About 3 weeks ago I went into Gerrard's Market in Redlands, California and wanted to purchase some frozen vegetables. I went to the Frozen foods freezer and picked several bags of vegetables and found that all of them were either completely soft, or had significant soft, unfrozen portions. I did not purchase any. The store clerk told me at that them that they knew about it..."sorry". I asked that it be corrected since I want to buy foods advertised as frozen, to be frozen and not in a state of melting or thawing all of the time.
Tonight, 3 weeks later, September 27, 2009, I went to the frozen foods secftion of GERRARD'S MARKET to buy some frozen vegetables and found that they were even softer than before. I went to several shelves and the upper most shelf had a bag of food that should have been frozen that was so soft that I wouldn't doubt that it was in a state of decay.
When I asked to speak to the manager, a young blond lady, said she was the manager. When I explained to her that the vegetables in the frozen foods section were NOT FROZEN, she stated that "we know about that, but at least it's cold." "There's nothing that we can do about it." "She suggested that if I wanted to buy frozen foods, that from now on I should "shop elsewhere." When I stated to her that I felt that food that was advertised as frozen should be sold frozen, not soft and gooey. She then suggested that I help her empty out the entire freezer "if you want too." She reiterated that there was nothing that could be done.
Food that is once frozen and is allowed to thaw, has less food value, less viable vitamins, and is more prone to spoilage, more prone to flavor degeneration that foods that are kept frozen. I will be contacting the State Health Department to notify them opf the deficiency and poor attitude toward their customers as shown by the store manager. In the mean time I suggest that everyone buy their frozen food and perhaps other foods elsewhere.
