I am writing because I was a Direct TV customer which I signed up with through AT & T. We were lead to believe that our Phone and Direct TV bill would be $100.00 but we later found out it was two separate bills which was more than stated by the representative. Also, their charges for each box that was not clearly explained during sign up. We decide to stay with them for the duration of our contract.
Near the end of our contract the TVs stopped working correctly. They said it would be an $80.00 charge to come out we told them that's alright we will wait and switch to another company. All the TV went out except one, we call them again and they decided to waive the service fee. This was in October a few days before our contract was ending. We made a big mistake in letting them come into our home. The technician was able to make all the TV work except for one. He said the problem was on the outside of the house was bad. He changed it out. No one said anything about a new contract starting if you change it out. We thought all was well.
We called them a couple weeks later to cancel our contract and they told us we began a new contract because the technician changes out a part. We made several calls and was hung up on or left on hold many times. I talked to several supervisors and my calls were dropped or I they hung up the phone. One supervisor said she would send the boxes for us to return the equipment and cancel the contract. We did that thinking everything was over.
A week or two later a charge for $411.00 was removed from our checking account. We were not told about the charge neither did we authorize them to take it from our account. I called to find out why. They said we cancelled our contract. This was a contract that they tricked us into. This is when I realized why they waived the fee for service. So, they could start another contract because they were aware we were leaving their company. The supervisor claims that they could not waive the cancellation fee. I said your technician could have had the courtesy as many other companies do to tell us that a new contract would start. "He said it was in my contract” that money can be removed from my account (checking or credit card). I went through AT &T andwe did not receive a contract from them.
So, I called back and asked for a copy of my contract with our signature on it, they said they could see me a new one and request that I get a copy but it is for their records. I am waiting to see if I get a signed copy of a contract.
I will be telling everyone I meet not to do business with Direct TV. Do not do business with Direct TV. There should be someone out there willing to help us with this situation.
