debit a closed accout
I closed a checking account at fifth third bank and open another one, because i had filed a chapter 13 and gave creditors my account number so fifth third bank let them debit my checking for 2 months and charge me overdraft fees they said they could reinverse me my money . I have file complaint with BBB and Indiana attorney general. I will also filed other complaints they must be in with these creditors.

Overdraft Fee Abuse
Just last week 5/3 (Fifth Third Bank) charged me $444 in overdraft fees in one day. There was about $4000 in my account, its a busy business account. Traveling, I used the debit card on several occaisions earlier in the week to pay for trip expenses. In one night a $3000 check and a $1000 check went through, leaving an overdraft amount around $1000. In the morning when the bank opened, I called them and said I would be in directly after a morning appointment to make a deposit to cover the overdraft amount. I made a deposit of $1380 at 1030 that morning. There were 11 transactions that went through on the same date as the checks. Several of these were actually charged/purchased by me in the preceding days. The overdraft fee is $37.

So for what is actually an overdraft on one check, the bank justifies charging thier customer 12 overdraft fees. It didnt end there. The next day the charged me another $185 in fees and another $30 in fees. The next day another $6 fee. The next day another $18. The next day another $37 even though a $4875 wire transfer was recieved prior to the fee. Who knows why.
So if one doesn't agree or pay the fees, they are written off on the Checkcare System (or similar) and can not open a new account. I had several accounts with Firth Third to deal with the several boats that I manage. They have snowballed overdrafts on me before by
1) Debit Card Purchases - Even though the amount is deducted from the available balance, when the charge is made, they put the charge through 1 - 4 days later, pretty much it seems waiting for a larger check to go through, and then charge an overdraft fee on it.
2) Reordering Transaction Order - "We put the largest transactions through first" is their story and this benefits us. Bullshit is thick here. The only reason they reorder transactions is to screw their customer and take our funds. There is no better definition of bottom sucking scum than the execs who think that in the long run this isn't going to bite them in the ass.
3) So many overdraft fees and delayed and reordered transactions almost certainly guarantee them a much greater possibility of substantially more overdraft fees, daily over the limit fees, and whatever other fees they make up.

Predatory Fees
We would advise consumers to avoid 5/3 Bank like the Plague! My husband and I were assessed $640 in overdraft fees from 2/24/09 - 3/11/09, which 5/3 removed from our account. Here's the story: admittedly, we weren't keeping as close an eye on our account balance as we should have, since we were out of town. 5/3 assessed a fee between $25 and $37 each time our account was overdrawn (a few times, the account was overdrawn by $2 and 5/3 assessed a $37 fee each time). When we returned from our trip, my husband deposited several hundred dollars into our account to cover the overdraft. Since the exorbitant overdraft fees from 5/3 were unexpected ($330 in one day), he did not take those into account. Thus, when 5/3 removed the fees from our account, THEY CAUSED OUR ACCOUNT TO BE OVERDRAWN AGAIN. My husband deposited more money to cover the overdrafts, and 5/3 continued to assess fees which they would remove from our account, CAUSING THE ACCOUNT TO BE PERPETUALLY OVERDRAWN. Furthermore, we were not notified of the charges for several days, which led to being overdrawn again. My husband considers this LEGALIZED EXTORTION. We have been 5/3 customers since 2000, but are closing ALL of our 5/3 accounts and taking our money to Chase Bank instead.

In my opinion, Fifth Third Bank 'stole' over $1, 000.00 from me. How they did it was to compile over ten transactions that took place over a period of five days and post them all on one day. I am not 100% innocent in this as I did go into negative balance. However, there were only five transactions that occurred while the account was overdrawn. I explained to the bank that I would pay for those five trans., but not for the remaining six as I had money in my account to cover them. They tried to justify their dishonesty by telling me that they were not responsible for when transactions posted (although all trans. were made by debit cards and are taken directly out of the account).

I just can't believe how these corrupt banking officials can twist their policies to fill their own pockets while basically screwing over their customers.

Apparently I am not the first Fifth Third customer who was taken advantage of as I have found over 400 others with similar situations. If we need to file a class action suit against these thieves - count me in. I, for one, will fight these crooks for as long as it takes until I achieve my goals - Honesty and Integrity (not to mention MY money).

LATE FEE RIPOFF
FIFTH THIRD BANK IS A RIPOFF. I REFINANCED WITH THEM IN THE MIDDLOF 2008. I SENT MY PAYMENT IN BY MAIL ON THE FIRST OF THIS MONTH, FEB 2009, AND LAST WEEK I RECEIVED A PHONE CALL AND LETTER STATING THAT THE PAYMENT WAS NOT RECEIVED. I TOLD THEM THAT I MAILED THE PAYMENT AND THEY BLAMED ON THE MAIL SERVICE. OVER THE YEARS, MY PAYMENT HAS NEVER GOT LOST IN THE MAIL WITH ANY OTHER BANK. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND MY PAYMENT BY MAIL. AS INSTRUCTED BY THEM I MADE A SECOND PAYMENT AT A LOCAL FIFTH THIRD BANK, THIS TIME WITH A LATE FEE. THAT PAYMENT WAS POSTED ON THE NEXT DAY. YESTERDAY THEY DEPOSITED THE ORIGINAL CHECK THAT WAS SENT IN THE MAIL BECAUSE I NOTICE THAT MY BANK, WHERE MY CHECKING ACCOUNT RESIDES, HAS RETURNED THE CHECK DUE TO INSUFFICIENT FUNDS. DUE TO THEIR NEGLIGENCE OR WITHOLDING MY MAIL ON PURPOSE, I HAD TO PAY LATE TO THEM AND NOW I HAVE TO PAY A FEE TO MY BANK FOR INSUFFICENT FUNDS BECAUSE THEY TRIED TO GET TWO PAYMENTS FOR THE SAME MONTH OUT OF ME. NEXT MONTH I AM MAKING THE PAYMENT IN PERSON AS I DO NOT TRUST FIFTH THIRD BANK. I AM GETTING OUT OF THIS AS SOON AS I GET THE OPPORTUNITY. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS BANK.

Bad service
I advise anyone considering using Fifth Third Merchant Services for Procesing their credit card charges to reconsider. I handle all the banking/accounting for my non-profit employers. Since 2001 I have used 5/3 for credit card processing, and though I was lured in by promises of no reprogramming fees, no annual fees, no service fee, no statement fees, the reality is since then I have seen all of those and more.

Apparently, in their contract buried somewhere in fine print is a clause which says they have the right to change their fees at anytime, but apparently you don't have the right to cancel it should the fees increase, without yet again accruing another fee! Case in point, last year an annual fee of $45 was taken from my bank account (without my authorization). I was told we received notice in last month's statement that annual fees would start being charged. After speaking to and getting authorization to have the fee waived, two days later they call back and say it's not possible to waive it. Not two months later a $5 per month fee starts being withdrawn as well. When I inquire about it, it's a "monthly dial up fee" so that my terminal can call into the center. (I didn't get any statement message about that one). Within two months we were charged another $40 to "reprogram" the machine--still incurring those monthly dial up fees. I get another letter two months later wanting to "upgrade" the program but will have to pay $50 to do so. Since I had just paid the $40 to do that earlier, I want an explanation of what exactly is being upgraded. No one could tell me. After attempting on five separate occassions to get fees removed (at least partially) I gave up and unplugged the machine, called & wrote to them to cancel and didn't run any charges for a month. (By they way, we own this machine not rent). Yesterday January 2009, I get the bank statements and $55 has been removed for an annual fee by Fifth Third. I cancelled their services in writing in November 2008! Called today, and their response is it is legit because they bill in arrears. Since I used their services at all in 2008 I would have paid it regardless of when I canceled. Then she adds, well at least we didn't charge you the normal cancellation fee. Since I never agreed to any of the fees to begin with, we already spent $200 in un-budgeted "credit card processing fees" (without merchant fees) of hard to come by funds.

If they wanted to keep our business they would have reversed the charges for at least one of the three non-budgeted items as a courtesy. One would think in today's economy keeping customers is important. I was promised in 2007 I would see a new contract which outlined these fees but never received it. Should you be in the market for merchant services, be sure that promises not only be in writing as mine were (in a cover correspondence) but also attached or written on the actual contract, and that it states specific dates that they will be waived. Though I was diligent in following through, in the end their help line is geared to educate you about their fees and services, not really to service the customer. Good luck if you are in the market for credit card processing, and please take the time necessary to calculate all the little fees that will be in play. If you already have low price (as we do), if a charge card is used you might consider passing on fees to your consumers so they will pay by cash or check in the future. Most people don't realize that is costs the merchant money for them to use credit cards. Yes, it's convenient for the buyers, but if it only drives costs up perhaps people will start rethinking how they pay for their purchases.

poor service
I would advise anyone not to do buisness with this bank. I have lost more money than i have ever put in with this bank. One word to sum it up..Sketchy. The bankers are never clear on where you are with your money. ANY chance they can slam you with a fee they will. And good luck tyring to talk it out. This bank is one of the reasons america is the way it is today. Because they will screw you out of money every chance they get. I have only been with them for 7 months and every single time i have dealt with them it has been a compete hassle. I have switched over and already am overly satisifed with the service from Bank of America. For example on problem I had was i racked up my credit card. So like anyone would do i was paying the minimum on it. only to find 5 months later they would set a minimum so low it owuld keep over at least a dollar so all that hard earned money basically paid fee's. Trust me there is no good about this bank stay away.

Fifth Third Bank is not the only bank that is practicing this scam and fradulent activity. In 2008 I have been hit with nsf fees totaling close to $5000.00. I will have money in the account, and it is usually sufficient enough to cover all of the transactions that post to my account, however, the bank will still take out nsf fees on every single transaction that occurred. How is this possible? If there is money in the account it should be treated as if it were a simple debit/credit such as actually balancing a check book. The banks do not use this method. They find every reason to make your account go negative and will only remove one fee per year. Do not be fooled and think they are removing the fee out of the kindness of their hearts.

I work with several people who also bank with 5/3 and they actually closed her checking account because it had been negative for 6 days, and instead of telling her it was closed they allowed her to deposit money into a closed account, and no one can tell her where her deposit went. The banks are set up to keep stealing and stealing from the poor. DO NOT EVER BANK WITH FIFTH THIRD. I am planning to remove my money soon and try my luck with a smaller community bank, at least they wont enjoy robbing me blind.

mortgage late fees
Please do not use fifth third bank!! They are horrible. I have been ripped off by them three times in 8 months and when I confront them with it they do not care and would not direct me to anyone who could help. In this day and age where there is so much competition in banking this company simply does not care about you and will try to get every extra penny out of you in a sneaky way. The day my mortgage payment was due, they called be at 5:05 asking for payment in full and $100 late fee when I checked my bank account they took their payment out that day but for some strage reason their computers did not check this!! This happened twice in 6 months!!! And the best thing about it is they did not care.
