I went to Galaxie Lighting in Salt Lake City to order light fixtures for a retail space. The Galaxie Lighting representative sold me 18 fluorescent light fixtures that were a stock item. I took the Galaxie Lighting Light Fixtures to the jobsite and the electrician informed me that the Galaxie Fixtures did not meet local codes and required a cover plate on the light fixtures.
I returned the light fixtures to Galaxie Lighting at the store at 3663 South Main Street, and the Galaxie Lighting Representative told me that they couldn't just take light fixtures back without charging me a restocking fee. I said okay but what was the fee and after making me wait for almost an hour he told me he would call me with it when he heard back. I told him that a reasonable fee was okay, but that Galaxie had spec'd these lights out, and they were a stock item on hand and he should not be charging a fee.
Two hours later the Galaxie Lighting rep called me and told me that it was my fault I got the wrong fixture and that next time I better be sure before I buy the fixture and that they would charge me a 50% restocking fee or nearly $600. I told him that that fee was at least ten times the normal restocking fees and that I should have just gotten the lights at Home Depot, they might have been wrong there but at least they would have taken them back without trying to rip me off.
He told me that Galaxie Lighting would only refund 50% and to give me the credit card. I told him that I was going to report him to the BBB and this website and he told me that I shouldn't blame Galaxie for getting the wrong fixtures. I asked him if he treated all of his consumers this way, or if I was getting the worst of it. He said he charges all of his contractors even 50% restocking fees, I said I highly doubt that and if he did he wouldn't have any contractors or homeowners shopping at his store much longer if that was the case.
