Gold's Gym Reviews

Donnie June 2, 2009
scam
They had a drawing for a year's membership, not a chance to win a year's membership. I slipped in a tab with my # on it & it was drawn, but they didn't tell me I already had to be a member to win the free year (until I went to one of their gyms).
Once there that was it. They pressured and talked me into signing a 2-year contract.
I tried to tell them I didn't have a job & was tryin to move, but they kept waving all their goods in front me then that was it, they didn't even care.
Then I had to stay with someone 30 miles away from the area I was staying in and get a utility bill so I could break the contract and stop the withdrawls.
Be forewarned friend. Stay away form these power-hungry leeches that call themselves GOLD'S GYM. They WILL take you for EVERYTHING they can. They didn't even talk about no termination procedures or enything-THAT'S WHAT GOT ME! There wasn't even anything about suspending one's contract. Steer clear of gold's gym.

Terrible customer service
I acquired a membership with Gold's that I had to give up when I was moving from Edmonton to Ottawa. I was never able to use this membership during the time that I lived in Edmonton as the start date for the gym opening was delayed. They told me, when I was considering signing up that it would be open in late September. Once I was signed up, it was a different story. Given that there is no location for this Company in Ottawa, I was required to either pay $200 to terminate or transfer to another person. I made the arrangements to transfer to another person, and this Company told me that everything was a go. I find that I am still being billed for my membership four months later. The location I have my membership with, as well as the regional office in Calgary, have both refused to return my calls. I will never consider another membership with Gold's. I have paid almost two hundred dollars thus far and was never able to use the membership. My suggestion to anyone considering a membership with them is to check the Better Business Bureau complaint history, and review web postings about the company. I think you will find strikingly similar anecdotes.

Fraud and cheating
I signed up for a membership, soon after realized it was costing too much so I tried to cancel it, they were rude, would not let me cancel my membership, they don't even give you any options. You're trapped to pay this membership forever. They are total rip offs, very rude, stay away from them. Find a different gym, one that offers month to month with nicer customer service.

Unethical business practices
Gold's Gym must have an affiliation with a crime syndicate. I signed up with Gold's more than a year ago. When I initially joined the club I had signed a twelve month contract. In order to join I had to pay an enrollment fee in addition to first and last month dues up front. After my twelve months were completed I noticed that my checking account wasn't drafted any longer for dues so I figured that my obligation was complete. Four months after my twelve month contract was completed, I receive in the mail a collection agency letter indicating that I owe them $80.52. I stopped working out in the club about a month prior to what I thought was my last payment. After reading some of the complaints on this forum, I wished that I had visited here before I ever attempted to join Gold's Gym. SO FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE CONSIDERING JOINING GOLD'S GYM, DON'T. THEY ARE A BUNCH OF CROOKS!

Never cancelled membership!
Signed up for membership in 2003. Moved a couple months later to a city that didn' t have a Golds anywhere near it. I was told to fax proof that the nearest gym was over 30 miles away and they would let me cancel my membership that was being charged to my credit card. I did fax proof and they told me my memb. was cancelled after being so rude. My card was not being charged any longer. THEN... 3 years later I got a collection notice for back payment of $400 and on my credit report! I still have the same credit card used then and they never tried to charge it or send any letter notifying me of any wrong doing! They did this to a friend of mine as well. Horrible company!!! I'm with 24 hr. and have not had any problems.

Fraud and scam
I am appalled with the service I have received from Gold's. Our contract had expired and yet they still were charging us when we weren't even using the gym anymore. When I inquired about the charges I was told you had to give 30 days notice. This is on ONE of the contracts we signed, yet absent on another part of the contract. AND the amount we were paying INCREASED and no where on our contracts was this new price included.

My advice to people looking to join a gym is to forget about Gold's. They will entice you with all their equipment but we found it was always busy, and in general, not worth what they charge you. And what's more, they will charge you even though your contract has expired.

Crap-Quality Employees
I worked for my brother-in-law's company and a man came in and wanted to talk to me about a gym membership. I had been interested in getting one but I knew that I didn't have the motivation to follow through... I was lazy! There, I said it!

Anyways, he assurred me that for being a new member, he can arrange for me to have a "personal trainer" and that person would be him. I thought, "Okay, this sounds great." Because I was a college student, I could also get a 12-month membership instead of the normal 24-month one and as an added bonus, as long as I remained a student, I could cancel at anytime with no termination fees applied. This was perfect for me. So as I was signing, I noticed that the term on the membership was 24-months. I asked him about it and he said, "Oh, don't worry about that... I have to put that to get the paperwork rolling." So, like a fool, I sign. After the 2nd session with the trainer, my legs and arms were killing me. I couldn't lift my arms and the pain in my legs shot from the bottom of my butt to the base of my heel. I literally had to walk on my tip-toes with my knees bent because of the outrageoulsy pulled muscles down the back of both of my legs. I went back to the gym 8 days later (it took that long to recover) and my trainer said that was normal! I was THAT out of shape. After my 5th session, my trainer wasn't there and I was told that I wasn't supposed to have a trainer after the 3rd session. If I wanted one, I had to pay for one. My trainer was fired, by the way, for a reason I later found out. I went back here and there for the next several months then found out I was pregnant. I decided to cancel my membership. SORRY! Can't do that because I signed a 24-month contract! The man telling me this was so nice. When I explained what I was told, he said that the trainer was fired for lying to customers to get them to sign contracts and also for making sexual remarks to some of the female clients. The guy helping me said he'd see what he could do. So a few more months go by and I'm fed up with calls not being returned and being turned away because the "person to speak to isn't here" so I stopped the payment from coming out of my checking account. THAT was the point when they finally wanted to talk to me! They didn't give a crap about me when I was giving them my money, but now they can't get enough of me! So I went in AGAIN to speak to a manager (the nice genleman from before no longer worked there... go figure) I spoke with a manager and I was told that I signed the contract and there was nothing I could do about it. When I asked to speak with the owner of that franchise, I was told that there was no reason for me to speak with him and that he would not put me in touch with him. I called the next day and asked the girl who answered the phone who the owner of the franchise was and she gave me the husband and wife's name and was just about to give me a number when she paused, put me on hold, then returned and asked who I was. I told her who I was and immediately, the rude man from before jumped on the phone and chewed me out. He said, again, that I signed a contract and I'm legally responsible to pay for what I agreed to. The name and number of the owner was none of my business and he then hung up on me. You can imagine the wrath I was feeling at the time. So I later gave birth and forgot about the whole GOLDS GYM experience...

Until I got a letter in the mail from a collection attorney saying pay or go to court. I paid more than $600 to get Gold's Gym out of my life. I know it's a big place, they have lots of clients, lots of money coming in... but I tell my story to anyone who mentions "gym" to me. It's been a while since then, but it still pisses me off the same.

Gold's Gym Fort Lauderdale
I was a member of Gold's Gym in Fort Lauderdale, but once my membership was up I joined Mainstreet Gym in Wilton Manors. Mainstreet closed overnight, with NO prior notice. I choose Mainstreet because it was within walking distance of my home; I got exercise and was saving gas. I didn't even hear that Mainstreet had closed until a friend who also was a member informed me. Only a few weeks ago, I looked in my bank account and saw there charges from Golds Gym. I can't get satisfaction from the gym manager or franchise owner...even the corporate office. What do we do????????????????
