Geek Squad Reviews

Avoid using them at all costs
Like lots of people I don't think about needing a computer repair service until something goes wrong. When something eventually went wrong, it happened to be a virus (or malware?) Basically computer VD. My laptop was infected and I kept receiving pop ups that promised to enhance my manliness and win the hearts of every woman with a pulse. With self-convincing male bravado I decided that I did not need these types of offers and started looking for a Computer Repair Doctor that had the right antidote to cure my highly embarrassed machine. I took it to Geek Squad and from the moment I dropped it off I had somewhat of a bad feeling. The 17 year old kid that took it looked like he was more concerned with brushing away the hair from his face than to actually writing down my PCs symptoms. He then said, "it would be like a week before you can pick it up." To which I replied, "Aight dude", trying to speak his prepubescent lingo for maximum detail retention. When a week passes I head into the Geek Squad to pick up my machine when I find out it hasn't even been started on. After speaking with two managers, I decided it was in my ailing machine (and my interest) to not waste anymore of my time with this place and take my computer home. I called around to some local shops and everyone wanted an arm and a leg to repair it, including charging diagnosis fees (which from my research are included most of time.) I ended up Googling and found an online repair company called Secure Remote Support. I called, asked about rates of charge and how long it would take. I was sold a Virus, Spyware, and Malware Removal Package for $79 and $25 for an Optimization Service (some promo they were offering.) He then connected to my computer through the internet and within 45 minutes my computer was cleaned out and sped up. I didn't have to unplug anything, take it anywhere and I was able to watch my DVR's episodes of American Idol while it all took place. How convenient is that? I would have to say to anyone who is thinking about taking their computer to Geek Squad for any reason should visit secureremotesupport [DOT] com first before you waste your time elsewhere.

Rudeness
Two years ago my father bought me a brand new HP Touchsmart for Christmas. I dunno how familiar you are with this but they're not cheap. As a precaution, he bought me a Geek Squad plan to cover it. I never planned on using it because, well, I always heard the Geek Squad horror stories. Well... I started having problems after a year.

I took my computer in and after waiting a half hour to be handled (mind you, NO ONE said a word to me, not even a "it'll be just a second"), I was told the computer would be tested and sent to a repair facility and I wiuld get it back in...THREE WEEKS! I was pissed...to say the least.

They send it back...replaced the hard drive and I lost EVERYTHING. They didn't bother to reinstall Windows for me and when I brought in my WIndows disc, it turns out the CD-ROM was damaged too.

If you look on the diagnositics sheet they give you, you'll see "testing DVD drive" is right on there...obviously they didn't do ANY tests.

So, now I have a computer but can't reinstall anything. The manager came out and had the audacity to limp her way over to me and say, "Buy a keyboard and fix it yourself." YES, you heard that right... "DO IT YOURSELF." My father paid $250 for a service plan so this rude woman could tell me to "do it yourself?"

I called a different computer repair place in Lansing (digitalctrl, they're awesome, look 'em up). They told me that the DVD-ROM drive had failed (and honestly, I'm not sure on what that means) and that I could install Windows with a USB drive (again, I had no clue what this was...I just told the tech to do it for me). He did...and now my computer, other than the DVD-ROM, works PERFECT.

NEVER GO TO BEST BUY FOR YOUR COMPUTER NEEDS. FIND AN ALTERNATIVE!! (and if you're in Lansing, there's tons of great Geek Squad alternatives like digitalctrl and Vertex).

Should not be in business
Today I called geek squad for the first time, to see if it was worth renewing..

I was very dissappointed.

I described a simple problem relating to file associations. Powerpoint was not associated with .ppt. and clicking on a powerpoint file did not open powerpoint.

First she directed me to control panel and told me to click on add/remove programs.
There is no add remove programs in windows 7. So I found it my self.
She had me uninstall an older version of powerpoint...useless waiste of time.

I told her I thought the problem could be solved by going to "default programs" and using "associate files."
She told me that Geek squad couldnt help with individual programs.

I asked her if I could speak to a supervisor. she said there was none available.
I asked if one would call me back and gave her my phone number.

She said they would when they got out of a meeting... I guess they never got out of a meeting.

Geek squad is the biggest waiste of money in the world. I went to Google and found the answer to the problem myself. I am definately not renewing.

Waste of time and money
Dont buy anything from geek squad . Every time something breaks the geek squad store tech can never fix it and everything must be shipped out for repair which takes two weeks or more to come back. They even tried to charge me $100.00 for data back up. What a joke. All they do is copy and paste your data onto a disk or flash drive. My advice is to Google search any problem you have instead of taking it to geek squad.

Rip off
Brought my laptop to Geek Squad in Best Buy, Paramus, NJ. Told them I was getting the blue screen problem and I needed them to fix. They informed me of their $199. repair fee that would not only cover this, but extend for an entire year to cover problems. I asked what would happen if they could not fix the laptop and was told "you would get a refund". After a week with no call; I called Geek Squad and was told "they could not fix it, so I need to bring the recovery disks in and they would do a restore". I told them I could do a restore with recovery disks (by calling the manuf. support), and so I would just pick the laptop up. I wanted to confirm how I would get my refund since they "couldn't fix it". I was told I could pick my laptop up, but I wasn't getting any money back. I reminded them A. they told me initially that if they could not fix the problem, I would get a refund; and B. they just told me they could not fix the problem. I spoke with the manager who insisted they spent a huge amount of time determining they could not fix the problem; I reminded him that I asked that specific question when I left the laptop; he said they did fix it, they decided it needed a restore. Bad lesson to learn; total ripoff.

No Service or Help
GEEK SQUAD is a very bad company to deal with, I took out insurance for my iphone, it went missing from the doorstep even before I received, this was over 2 months ago, called GEEK SQUAD for help; was put through several lengthy phone conversation, then lengthy police report followed, as they required one, week or so later called again, still 2 more long phone interviews, 2 months later, , , Nothing, was put through more stress than the actual phones worth.. just called and cancelled the policy. The customer service representatives are really abrupt and sometimes really rude, this is with the claims, but all sweet when setting up the policy to take your money for their commission; suppose they are trained in that way, to be rude when its payout time. Advice to all: KEEP AWAY!!!

Bad experience
When my girlfriend decided to break up with me I didn't expect for my PC to take the brunt of that relationships demise. I found it partially embedded in the front yard along with my clothes, "my now in more pieces" record collection, "special" pictures of us, my 2 month old laptop, and MY DOG! I loaded up my belongings and found new accommodations. When I finally settled in after a few weeks I decided to fire up the computer and see what damage had been caused. It unfortunately would not load into Windows. It started and got to the welcome screen but would then freeze and got stuck and then restart after awhile. I took it Geek Squad and had them diagnose the problem. In a few days I got a call stating that I needed a new hard drive, to have the Windows operating system reinstalled (+all my programs) and if I wanted any of my old photos, files and music, I would need also to purchase a data recovery service. He then told me what it would cost $650 total to be solvent again. Being a little skeptical at this point, especially because I had just bought the computer for $850 less than two months ago I did a little research on Geek Squad .After finding numerous reviews, with pretty much the same ending, I concluded that it was too expensive to have inexperienced, and overpriced high school students fix my 'new' computer. I picked up my machine and went in search of an alternative. My new roommate then told me about a company called Secure Remote Support. They had been used to help out in his office when a bunch of computers had got virus' and infections. I looked them up on his computer and called them. I told them the problems and they said before committing to purchase their overpriced services to take advantage of their free diagnosis. I decided that sounded logical so I proceeded with the diagnosis. In 25 minutes I was told that the hard drive didn't need replacing; the computer just needed to be cleaned and configured properly. And the Windows Operating System would not need to be reinstalled! He did recommend allowing them to perform a Spyware/Malware Sweep as well as an optimization service to speed it up to its full potential. I agreed to have them do it and within 45 minutes it was back in my hands and I was back on the internet. For the entire service it only cost me $104.99 and I even got a "No Fix No Pay" guarantee with it. It's definitely getting far more for far less than the Geek Squad.

Customer Service Through Fear
The Geeks at Geek Squad have been trained well. They get you to buy additional unnessaary services through fear. They take complete advantage of regular people who don't know a great deal about computers. I took my laptop into a GS location after I had discovered it had been infected with the so called 2011 internet virus. I asked them if they could please remove the virus from my computer. They said they couldn't do that service alone, that they needed to do a complete "diagnostic" on the hard drive. "Why?" was unclear, but if I didn't do it, they couldn't remove the virus. So I reluctantly agreed to the almost $300 service and left my laptop. They then called me and told me -"Wow, looks like your hard drive is toast. We don't want to do anything else to it. We "strongly suggest" (nice CYA language I'm sure was suggested from legal) to get a new hard drive and bring in your OS, and by the way, looks like you don't want us to back up your data-(I had signed something that said not to) are you sure about that? Here's what can happen..." So I then reluctantly agreed to back up the data-another $99! I bought a hard drive, $79 brought in the OS $30 (I had to order it from the manufacturer. It had to be backordered and many, many problems with SONY getting those discs) and said - please get this done...everyday I'm out my laptop, I can't do business!! It had already been 3 WEEKS..They said it would be ready the afternoon of the following day. When I called in..they were still in process of doing the work but that it would be ready that evening. Well, waited till the next day and just went in...it still wasn't ready. Why? "We couldn't transfer the data. Your data is lost forever because your hard drive is so bad. (i'm thinking why didn't you guys call me) You can take it to another location where they have 'special equipment' (another person who complained about the same problem on this site, said something about how they said a "white room with white coats" and that's exactly what they made it sound like) and they can do it for you for about $1, 500!!! How badly do you need your data?" I thanked them kindly and said no to the off site $1, 500 suggestion. Took my computer which was essentially a new hard drive with nothing on it but a Windows 7 OS. So they essentially charged me $300 to install a hard drive, and do a download. So I still needed my docs so I took it to an IT friend. He looked at it for about 1/2 hour and said my hard drive was fine, and we can take the virus - and other spyware - off for you. Your hard drive will be fine. And so far-it has. So I have my old hard drive and all my docs, but still stuck with $300 charge from GS. I wanted my money back. They gave me the money back for the data transfer $99 that they could not do but would not return my $300. Said that their counter Geeks would NEVER have said that I needed to buy a new hard drive-that was MY decision. The diagnostic test was necessary. When they do the diagnostic they look for every little thing that MIGHT happen to your hard drive and "consult" you about it. That my hard drive failure was "imminent"-another nice word no doubt suggested by the legal dept.. Well, isn't that so with just about any computer? It's going to go bad at some point...? This "diagnostic test" that they get you to sign up for is a tool for them to try to make money. To find out any little thing that MAY go wrong and get you to purchase unnecessary services and equipment. And if you don't take their scare tactic suggestions? Well, dont blame us if it blows up! Nice job trainers and lawyers. If someone would have said, "you know, your old drive isn't that bad...you can still use it." I would have done just that! Ask me to sign a hold harmless or something-Best Buy Geek Squad guys! I just needed the thing back to get back to business! My IT guy was able to take off the viruses and not screw it up. But they would not make a suggestion like that because, they are so afraid that someone is going to sue them for losing all the data, or messing up your computer in some way, which is ironic because that is exactly what they did. I remember picking it up and distinctly asking them if there was any way to retrieve any of the data. They said NO, that the drive was so bad it wasn't possible. This was in fact, a lie. They make you sign a number of different things when you bring it in and by then you are so confused and desperate, you'll say yes to just about anything...Let the buyer beware...And again, nice job training and legal departments! Hope you are saving money because with the number of people who've had bad experiences who will no doubt tell everyone they know to NOT TAKE YOUR COMPUTER TO GEEK SQUAD TO FIX ANY COMPUTER PROBLEMS-you can't be gaining any happy, new customers.

Direct debits
Hi.
Why? You've cancelled your account over seven months ago with the geek squad & they still take money out.
We cancelled because, when we rang with a problem to do with the dongle. They told us to go outside to find a better signal." Great it was february and snowing." We tried to communitcate with the bloke, but was just not getting though to him, so we hung up. The next day we took the computer into repair shop, to be told that my Wi-Fi settings wasn't set right. We've since cancelled the contract with geek squad by phone, but still to this day have had nothing from them. Until yesterday, with an update on our account, that is still active. Now you would think after it was all cancelled everything would be fine. But no, they have still been taking money out of our account ever since.
Any ideas on how to get our money back of this lot would be greatfully received.
