Checking Account
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epkw-OLxKYw&feature=channel_video_title
This video explains everything. You may need to pause a few parts to read the story. Basically, I animated a phone call I recorded when calling back Fifth Third Bank after getting harassing phone calls for almost a month. I called them three times and told them to remove me from their call list and they said they couldn't and wouldn't. The story is basically ridiculous. I urge you to watch the video if you have time. Their customer service is horrible. I have filed complaints here, with the BBB of Cincinnati, Consumer Affairs, The Federal Reserve, and the FTC Do Not Call Registry (many many times, every phone call they make). Ever since I told them to stop calling me and I would be closing my account due to their harassment, their call volume has increased. They call many times daily and it's sickening me.

$8 Fee for cashing a personal check
The only bank I've been to that charges to cash personal checks. I've been to one bank that charges to cash business checks. I think it's all a big ripoff . If I pay my utility bill or phone bill with a check, does the utility company or phone company have to pay that fee? Somehow, I doubt it. This should be illegal. It defeats the purpose of paying by check. I suppose I could charge my customers a fee for paying by check. And alienate them.

ATM
Fifth Third Bank,
I opened an account and told them I did not want to have my ATM account pay beyond my balance.
Not only did it pay beyond balance but it took 8 days to send a notice at an additional charge of $8.00 a day plus $33.00 for over draft. And to close my account required an additional $25.00 . This brought my final charge to $112.50 after paying the difference in my account. I was in the bank on four different occasions trying to get my checks mailed to me. After 3 months still no checks.

Fraudulent bank charges
I had a beginning balance in my checking account of almost $300 the day my overdraft took place. I admit the $24 overdraft was indeed my fault, an accounting error in my check register, even though the ONE check that overdrew was actually written to MY company, to deposit in my company account which was ALSO at Fifth Third Bank. I was prepared to pay the $37 overdraft fee for the one overdraft and cover the $24 that bounced...I mean who was going to return it? Me? To Me? Anyway, I awoke to find $293 in overdraft fees posted to my account the next morning because of the way Fifth Third Bank and certain 'other' banks rearrange their ledgers which 'allows' them to charge multiple fraudulent and excessive overdraft fees on purchases made by debit card that have already CLEARED on that day as they are pre-approved. My online ledger was showing a balance still on my account after all my debit purchases. Not realizing I had miscalculated my register when my check to myself (my company) was posted that night, instead of charging me for the actual overdraft of the check, they rearranged everything on my ledger that 'allowed' them to charge 'multiple' $37 overdraft fees on my debit purchases that day as if I had had a $0 balance on my account! My direct deposit was to happen that night at midnight, but because I couldn't make a deposit on that day before 2pm, I awoke to find my entire deposit taken and additional fees taken making my account -$531!!! I had to borrow money to cover my negative balance, nothing pending on my account. I deposited enough to have a credit balance on my account of $159. I made 2 purchases that day. Low and behold I awoke the next morning to have been charged another $189 in overdraft fees leaving me with another negative balance of -$103. The trickle down effect of my first overdraft keeps going. I again go to my bank asking about this fee and I'm told these fees are for the day before yesterday! I was frantically searching my ledger to see what they were talking about and there were a couple of 'foreign atm fees' of $2 that didn't show on my account until after that first overdraft. This still did not add up to me according to the fees they charge and I STILL cannot figure it out. Anyway, trying to wrap up my long story, I made a deposit as soon as I found out about the last fees, had a credit balance on my account all weekend of $12 on MY ONLINE LEDGER, awoke on Tuesday to find out they had charged me another $86 in overdraft fees, supposedly for the 2 purchases I made on the day I deposited the money that showed I had $159. They considered those purchases 'pending', and when the previous $189 overdraft hit, that in turn overdrafted THOSE 2 purchases! All this I believe because even though I made my deposit early Sunday morning, the deposit was 'pending', not actually posted until Tuesday...and I'm the one who has to pay for THEIR POLICIES. All in all I have deposited nearly $717 to cover a $24 overdraft of ONE check in stead of the $37 overdraft fee that I TRULY AND HONESTLY owed them. And had they charged me only the one $37 overdraft fee, none of the other overdrafts would have happened. This domino effect is absoutely devastating to the common consumer like myself who lives paycheck to paycheck. If any of us decided to rearrange a ledger at our place of work we would be fired. If ANY other industry or business tried such a thing it would be considered 'Theft by Deception'. Which in reality is exactly what it is. This HAS to be a LOOPHOLE in the banking laws that banks have adopted as 'Policy' to legally extort money from the consumer. It's hard for me to fathom that this isn't a 'gray area' in the law that some great and wonderful financial legal team has found to get more money out of the very people who are supposed to be able to trust them with their money. I WANT TO CLOSE THIS LOOPHOLE. I WANT A CLASS ACTION SUIT STARTED AGAINST FIFTH THIRD BANK AND OTHER BANKS WHO HAVE ADOPTED THIS SO-CALLED 'POLICY'. I can't imagine how many $$Millions$$ of dollars in these excessive and fraudulent fees have been stolen from consumers all over the country. I would be interested to know how these banks hide these extorted monies when they file their taxes. If you're an attorney willing to start a class-action suit I'll be the first in line. I am filing formal complaints with the Attorney General, the State Banking Office, the FDIC, the SEC, the Federal Reserve, Consumer Protection, the Comptroller of the US Currency, my State Representative, and Congress. And Michael Moore, if you want to expose someone in your NEXT FILM, PLEASE EXPOSE THE BANKING AND FINANCIAL INDUSTRY FOR WHAT IT REALLY IS. It's no wonder our financial system is failing and the economy is collapsing. It's because of greed. Plain and simple. Think about this...we actually have to PAY someone to TAKE OUR PAYMENTS these days! How twisted is that!

Refused to help when mortgage in danger
Once Fifth Third Bank gets your mortgage, you WILL pay and pay on time every month. File the papers for a hardship reduction, loan mitigation, or loan modification and you will be turned down.
I've been trying to work with them since December, 2010 and have filed tons of paperwork only to be told that no change could be made to my home loan for totally lame reasons. I have a lien on the house. This should be a reason to help me not to turn me down. I've had cancer. I have $15, 000 in medical bills.

poor banking service
I was conducting business as a supervisor of a non profit organization who does home delivered meals for the elderly and, unfortunately, has a business bank account with Fifth Third Bank. I brought in our end of the week deposit, of around $1000.00, and also had a petty cash check from our business account that I needed to cash - the grand sum of $187.00. These bozos wanted to charge me $8.00 to cash the company petty cash check drawn on their bank, because I didn't have a PERSONAL account with them. This makes no sense whatsoever. I was not there doing business for myself, this was not for my benefit, this was part of a business transaction on their bank's business account. The manager was so busy eating a Dairy Queen frozen dessert - at 2:00 in the afternoon (6/10/11) that she wouldn't even get up to talk with me. I was so outraged and incredulous at the insideous, assinine and ridiculously total lack of intelligence at this "policy" that I was almost speechless. The teller said "I'm really sorry" - they are sorry all right - a sorry excuse of a cluster of unbelievably moronic "bankers". By the way, I've done the very same thing on several occassions before, but now, all at once, they want to charge me. This is so wrong on so many levels I don't know where to start. My boss, the County Director of this non profit, had to go cash the check for me. This cost me untold time, her time and frustration that is almost undescribable. I am so frustrated at the "dumbing down of America" where business/people have lost all perspective and concept of reality and logic. Fifth Third has to be the absolutely WORST bank I have EVER had the displeasure of dealing with. This will cost them so much in negative publicity - I will tell anyone who will listen this absurd response and policy of theirs. Fifth Third Bank sucks beyond the telling!

Overdraft Fees
Under the new debit card useage law, overdraft fees are not permitted on debit card purchases unless the customer decides to opt into the banks' overdraft protection service. Well, I had declined it. In that case, the $2.31 purchase I made should have been declined. Because the purchase was for gasoline (I was filling a gas can), the gas station pegged a $75 debit upon turning on the pump. So when I got my statement, I discovered $25 overdraft fee plus $8 a day account overdrawn fee totalling over $200! For a $2.31 transaction. Does anybody else--besides the bank--think this is fair? I didn't think so and attempted to reason with the bank--to no avail. I'm not paying it. They call and harrass me everyday. But I'm only agreeing to paying the $2.31. I feel I should owe nothing else and I'll be darned if I pay them their $200 fee.

Lost $5,000 check
Bank here at your own risk.
Fifth Third lost a $5, 000 check. It went into my account and the next day when I checked online it was gone. I went back to the branch where I had deposited the check (Oak Park Illinois) and they had absolutely no record of the check ever being deposited. Not electronically, not in their log, not anywhere. The only record, per the bank manager, was the receipt in my hand, and of course the money withdrawn from Chase. The handling of this matter from a customer service perspective was rude and unprofessional.
Bank here (Fifth Third) only if you do not care how you are treated or how incompetently the staff performs!
