Hi. I work in audio and know the history of the FCC. They were started and continue to be a technical standards board that set the rules for airing of radio and television on "public resources."
There is no debate that they have no business monitoring content. They are an engineering organization and not a censoring body.
The volume of Television is extremely inconsistent, overly loud and distorted. I believe that this is a public safety issue because the equalization being used is unnatural and is being used to trick us into thinking it is louder than it is. Without getting too technical, I think children who's hearing is especially sensitive are being harmed and adults alike.
We are being forced to hurt our hearing by turning the volume up so that we can understand the words being said because the other frequencies are boosted to unacceptable levels.
The FCC has a duty to set the technical standards for public resources, which at the very least Local TV is considered to be. They have dropped the ball and decided to allow TV to be a free-for-all. They implemented this successfully in the past, which actually bypasses a record producer's ability to maximize the volume of a recording. It's damn time something was done on Television.
