On October 2, 2009, I went into Kmart in order to pick up a few items for my 4 year old daughter; when I can across a sale sign for nighttime underpants. The regular price was $17.59 each, so when I saw the sale sign advertising them for $9.99 along with a coupon for $2.00 when purchasing 2 packs, I thought what an excellent sale. So I decided to purchase four packs. After I finished shopping I went to the cashier to have her ring up my items. To my surprise, it rang up the regular price. I told the cashier that there is a sale sign directly beneath the product, discribing the product on sale. She referred to her circular and stated that was not the product. I told her that the sign specifically describe Goodnites underpants and that I could show it to her. After bringing the sign to her for her to examine, she called for a customer service representative. The Rep. yelled back to her saying that there was nothing she could do and her to call the manager.
Well that when the manager finally got there, I explained to him that I was trying to purchase a item that was advertised for $9.99. He said that it was a mistake and that I could not get it for that price. I said that it was the law in NYS to honor the coupon at the advertised price. He told me that he would give me one, and no more and that he was doing ME a FAVOR for allowing me to purchase one pack at this price but that there was no way he was going to let me walk out the store with the other three packs for that price. When I ask for the number to the cooperate office he pointed to customer service and told me to go there and get the number
Where he pointed there was a giant sign that read "CUSTOMER RULES" and abrutly walked away. What a laugh. I was never so embarrased. By that time I demanded to speak with the Store Manager Tara Muro, who quickly defused the situation and app0logized for her subbordinate Mike behavior. She stated that she would talk to him about his rudeness. During this time of recession, retailers do not have the luxury of hiring airheads like their manager Mike. If it wasn't for Ms. Muro and her customer service skills I would have never walked into K-mart again, especially when Walmart is so much cheaper. A little kindness could go along way, especially when the store is in error.
