Fifth Third Bank as an Employer
If you think being a customer of Fifth Third bank is treacherous, you should should try working for them.
1) They frequently "forget" to pay you your shift differential. You have to argue to get it, and they will fix it on their own time, a couple months after you point out that it is missing.
2) They sometimes forget to pay you your overtime, and like the shift differential they forget to pay you, it will be adjusted months later.
3) Always get offers of salary increases in writing. You will find out why after you don't see it on your paycheck for a few months, and after mentioning this for a dozen times or so, the person who told you about the pay increase 3 different times, forgot they told you and will claim the conversation about your pay increase ever happened.
4) An overwhelming majority of the staff in certain departments are females and for some odd reason the handful of men who work there are quickly promoted to management, leaving women with far more accomplished backgrounds behind. If you are a woman at Fifth Third Bank, forget your advanced degrees, previous management experience, and directly related banking experience. They are not relevant at Fifth Third Bank.
5) The HR department doesn't even respond to many employment inquiries. I have heard of people applying several times to get an entry level job, even with years of related experience. They will reject your application for such tiny things as not holding your last job for more than 1 year. It doesn't matter how qualified you are or what wonderful talent you'd bring to the office. Sometimes they will contact you months after you originally applied. Amazingly, you'd think such tight application process would improve the quality of people allowed into the doors, but no, this is not the case. I see many employees with bad English and limited logic.
6) They have bonus incentives that are so hard to get, hardly anyone qualifies to get them. Employees make jokes about them. To qualify for them, you must pass a series of somewhat subjective criteria.

Predatory charges!
My gripe is that on the 04-04-08 my wife and I had the sum of $392 in our checking account, last weekend we done things and went places the same as any Kentucky resident would do, well on Sunday night we were left with a balance of $165 in our account and I was the lucky bidder on eBay to the amount of $131. Being straight up I paid the amount owed realizing that we'd have $35 left in the account and with payday being on Wednesday this seemed ok. Well to my shock and horror and an ear bashing from the wife she'd checked the account on Monday morning and our Vonage bill had come out also leaving us with the grand total of $4 in the account. Meanwhile our KY Utilities bill was due also and this is where the nightmare begins. As there were insufficient sums in the account it was not paid and we were charged $33. I can live with that yet the Fifth Third Bank has charged us overdraft fees on an additional 11 items with charges totaling $396!

Charged me 200.00 for being 3.45 overdraft on my account!
I was overdrawn on my account by $3.45. I went to my bank to find out what had not cleared was told 1 check was paid but did not clear. I then asked how much money I needed to deposit into the account to cover the other 3 transactions that would go through that night. I was told it didn't matter that I was still going to be charged the $33.00 fee for each transaction. I then went home and called the 800 # that was provided and asked them about the charges on my acc. I was then told that there was 2 other debit fees that didn't clear. That I was gonna be charged for not 1 or 2 but 3 fees at $33.00. I then hung up on the customer service person cause I was fuming. I then called the 800 # cause I couldn't figure how the lady got her figures. When I talked to the 3rd person she told me that there was 2 debits that didn't clear and because they couldn't send back 2 debits they chose 2 checks to send back that even tho the money is in the account to cover them 2 checks they still have to send them back in replace of the 2 debits not clearing. That I will be charged $132.00 in bounce check fees. How is it right for them to take 2 cleared checks and return them because they cant send 2 debits back? This is illegal and I will be calling BBB and contacting an attorney on this matter... DON'T DEAL WITH FIFTH THIRD BANK!!! IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW CAREFUL YOU ARE THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF!!! YOU MAY AS WELL GIVE EM YOUR PAYCHECK FOR THE WEEK FOR FREE CAUSE THEY WILL EVENTUALLY END UP WITH IT.
Thank God my husband was able to stop his direct deposit from going into that account 3 days before it was due to be deposited. I will now accrue more fees because I refuse to deposit anymore free money to fifth third bank...

customer service
As a fifth third customer...they let my debit/credit card expire...took three calls to customer service to issue a new card..I learned you can not get a temporary atm card issued...unless you go to the branch where you opened your account. In my case it was 75 miles away. Also had my taxes electronicaly filed and to be directed deposited into my account...used the routing number and account number on my checks...when the irs sent it to my account it was rejected by fifth third and sent back to the irs because they stated the routing number was wrong...even though it had my correct address and correct account number on it...customer service stated it is not there job to call me and notify me of a problem...I have complained and complained but it does no good...so i will no longer be a customer of fifth third...
to all you customer service reps at fifth third...you stink...

Tax Deposit Missing
For three months I have been asking 53 to provide the IRS with an advice of credit to track my tax deposit for my employee witholding. My branch has assured me that the matter has been settled twice, only to have the IRS contact me again stating the matter is not settled due the failure of fifth third to provide an advice of credit.
Either 53 can't or won't provide this information as requested which leave me with the desicion of whether to find a new bank.

Steals money with their overdraft!
Even though I deposited $250 at 7:30 in the morning - this bank decided not to actually deposit the money until that evening, and also decided to put through any charges for that day and then charge me overdraft charges for them, EVEN THOUGH THEY HAD THE FUNDS IN THEIR BUILDING AT 7:30 A.M. I have contacted them and told them to close my account IMMEDIATELY as they charged me $124 in overdraft charges for ONE DAY. They are a scam and a rip off! I can't afford to work to pay them to sit on their asses! If they do not close my account immediately I will be seeking an attorney to sue them. WORSE BANK IN THE WORLD!

Terrible customer service!
As an excellent Fifth Third customer, with no late payments, excellent credit history and score, I'm now faced with some of the scenarios that I read about here. My payments are due the 5th of each month. I make (send) my payment in on the 19th of the previous month. I sent a payment on Jan 19th for my Feb 5th bill.
On Feb 4th, my online checking showed it had never cleared and I called Fifth Third. Their customer rep, though sympathetic, said it was lost in the mail and to stop payment of that payment and send another as I had a 10 day grace period. I suggested stopping the payment and I'd do an electronic check with him over the phone. His reply was that I could not do so until the payment was actually late. So I stopped the check, was charged $29 by my bank to do so and mailed another payment.
Checking my online account on Feb 12 (two days before my grace period was up) I saw my second attempt at payment had not been posted to my account. Again I call and was told to wait another day as they had not received it but the first payment did arrive on the 4th after my first call (what a coincidence) but of course they couldn't post it as it was stopped by my bank. I wait till today, called Fifth Turd and still they have not received it and of course use the excuse of the postal service. I asked for a supervisor (an unsympathetic and unfeeling person) who again blames the postal service and says if it does not arrive until after the 14th that I will be assessed a late fee.
From here on out I will be sending the checks with a receiver confirmation and catch them at their little game but in the meantime I'm at their mercy and being held hostage. I'll keep you all posted and any comments will be appreciated.

Failed to cancel credit card and accumulated fees!
Created Credit Card Error then Failed to robustly close/cancel credit card - then abuse starts In Oct-2007 Fifth Third bank failed to mail billing payment invoices on a credit card I had just opened. This resulted in late fees. I went to the local branch and the Fifth Third representative canceled the account for me, but the main office failed to execute and complete the closure. Over the next 4 months charges and late fees continued even though the account was canceled.
Fifth Third turned the account over to their internal collections and the calls began. The collections representative refused to hear that their office had created the problem and was working to correct it however the main office failed to close the account and began a run of abuse.
02Feb2008 - three phones calls progressively more abusive. I went to the local 5/3 branch and worked with the representative to get the account resolved one more time - which he did professionally and politely. 4 hours later the 5/3 collections called again and began yelling and cursing me as I attempted to politely explain that their branch office was resolving the issue.
5/3rd collections: 800-457-0839 5/3 collections rep John 04feb08 1155am - he refuses to give his extension number so I can call him back. He also refuses to call the main office or any other 5/3rd representative to check on the problem. He refuses to hear the results of their own branches review of the issue. He is apparently not the person that called Saturday. He did confess, on the phone that they use yelling and cursing and do not apologize for it.
5/3rd main office customer service: Diane ext 65414 at 1147am 04feb08. Gave me the number of the 5/3rd collections. She also refused to assist in resolving the issue. Similarly, would not apologize for the abusive treatment and reported that this is accepted policy of the bank – however 5/3 knowingly partitions the two offices (collections and banking) for efficiency.
Meanwhile the collections continue to call my wife, who has medical problems, and progress the abusive calls.
An email was sent from the customer rep at the local branch, who is attempting to correct the issue, this is ignored by the rest of 5/3 management and collections even though their banking records (Which the rep gave a copy to me) clearly show they have an account error.
Such abuse and unprofessional behavior as never experienced before. And that 5/3 reps and management actually feel that this is appropriate behavior. Furthermore, they refused to help or acknowledge that their system has an error even though their own branch rep demonstrated it clearly. He had to work through their convoluted system by himself. If there were not that ONE person in all of 5/3 who listened, I would be in dire straights.
My lawyer, acknowledging that 5/3 is an unprofessional company, recommended that I move my accounts to another bank to avoid retribution. They are that bad as to try to further abuse me for proving them wrong.

Stealing money through overdraft fees!
I have a Fifth Third Student Checking account with them, and once I went only $7.70 over my current balance. Within an hour of discovering it, I had brought my account to $0.05 in the black. However, I checked my balance the next day and found that I was $32.95 in the red because of an overdraft charge! I anticipated that, so it didn't bother me too much at the time. However, my paycheck was deposited today and I found out that they had assessed me a total of $103 in overdraft charges. They took my whole paycheck and still left me $3 in overdraft. I called them and they say if I put the $3 in today that I won't be assessed any further fees. If they do assess me again, there will be a fresh complaint on here and a call to the Better Business Bureau.

Bogus fees added to mortgage payoff!
As a REALTOR, I was asked to help a client work out a short sale on her home, after she lost her job. The 1st mortgage was thru 5/3 and the 2nd was thru PNC. I spoke to 5/3 and they agreed to let me handle the account for her and began conferring with me. We aggressively marketed the property and received an offer in less than 3 months, in which 5/3 would be paid off including the fees, penalty and interest and the 2nd would get about half of their payoff. PNC agreed to this, since they had an ex-husband to go to collect the rest of their money from. We had everything in order and was waiting for the final payoff from 5/3. They managed to drag their feet for another 2 weeks until their was 1 day left until the closing. The prospective buyer had inspections done and had to have utilities turned on to do so. The day before the closing, an employee of 5/3 strategically emailed me the final payoff and it was over $7200.00 more than the payoff that had been given to both me and the 2nd mortgage co. !! Since they had refused to give me anything in writing the entire time I had the property listed, I had no recourse. They were already going to get COMPLETE PAYOFF PLUS ABOUT $4500.00 AND THAT WASNT ENOUGH. They claimed the excess fees were attorney fees, however, it is over a month later and they still have not served papers to the owner, nor is there any evidence that Foreclosure is in process. About a week ago, they told me to go ahead and continue to try to sell it because it wouldn't go into foreclosure for a while. I asked if it hadn't gone to foreclosure yet, what were the excess fees for. I talked to the manager of the loss mitigation dept, after much ado, and he said he would make sure someone didn't make a mistake. I have yet to hear from him.
THE END RESULT:
1.the house is sitting empty and un-winterized.
2.The seller is going to file bankruptcy.
3.The prospective buyer (single parent of 2) found out 3 days b4 Christmas that her and her 2 kids were NOT getting the house they had anticipated and are now out several hundred dollars. 4.Both the buyers agent and I wasted a lot of time and effort to find out that Fifth Thirds' staff are LIARS, THIEVES, and flat out CRIMINAL.
ALL REALTORS AND 5TH3RD MORTGAGE CUSTOMERS BEWARE: DON'T EXPECT THEM TO CARRY THRU WITH ANYTHING THEY SAY. GET IT IN WRITING AND THEN HOLD YOUR BREATH. FROM WHAT I'VE READ ON THIS SITE AND MANY OTHERS, THEY ARE GETTING AWAY WITH ROBBERY!!!
