We did not authorize or agree to any fees incurred. Car was stolen, towing yard Police authorized to tow the car charges hundeds of dollars of fees and demands only cash payment for a relationship that we did not choose to establish - as the victims of a theift crime.
FEEL FREE TO USE THIS REAL LIFE LETTER SENT TO EWING BROS. AS A TEMPLATE FOR YOUR OWN COMPLAINTS:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Ewing Bros:
On approx. November 2, 2009 you towed my spouses vehicle that was stolen while we were out of the country in Mexico. The Police allowed this to happen while we were unable to do anything about it.
1993 Red Plymouth Sundance: Belonging to ____________- worth less than $500 dollars.
___________________ has been unemployed with no income for over a year now and has no way to be able to pay the impound fees assessed by you folks as he has no money. He is in college trying to make that happen, but for now I work two jobs and pay for everything which leaves us in this messed up situation. Your company happens to be the gate-keepers of his only form of transportation and only way to be able to keep attempting to get a job.
It was stolen from him at the worst possible time.
The car thieves STOLE his car, his only asset, from in front of our house. By the time we got back into the country, you folks had already charged more than the car is worth in fees for it sitting there.
I asked him to go down to try to discuss this with your staff today as there is always something that can be worked out. I didn't want him to give up and lose the last thing he has left of any value.
I thought, "there must be something that can be done". This isn't right. The car isn't worth the impound fees you are trying to charge. We didn't ask for the car to be stolen. I cannot imagine how, in this economy, this remains the law. This should be illegal.
He came down today and visited Cheryl to ask for some sort of payment plan, taking money off the impound fees, or working with him to get the car back. He stated that nothing could be done, and that:
1) You are trying to charge over $800 for the fees. (Value of the car was $500 two years ago).
2) If he cant come up with the money, you will take his car.
3) You take only cash - no payment plans or credit.
4) You will probably scrap his car as it is very damaged.
5) Even AFTER you steal his car you will then report this debt on his credit. Further damaging his situation.
6) There is nothing he can do.
This is wrong for a variety of reasons... He is the VICTIM in this situation, you are the second set of thieves that just happen to work in conjunction with the government. There IS something that can be done. I know you have choices, you have options, you have business practices. The fact that our Police deliver STOLEN vehicles into a system that leaves the victim helpless is wrong.
He has no options other than to have his credit further damaged and lose his car into a "system" rather than get it back and move on with our lives. Especially when this is obviously happening for no good reason. It doesn't matter to you guys if you have a cheap old car sitting there - it will cost you more to take it from him, than to give it back to him.
If he had a job, or money to afford your unanticipated "towing fees" I can assure you this would be much different. We do plan to press charges against the thieves, but you will have already taken his car and charged him for it by the time we see a day in court or have a chance for restitution to prevail.
"Ewing Bros., Inc. is the largest, oldest family owned Towing Company in Las Vegas."
With a reputation to maintain - why wouldn't you work with "people" who are the victims of crime in your community?
I wish that in circumstances like this that good will, common sense, and better judgment would prevail. This does have a larger affect than you folks may realize.
I happen to be pretty upset from this ordeal, we do plan to go to the media, congressmen, legislators, attorneys, friends, family, online communities, review websites, or any other forum that will hear this and do something about it. Again, I think you can agree - this is not right.
This story will also be posted everywhere to warn others of this very thing happening. I am tired of the "greatest country in the world" having the most ridiculous things happen to the law abiding citizens - while the crooks run free.
As you can imagine, without a form of transportation for him to be able to get to a potential job, he will have plenty of time to address this.
I assure you, that cheap little red car is not worth the ransom you are holding it for.
If you would like, we are willing to discuss any options that remain. But alas, we were told "there is nothing that can be done". Is this true?
If nothing else, I hope this has been a good laugh. Add this one to the stack of dissatisfied victims.
Sincerely,
