My husband contacted Golden Rule at the beginning of April 2010 to get coverage for himself and our unborn son. He asked the individual helping him which plan would be best for his unborn son and himself. The gentleman helped him find a plan that would work, but told him that they could not cover an unborn child and to contact him as soon as our son was home from the hospital.
We are not receiving statements stating that Golden Rule will not cover my son's doctor and hospital bills because he was not covered when he was in the hospital. They are saying that he would have needed to be covered before he was born. We TRIED to get him covered before he was born and said we couldn't do it. The website also doesn't allow a free quote on an unborn child. My husband actually had to wait to start his insurance because we wanted to start him and my son at the same time. If we weren't trying to cover our unborn son, my husband would have started his insurance at the beginning of April when he first called. We tried to be proactive, and we got screwed.
However, after going through everything stated above, Golden Rule then stated that they would not have been able to cover us until he was born because they wanted to make sure he didn't have any problems. My question is how in the heck is a newborn supposed to be covered in the hospital with all of this contradicting information. Thankfully he was healthy, but what if he wasn't? According to Golden Rule, he wouldn't have insurance and could have racked up thousands of dollars. We will still owe thousands which we were not anticipating, and will be taking Golden Rule to court if this does not turn out in our favor. They are telling us they will get back with us in ten days to review everything. In the meantime, we just have to sit and wait at the mercy of an insurance company who's advice to us is now screwing us.
We do not need insurance when we are healthy, so why will insurance not cover us when we need it most! I wouldn't pay an arm and a leg for insurance if I just wanted it around when I was healthy - it is for when you are sick! I have my own insurance with my employer, but my family thought it made more sense to put my uninsured husband on with my unborn son since it was more cost effective. However, if I would have known they were going to do this, I could have added my son to my insurance up to 30 days after he was born and he would have been covered. However, Golden Rule decided to wait 55 days after my son was born to stir everything up so now it is too late for me to even get him on my plan. Not only do I not recommend this company to anyone, but they will be dealing with legal issues when this is all said and done.
