN--a travelling bench--after 4 MONTHS still no bench. Finally arrived, told them to keep it. Store will NOT refund deposit, won't do a thing Oh, to boot they had a very condescending attitude. The hard times must not affect Ethan Allen because they sure don't mind driving away customers.

table top
In July 2008, I purchased a dining table to be used in my newly remodeled kitchen. Furniture took 3 months to be delivered. (toast/cotton) were the color stains of the wood. In addition, 4 cushioned dining chairs were coordinated. After one week of using the table with a cloth and mats, the matte table top finish began to wear down and form shiney spots which looked like grease spots from afar. It gave the appearance of a dirty, greasy table. A repairman came out to "take pictures". Ethan Allen responded by saying that this is normal wear and tear. Hah!!. One week later and this is NORMAL. They refuse to do anything else, however, they do recommend that I have a Guardsman re-finish, at my own expense. I will NEVER purchase from them again. In today's economy, I don't think they will be getting too many customers to spend their prices for such crummy quality. Also, my furniture chairs were made in China and the seats have no bottom supports. I'm waiting for the day when the cushions will just fall to the floor. Crummy customer relations at a very HIGH price. Stay awayfrom them!!

Terrible company
Thanks to the arrogant and discriminatory attitude of their sales person at Ethan Allen, NAtick MA, that their business is now going to the other three furniture stores in the area. The big white guy - not sure what is name is, does not enjoy working there. I am sure any one who has had the experience like mine will never step into that store again. I was a loyal customer of theirs for the last 5 years. But after this experience, no more Ethan Allen for me.

The woman at the front desk silently witness the discriminatory attitude of this big guy.
