We purchased a solar powered latern at Gary Daniel's Lawn and Garden on May 30, 2010. We were told that it would glow for about 4 hours after receiving sunlight for about 4 hours. The first few days it produced about an hour of light after 8-10 hours in the sun. Good enough, I guess. It did this for a few days, then stopped working entirely. I called to arrange a return and spoke to Mr. Daniels. Unfortunately, we had lost track of the receipt. That's our tough luck, he said; how did he know we hadn't bought it somewhere else? This is not too hard: (1) he had waited on us personally; (2) how in the world would we know he carried this item if we hadn't bought it there?; (3) we have a credit card receipt for that date and for the exact amount of the lantern; (4) did he really imagine we were scouring the country trying to cheat someone out of $40? I said we wouldn't be shopping at his business again. I was clearly unhappy, but I was also civil and polite. His response, verbatim: "Good. We don't want you shopping at our business." Touching, isn't it? And this is my main complaint. He's welcome to have whatever return policy he likes, but his tone was arrogant and snotty right out of the gate. He had been unusually pleasant when he had waited on us that day in his store. His tone was rather different on the phone today.
