I rented a duplex from them for 1 year. The place was not the cleanest when I moved in and I tried to document everything on the move-in form. The place I think is at least 20 years old and they try not to fix anything. The kitchen floor was so dirty and black that my mom had to buy a scrub-brush and clean it on her hands and knees. The carpet was coming up in the living room and they glued a long blue plastic piece down (the carpet is tan), which started coming up within the year I was there. The basement door didn't latch shut, so they put screws in the ceiling to stop the door from pushing into the basement. One of the bathroom doors was pealing a layer and they glued it and clamped it. The cupboards look like the originals. Basically, they do the cheapest, smallest amount to "fix" the problems. There is a reason that this place is the cheapest duplex in the Madison area. Well, I was a great tenant. I always paid the rent early or on time and I was never loud. When I moved out, I cleaned everything, even the stuff that was dirty when I moved in (I originally cleaned it when I moved in too) because the deposit was a whole month's rent. When I did the walk out with the guy, he was a complete jerk. He said it wasn't clean and that the new people are moving in the next day and he needed a cleaning person to come in. I was following him around cleaning every little speck he saw and he said it still didn't look clean. I explained all the things that I wrote about earlier (and more) and he didn't care. He left the back door open so I could come back and clean later, after work. Which I did! I came back and recleaned things that I cleaned the other night. And I made my friend come in and verify how clean it was and I took 50+ pictures. I felt like they were going to keep my money. The place was dirty and open for at least a month before I moved in and now that I cleaned the place better than when I moved in, they needed a professional cleaner. They sent me a copy of the cleaner's worksheet and they recleaned the whole thing. The landlord didn't charge me for the whole cleaning bill, but it was ridiculous that I was charged. There was no damage or utilities bill unpaid so they didn't charge me that, but they had to charge me for cleaning. I feel like the whole thing was unfair and I would suggest that people not go to this landlord because they just want your money.
