Fifth Third Bank Reviews

scorned and burnt August 10, 2010
Car loan
My son (I co-signed) had a car loan with them. The loan started in 2005. Thanks to the economy he ended up filing bankruptcy. Even while under bankruptcy Fifth Third Bank was racking up the fees. I called to see what the pay off would be - $16, 000 for what should have been $8, 000. Not only that, put they were also adding $3 a day. What? Isn't that illegal? Talking to customer reps doesn't do any good. They are just plain rude. Needless to say, the car has now been repoed and I'm waiting to find out what other fees they will be tacking on. Greedy, usurpers. I will never, never, never do business with them again. This is one bank the government should investigate.

Shady business habits
we were told when we opened up our business accounts 10 years ago that the accounts have a matrix affixed to them. The matrix is cash set aside up to a certain amount to cover checks one would write, but the fee of $37.00 will apply. Out of thin air they pulled the matrix and never told us. This resulted in some checks being charged $37.00 up to 8 times, and a total in less than a month, $1321.00 in charges. They also would switch a large amount check ahead of many small ones, thus more bounces, more charges. They really are crooks.

customer service
I received a late charge notice from Fifth Third Bank today. I called customer service and was told it was an error, and that I would not be charged. I ask to speak to a supervisor, Stephanie, and ask that a letter be sent to me stating that the charge was an error on the part of the bank and that no fee would be charged. I was told that this was not something they could generate. A bank that cannot write a letter scares me more than a little. I was also told that I could not speak to an officer of the bank because they did not take phone calls. It seems that MR. P. BRIAN MOORE can sign inaccurate letters of money due but isn't qualified to follow up with a "whoops" letter clearing our credit status of any wrong doing. I ask if I could come to FifthThird's corporate office to speak to an officer and was told "no" that there were guards at the door and no one was allowed in. So now I am to trust the word of a bank that mischarged me in the first place that they will remember that my fees were waived. Is it any wonder that the people of this country mistrust banks and all they stand for? Any company whose top management refuses to talk to it's customers is not to be trusted.

Unauthorized Canceling of Accounts
I went to this Fifth Third on the Friday before Mother's Day of this year. I asked the person I talked to, to open a new checking account for me. I explained that I currently keep my school funds in my savings account, but I would rather have them in a checking account so that I do not have to transfer funds if I have to pay for something for school. The associate I spoke to was in a big hurry to leave and see his mom, and passed the work on to the branch manager. The branch manager misunderstood and closed ALL of my accounts! I only found this out after I told him I wanted to make a deposit into my primary account. He was confused because at this point I only had one account (a combined account of my normal bank account and my money for school).

Because he screwed up, he had to open me a whole new checking account. My checks were no longer good, and I could no longer use my debit card. I withdrew some money to get me through the weekend.

A few days later I found that the account he had closed had over drafted because there were still items that were pending. I have over draft protection, so my credit card kicked in and put $50 into the account to cover the over draft. The branch manager noticed this, but didn't call me. Instead, he removed what was left of the $50 and closed the account again. So...the account over drafted again and another $50 was taken from my credit card. The manager did the same thing once again, and did not call me. I signed in online and discovered all of this for myself.

I went to the bank and complained and one of the guys that worked there told me he would get it all straightened out. He said he would get the fees and the charges to my credit card fixed, because it was their fault since I didn't want that account closed in the first place. He told me it would take a week.

4 weeks later, the problem still wasn't fixed. I called the bank and one of the tellers took down my name and phone number. She told me I would be called right back by the associate I spoke to before. He never called me back.

A few days after that, I called again and the teller remembered me. She couldn't understand why the associate didn't call me back because she relayed the message to him. She put him on the phone and he said that he contacted some department to fix it. I told him it still hadn't been fixed and I had expected a phone call back from him when I originally called. He did not say anything to that, instead, he told me to hold while he contacted someone else. When he came back on the line he told me it would take about a week to fix. At this point I was so unbelievably annoyed! I told him I would believe it when I see it.

Yesterday, I went to the bank to deposit my paycheck. The associate was servicing people in the drive thru. He asked me if I had seen my refund online. I told him I had not. "They opened your old checking account and put the $100 we owe you in there to put towards your credit card. Would you like me to transfer it to your credit card?" I told him yes.

I am so fed up with this company! Why did this take so long? If they could open up my original checking account, why didn't the manager just reopen it after he made the mistake? Why couldn't they apply the funds directly to my card? Why open up the old account to refund me? None of it makes any sense to me. If I didn't just buy new checks, I would leave this company.

Overdraft fees
I have been banking with fifth third for 8 years now and I was part of the constrruction company that built the bank that I use. I am laid off presently and was overjoyed when I got my fed tax return and state return. On the day that I deposited my checks, I had a balance of 209. dollars. I made deposits of 5102.00 and 249.00. I had the bank give me 200. of the 5102 deposit. So the final deposit was 4902.13 and 249.00. To cover my butt, I also took 200. advance from my unemployment direct deposit and applied it to the account. I had withdrawals/debit from my account for 396.06 and pending charges of 48.38. What happened is that FIFTH THIRD says that since I took 200 dollars from my deposit, that none of the funds of federal and state checks deposited to the account were able to be applied and my account was only 409.00. The 209. that origionally there as a starting balnce and the 200 I took an advance on (which cost me 20$ to do that) . FIFTH THIRD takes all the debits/payouts and pays them out biggest to smallest. That gives them the abilit to slam us with overdraft fees for as many small transactions as possible. I got hit with a 33. dollar fee for a 5.76 meal from Taco Bell. I used my card at a Giant Eagle for 3.18 and got SLAMMED with a 33 dollar fee. I see it two ways here, I guess even goverment tax return checks arent a certain thing to FIFTH THIRD and waits for funds, and if FIFTH THIRD tallied up the payouts/debits from my account in the timeline that purchaces were made, the overdrafts would have been a total of 66 dollars. Instead they organize them biggest to smallest that day so they can make their money. In all, I got hit with 165 dollars in overdraft fees. I called the 800 972 3030 and spoke with two differant people, one was a regular cust serv rep and she stated there was nothing she could do, so I asked to speak with a supervisor, Now mind you, I am not screaming or being an as**ole to either one of these people becasue I realize they are just puppets for FIFTH THIRD and its not their fault that their company does this. When I spoke to the supervisor, I got the same anwser, nothing that they could do since there had been a recent overdraft that was corrected a couple months ago where it was a situation like this. So if FIFTH THIRD makes a correction or reveses fees for something, no matter the reason, they will not help again. I ended the call by asking the supervisor if what she was saying is that "are you saying that Im Fu***d?" and she said lets keep this to a professional level. I restated the question by asking" are you saying that its ok for FIFTH THIRD to beat me down like this?" Her reply was that she hated thinking I was feeling that way. I had a hard time believing that when shes happy there with a job telling people why they lost their money. How else should a a laid off construction worker feel when half of his unemployment check is taken away by the bank he actually built? I feel disgusted, even knowing that FIFTH THIRD received 3.4 billion dollars from the Federal Bailout back in Jan. of 2009. I positive they made sure the funds were imedialty available when they got that Federal check.

Harrasing calls
Fifth Third banks automated system starts calling at 8:00 in the morning and every 30 minutes after that. We pick up to talk to them but there is nobody there. We are happy to talk with them and work out our payments but all this does is harass and irritate us. We have pulled all other accounts from the bank as a result but cannot with this account. Bad Business ! Bad Bank !

Terrible bank
This bank does not know what they are doing. when I opened an account, I was very clear that I did not want transaction approved unless there was money in the account. This was how the account worked for a few months and then a "computer" decided to start approving transactions without regard to having money in the account. Then I set up external transfer for paying my rent. They did this one month and then decided that since my name was not on the receiving account, I could not do this. Yet another feature sold to me that does not work. Never mind that fact that it took me a month to get my billing address and physical address corrected. This many it very hard for me to purchased items on line for my business.

I also enjoyed the call chastising me for depositing a $25 third party check in the ATM when there was $2, 000 in my account.

I am trying to get away from these people. It is going to cost me some bucks.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS BANK!

Overdraft fees
I'll be cancelling everything I have with this rotten bank. I had two small checks go into overdraft of about $250. They hid behind 'there is a cost for us to make the account good' to charge me $114 of fees on my $250. Thanks, Congress, for reining in bank abuses.

Outrageous Fees
Fifth Third Bank steals its cutomer's money without a gun by charging its customers outrageous fees through a computer generated program which is designed to maximze fees which Fifth Third arbitraily charges it customers. I have sued Fifth Third Bank in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois. The lawsuit I have filed alleges violations of the Illinois Consumer Fraud Act and the Illinois Electronic Funds Act. After, I filed my lawsuit against Fifth Third, I discovered this web site which contains many complaints against Fifth Third by Illinois consumers and others. If you are tired of getting robbed by Fifth Third Bank. send me an e-mail
