Scam charges
Fifth third bank is a completely unethical organization in the banking industry. They only post $100 of a person's deposit for 3 days no matter how long they have been banking with them or if they have a 100, 000 dollars on deposit with them. They post date deposits and also charge fees for 'pre-authorizations' that have not even posted to a customer's account. They are disgusting in terms of their predatory fee practices. I imagine most of their profit is derived from this. The 'pre-authorization' debit overdraft charge practice was actually almost outlawed in 2005 and Fifth Third is one of very few banks that pull this crap on their customers. Do not ever use this bank for anything... You will regret it deeply. They are a bunch of scumbags who specialize on charging as many fees as they can even when a customer has plenty of money in their account. Oh and if you happen to have some unauthorized charges on your account watch out. They will take 15 or more business days to investigate and in the mean time rake up as many fees as they think they can stick you with. Scumbags.

Lost my payments
Fifth Third Bank lost my April, May and June mortgage payment. They called my home on an "unknown caller" number on several occassions to find out when I would make my payment? Ha, They also sent delinquent notices, Ha. I faxed over to them the confirmations numbers from my online banking of all my payments. I received a call on SUNDAY from an unknown caller number, it was Fifth Third Bank and a guy, named "Paul" using language as if he was a collection agency was demanding money. The late payment information showed up on my credit report!!! I asked Paul for the CEO information, he gave a name but no contact information.
I found on my own it is Kevin Kabbot from the headquarters in Cinninati, Ohio.

Overcharging late fees and escrow
I have been trying to correct an overcharging problem with this bank for about 2 months now. When asked to speak to someone else, the girl said "sure... you can call back" and hung up on me. I am being overcharged on late fees, double to triple for about 4 years now. they were overcharging me in my monthly payments by almost 100 dollars per month for over 16 months. I was told they would have to recalculate and that takes time! I am still waiting. And to top it off, they were taking me to court for being behind on my payments. I could have lost my home. So far I have found about 2 k they overcharged me. And I am still not done. I have to go over one issue at a time since that is all they can handle.

Customer service is awful
I have been given incorrect information from my banks customer service repeatedly and then the manager calls to tell me my account in negative. Not only does she tell me a specific check did not go thru when in fact it did, I am also charged huge fees. This is absolutely ridiculous. I have no confidence in this bank at all. I have called the bank before and there response time is hours. I am sorry I went with this bank.

Fraudulent actions
My Fifth Thirds Checking Accountant has a $1, 000 MATRIX. They clear all checks and debit transactions up to $1, 000 over my balance. They do charge $33 per item and a 45 daily overdraft fee. Fair Enough. During a recent call, initiated by me, the teller suggested that I add a $300 overdraft 'credit line'. This would allow me to add $300 to my checking account and the $300 would be charged to a Fifth Third Credit Card. I would pay interest (after 30 days) but would NOT be charged the $33 per item fee.
A few weeks later I received a Fifth Third (HSBC) credit card that was NOT tied to my checking account. I also received a rejection letter from J BARTON. Bankcard Credit 5050 Kingsley Drive Cincinnati, Ohio 45263 telling me that my Platinum Mastercard Application was not approved. I never asked for a $10K credit line. I did receive a Mastercard for a lesser amount and a DIFFERENT BANK --- HSBC Bank Nevada, N.A. Fifth Thirds applied for a card, without my consent, from another institution.
First they apply for a high limit card from themselves and reject me. Next they pass me off to another company. They issue me a card that has nothing to do with fifth thirds checking or credit card services and I still do not have my $300 overdraft credit-line.
Did I mention that did give me a $20K auto loan!

Terrible place
I am appalled at this banks application process. I am also appalled at the level of professionalism demonstrated by the employees in one particular branch. I am researching what the consequences are to banks that fail to comply with federally mandated disclosure laws that were certainly broken by not 1 but 2 employees at a Mchenry County branch.
In my situation, I called to speak with my personal banker when I could not access my account on line. At that time I was having some marital issues and was concerned that my access to our joint account had been removed with a password change or possibly my money had been pulled and placed in a private account my husband had at the bank. My personal banker could have told me that no money was removed or reset my password, thereby ending the entire situation. However, she chose to take a different route. I can only assume she chose to open a new account because there is some kind of incentive for her to open as many accounts as possible.
I discussed confidential information with my personal banker on the phone. She assured me that there was no problem, she would just transfer some money out of the joint account and put it into a new checking account that only I would have access to. The account was opened and I was told to come in later that day to sign the paperwork on the checking account. I came in to sign paper work and she asked me if I wanted overdraft protection, checks or a credit card. I said NO to all three. I signed a few documents quickly as I was trying to get out and pick up my kids. As I was standing up to leave she slid a page over and said oh yeah sign this, it just says I had to pull your credit to open your checking account. I signed it, thinking nothing of it, the account was already opened so It would not effect my credit right?
I had brought in one of my W2's and a bill to prove who I was because I only had a ticket not a license at the time. My banker took income information and employer info from only one of my W2's (not all) my W2's and applied for a credit card I specifically said I did not want. She entered false information on a credit application which I later found out was for the overdraft protection that I had clearly declined when asked about.
I mentioned that I was concerned that there was another employee at the bank that was friends with my husband and his family. I stated that I was unsure about keeping any private account at this bank because I did not want my confidential business discussed. Again, I was assured that my privacy and account information would not be discussed. I left the bank feeling relieved that I had my own account and knowing that everything was ok.
Two weeks later a credit card shows up in my mailbox. At the same time that I am opening a credit card (I did not apply for or want)... my mother in law calls to ask what is going on in my marriage, she had been asked by the teller at the bank, her former neighbor and friend, What was going on with me and my husband? The teller had disclosed information to my mother-in -law that my 'personal banker' received over the phone. It was not possible for the teller to 'overhear' what I was saying.
Why did the teller even know there were problems? Because she and my 'personal banker' had discussed what was said in confidence on a phone. I still can't figure out in what world a teller thinks its ok to disclose account information to perfect strangers or to anyone who is not listed on the account. Nonetheless, I am a victim of careless gossip in addition to credit fraud.
To top it all off, I received (a few days later) a denial letter saying that I had been denied overdraft protection as well. Again I did not want overdraft protection. No one disclosed annual fees or any of the federally mandated disclosure requirements when soliciting credit that I had clearly declined. My personal banker made up an application against my instructions with inaccurate information and has damaged my credit score not once but two times. I can not refinance my home now and I have yet to resolve this issue. I did close my checking account. I want to warn all consumers to beware of the fraudulent and unprofessional practices this bank continues to demonstrate during its day to day business.

relocation
I recently relocated to Penn from Cincinnati, OH. I forgot to close my checking/debit card account in person at site branch before leaving. In Oct 2007, I made a full payoff of credit card for $87.89 (that was stated as card balance). I also updated all contact information to new address and phone number. In January I recieved a letter indicating that my credit card balance has been due for 60 days and that they had reported to credit bureau. It turns out that the credit balance i paid in full on hte internet was the balance from LAST statement and did not reflect a late payment charge to my account made a week prior. So when I paid the 87.89 i really owed 87.89 + 19.00 dollars but the website wont tell you that until next statement. My attempt to update my contact information apparently failed. My old number area code (859) had been changed to area code (717) but nothing else was changed. When I asked customer service when was this information changed, "we do not have that information". So no ability to explain how my contact info had been partially updated. The reason this is a big deal is because, i was told, had they had the proper contact information they would have contacted my right away about the matter. This is one of the worst banks I have ever!!! seen in operation. If you are in Ohio/PA area, please check into this bank before signing anything. PNC bank is much much better to deal with.

debit card number theft
On April 15, 2008 we were notified that our debit card number had been stolen in the Sweet Bay/Hanndford security breach. Turns out this happened in February 2008. On April 18, I notified 5/3 that money was fraudulantly being debited out of our account, more than was actually in the account since we have overdraft protection. On 4/21, the account was still being debited. We followed their procedures and are now told that the fraudulant charges are now being investigated by the credit card company. Meanwhile we are out over $1000, we have overdraft charges and the bank will not even remove the ATM charges. We have NEVER heard back from 5/3 on any of the above. Meanwhile, other banks handled the security breach by immediately issuing new cards. The only new card we recieved from 5/3 had the old, compromised number on it. Despite numerous calls, we have never recieved a new debit card for this account into which our SS checks are deposited.
