horrible customer service
If you think you have the worst bank out there, you have never banked with Fifth Third Bank based out of Cincinnati, Oh. After being with them for about 7 years, I still received horrible customer service. Whether it was going into my local branch or talking to customer service over the phone, their customer service and appreciation of my loyalty never existed. I am taking my money elsewhere!!! I won't get into the terrible details just DON'T OVER BANK WITH FIFTH THIRD!!!

Fifth Third Bank Complaint
I had been a customer of Fifth Third Bank for approximately 8 years. The problem started when they froze my home equity loan. I had access to $50K in cash until and was ready to make an real estate purchase. I spoke with the lender at Firth Third and they things were set but then I got a letter in the mail saying my account had been frozen. Not such a big deal because a lot of banks were doing it at that time and I could simply switch to a new bank. However, they would not refund the $65 annual fee associated with the account I had just paid on the account. They would not even pro rate it or anything.
Subsequently, I bounced a check inside an account where my home equity loan was the back up funds. Normally, if this would have happened it would have cost me $9.00 in a one time per transaction. Well I forgot that the account was closed and they ended up charging me $350+ dollars in fees. I verbally agreed to pay the two $39 charges and the two $9.00 overdraft charges and asked them to reconsider the remaining $260 in fees. I thought this was a reasonable request but the branch manager just let me know they would give me a $66 refund on the fees but that is all they could do.
I told him to keep his $66. I was going to close my account and inform as many people as I could about the situation.
If you stay with this bank or join this bank be prepared to be treated in a similar manner.
but then with Fifth Third but everyone was doing it.

Overdraft Fees & Lies
Just like many others here, I agree that 5/3 bank does everything they can to screw their customers. Our business got lured to 5/3 because of they had better credit card processing than we currently had and if it is deposited into a 5/3 account, its available the next day (vs the 3 days were were currently waiting). Well, first we were denied overdraft protections, after the rep said she could get it for us. We should have ran away then. Since then, they have repeatedly send through the highest check before the smaller items and we've been hit with overdraft fees in excess of $300 per day. The lady at the bank said they pay the highest first because thats what they view as the most important. Well then why, if there are 5 items going through and all 5 are going to be paid by the bank, and the account is going to go negative regardless, WHY do you do the highest one first when it was the last charge i did. Oh wait, i know the answer... to screw over the customers that are the only reason you are in business. So rather than getting one overdraft charge (which would have been legitimate, i admit) I got 5!. Absolutely absurd.
The other problem I've been having on a regular basis is my card being declined when there is money in the account. The bank says it's user error, but I'm confident that the people who are running my card are doing it right. Anyway, it's happed WAY to much to be user error.
Thirdly, our cc processing is supposed to have the funds available the next day. Well imagine my humiliation when i was buying diapers & formula with a line behind me and my card was declined at 7pm when we had processed and batched a payment for over $1000 the day before. I came home and checked the account and it wasn't in there yet, but I guess sometime between then and the next morning it hit the account. I'm sorry, but that hardly qualifies as "available the next business day". It can't be considered available if i cant use it.

Consistantly poor service
Very slow, understaffed customer service at most NW Indiana locations. Lowered credit limit on new credit card issued only 3 weeks and not charged over limit.

Poor service and questionable practices
My aged mother recently discovered a CD that was to have come due two years ago, Oct 2007. I called Fifth Third bank who confirmed the existence of the CD and the fact that they had not sent out a renewal notice in 2007. They offered to pay the face value of the CD, ignoring that they have been collecting interest on that money for two years without paying one cent to my mother. I asked for an interest adjustment to offset her losses. Three months later they finally told me that there is nothing that they are willing to do about this situation except cut a check for the amount on the CD. That’s what I call customer service. I am sorry that our government is bailing out businesses that do not care about their customers.

Bank in General
I would like to warn anyone that banks with Fifth Third about things they are doing now. ALWAYS, ALWAYS from now on ask if you have a positive balance in your account before you deposit any money. They will not tell you if you are overdrawn and you are out of luck once you hand them the money. ALSO be very careful of you ATM card. They are no longer blocking it being used if you happen to use it and you don't have enough in the bank.
I messed up in my bank book and it cost me 11 overdraft fees. And even when the girl told me what I would need to deposit to make it all right and I deposited that amount I still got charged more because they put the deposit through the next day. So they took fees out four more times before I got this all straighted out. Not once when I depoisted money was I told I was overdrawn. If I hadn't just happen to look my account up online I would have never know. I never got anything in the mail until 7 days later.
It just isn't me either. My aunt got it next from them. She has banked with them forever and has only overdrawn her account once in 35 years. But they took her whole paycheck and she still can't find in her book where she supposidly messed up.
These banks are needing money and I guess they are going to get it any way they can so be extremely careful. They are telling their tellers not to tell their customers if they are overdrawn and they are letting you use your Debit card even if you are overdrawn. And when ask about it they will lie through their teeth to you.
Just a warning. I hate Fifth Third Bank. Always have. And this is exactly why. Unfortunate for me I can't close my account at the moment. But as soon as I can I am out of this bank and I will tell everyone in the world to beware of them and to never ever bank with them. Even if I have to put a sign in my car for everyone to see.
Good luck to all.

Poor Service
The Manager at the Fifth Third location in the Cleveland/Collinwood location has no business being labeled as a Supervisor. He is rude, nasty, can't speak English, and is never at work. The Assistant, I think her name is Amber, is also rude, can't answer a direct question, and she also is never at work. They use to have excellent service until this Manager/Supervisor took over. The teller line is always busy. I was advised that one customer service representative was on vacation and would not return until August. They need some HELP at this location. The only nice person at this location in a financial representative by the name of Linda. She is alway nice, nows what she is doing and smart. I would stop doing business at this location if it was not for her.

Opt-out of Credit Card Changes
Fifth Third sent my husband and myself Notices about changes in Credit Card Terms. My husband recently paid his off, I still have a balance with a low interest rate. The notice came on June 19 and it states to opt-out you have to have the opt-out response at their address by June 23. My husband is out of town until June 22. With the postal service, unless we pay for overnight mail, these opt-out letters probably will not get there on time. I spoke with two customer reps at Fifth Third. They could only say "We're sorry you feel that way". I asked to speak to a supervicor. After waiting five minutes they came back and said the Supervisor had too many calls ahead of mine. No wonder!!! We have excellent credit, are never late, pay way more than required. This is just another example of a bailed out bank destroying the public trust. D. Robinson

customer service and lies
BEWARE!!! DO NOT USE THIS BANK FOR CREDIT OF ANY KIND!
We have a car loan with this bank and they offer us a "grace period" to avoid late fees. It is approximately 15 days each month. We have been called time after time on the 10th day of this grace period, looking for their payment. We've been called Sunday mornings at 8 a.m. and we've even been called New Year's day at 8 a.m. We've been told by their customer service reps that our grace period is only 10 days even though I had my payment book in my hand... *sigh*
Then...my husband gets a credit card from them... He ends up above his limit one month. He got his bill and paid what he was told was the minimum due, which would include the overlimit and if paid, he would avoid any additional fees. BIG LIE! I was told by their customer service that if you are over limit, you need to make a payment before your next bill is generated to avoid the next over limit fee. I asked how am I supposed to make a payment before the bill is generated and basically was told to use the automated bill options via the phone and internet... So, even though they tell me on my statement to make the minimum payment due to avoid any additional fees...what they mean is make the minimum payment before your next bill is generated to avoid any additional fees.
So, save yourself a big headache and avoid this bank at all costs. I will be closing these accounts as soon as I possibly can!
