Admissions Counselor
I submitted my enrollment information for Grand Canyon University's (GCU) Masters in Leadership program on November 28, 2009. I attended the school approximately two years before, but withdrew to take a break. Since I am now ready to start again, I was expecting the same quality service I received the first time around. Boy, was I wrong!
Since I hadn't heard anything from GCU, I called on December 16, 2009 to find out my enrollment status. The operator who answered asked what I needed, I let him know I hadn't heard anything about my enrollment and it had been three weeks, and he says, "So, do you need your academic counselor or your financial aid counselor?" I answered academic and questioned if it would be the same academic counselor I had previously. It wasn't, but he told me my new counselors name was Shannon and he would transfer me. I got the "voicemail before the voicemail" saying that she wasn't available, that if I would like to leave a message, stay on the line or if I would like to speak to another advisor to press "2." I pressed "2" since I'm suppose to start school in three weeks and would really like to get this taken care of. Well, that was a mistake. I was on hold for OVER 15 MINUTES waiting to speak with someone. I finally had to hang up and decided I would call back at a later time that day.
The second call that day, I decided I would leave my counselor a message thinking I would hear back quickly. Here is what her voicemail recording states: Hi, you've reached Shannon, Academic Counselor for Grand Canyon University. Today is December 15th ("Uh, no, it's the 16th, " I'm thinking) and I am out of the office. I do not know when I will return. Please leave a message and I will return your call at a later date." Okay. So, I started thinking that maybe something happened to someone in her family and she had to leave right away. I typically give people the benefit of the doubt and figured it must have been a rush situation. So, I did not leave a message and decided again to call and see if I could get a hold of another counselor. This time, I waited 10 minutes before I hung up.
Now, here we are, December 21st. I checked the GCU site to see the status of my enrollment. It says "Pending - a counselor will contact you shortly." I doubt that. So, I just called again, got an operator who I told my story to and then her response? "Hold on." She transferred me to THE SAME counselors voicemail! So, I press "2" again, ready to wait an insane amount of time to speak to someone and what happens? Here's what I heard, "We are currently experiencing technical difficulties and can not transfer to a different counselor. Please call back and leave a message with your counselor."
I think I'll start looking at other schools now.

Finacial Aid/Grades Ripoff
In March 2009 less than one week into my class Angel, the portion students use to do their homework, was infected with a virus. I was the first person to discover the virus. I alerted GCU's tech dept. They kept telling me they fixed it but Norton kept saying it was unsafe. Needless to say my computer crashed and I was unable to attend classes. Now my class I was taking was Psych 101, the next class I was scheduled to take was Psych 315. You can't take the 2nd class without first passing the Psych 101. My counselors were aware of this situation, I couldn't even log into Angel on my computer, Norton would not allow it the site was considered unsafe. I did however email people to tell them and ask them what was happening. Needless to say they charged me for two classes I could not take because their school was infected with a computer virus that destroyed my computer and they had the nerve to give me an F, well two F's actually for classes I was never allowed into in the first place. I have been trying for months to get my money back and have these F's removed. Sounds like a simple thing to fix, don't you think? You reimburse my account the money you took and you remove the grades. Shouldn't be difficult. Since this happened I have been through about 5 counselors each one promising they would fix this but nobody does and if it appears that they are actually trying, bam, I get switched to someone else. I had a 4.0 grade point average. I am financing this with what little grant money I get and by student loans. I am a 47 year old grandmother. I was so excited to go back to school and they have destroyed everything. This year I was actually allowed almost $5000 for a Pell grant. I received $3500, where did the rest of my money go? Also where is the FSEOG grant money I got last year? It's nowhere to be seen. I need six surgeries and cannot get them until I can buy a laptop and I can't buy a laptop because they stole half my grant money to pay for classes I was locked out of and one I couldnt take because I had not been able to take the prerequisite course that was required before hand. All because I had a lazy academic counselor who did not do his job. The only person in that entire college who has tried to help me is Krisopher Jordan my enrollment counselor. He knows th truth and he has done all he can but the financial aid people, they are a joke. I just get passed to person to person to person each one claiming this is the first that they have heard of it. I don't know who to contact to file a formal complaint against them and it is looking as if I am going to have to sue this college to get my money back and to get those F's off my record. I can't even transfer out because they took all my money and I can't have those F's follow me around. Am I wrong here people to be upset? Am I wrong to consider suing them for what they have done? I am not a healthy person. The stress that this has put on my and on my heart has caused my doctor to tell me to quit this school because it is making me sicker. I have a severely weakened immune system do to all that is wrong with me. The arteries in both legs are plugged so bad there is not blood going to my feet. I need total knee replacement surger on both knees which I can't have till I have the arteries fixed, I need to have a heart catheritization as well for the blockage there, I need back surgery, I need neck surgery and I need carpal tunnel surgery, which is the most minor thing wrong with me. What kind of religious school who teaches about the bible and Jesus Christ would treat a sick 47 year old grandmother like this? I am ashamed to admit this but I got so upset one night over all that is going on with this school that I tried to commit suicide. I just couldn't take it anymore. They had driven me to the edge and pushed me over. I am losing my faith in God, I have definitely lost my faith in GCU and even though finishing school and getting my degree is all I ever wanted and is my greatest dream I am ready to just quit and walk away. Are all online school's this dishonest or is it just GCU who can hid behind religion? Please if anyone knows who to contact or who can help, please give me the info. I was majoring in Psychology. My plan was to get my degree in Psychology and then get a dual degree in teaching. I switched to the Education division to take advantage of the teach grant but guess what, because of the F's, I don't qualify for that. I am a straight A student who works harder than anyone I know because I haven't been in school for a long time. This school has destroyed my life, my faith, my hopes and my dreams. If anyone can help me, please let me know.<br />
You can email me at [email protected]. I really need some help here, I am begging for anyone who is listening to please help me. Also if you are considering GCU, don't trust them. Obviously from these posts I am not the only person they have totally screwed over. At least one of you got some names. They refuse to give me any names at all. I get nothing and now they won't even answer my emails. There is nothing Christian about this place other than all the Bible classes they make you take. Perhaps they should read a few themselves.

Financial Aid
I can certainly relate to difficulties with Grand Canyon University Financial Aid. My "Finance Counselor" Melissa Penny told me that my disbursement refund would be sent to me by the 14th of July. Then all of a sudden, there is this code on my account for the student loans. Well she claims it held up the Pell Grant too. The student loans had already been applied to my account. I never even got a notice that the funds would be late and I was depending on them as a single parent returning to school. My son is disabled, and I could not complete my Bachelors Degree in the past. So, I thought I'd do so at Grand Canyon. Three FAFSA Representatives advised me that there was no reason why my disbursement would not be posted and available for my use. But this Melissa Penny claimed that "they" will be reviewing my account soon. She never told me who "they" were. In fact she acted as if she were disinterested. I was lucky when she even answered me at all. And her boss, Chris Nicholson (F.A. Admin. at GCU) was worse. He flat out lied to me. He said he had personally mailed the disbursement refund to me, then she came back days later and said it was mailed at another time. It's ridiculous. He was very rude to me and acted as if I were bothering him. I tell you--I wish I had not chosen this school. I honestly feel that they are stealing grant and loan money or mismanaging it. I applied for the Teach Grant and they won't even tell me if it is being processed or not.
They sicken me and I wish I knew who at the US Dept. of Education to report them to. I am currently reviewing other schools to switch to.

Total rip off
I wanted to further my education online and was told about Grand Canyon University or is known as GCU. I was told about this college and how good a Christian college it is.
I have been attending since 10/28/07, and purchasing my books with what they call a lopes card. 1. I was told my lopes account rolls over each semester in which I can buy more books from the bookstore. I only bought the book(s) I needed each semester. When I went online to purchase my next book they said I owed them more money for the book because my lopes account was depleted. A light should have gone off then.
2. Three times a year I receive a reimbursement check because I applied for federal grants and signed a promissory note to subsidize my tuition, which with all three of those combined they use my loan money-cost of tuition= credit and a reimbursement check. I was suppose to get my check this month which is March. The financial counselor never returned my calls. I did email her and somebody emailed me back stating I will not receive a reimbursement check because they applied it to the summer balance. The summer is when their new year starts and it hasn't started when all this occurred.
A friend of mine that goes to that college also was on the phone with her admission counselor and she emailed me that he told her the financial counselor weren't there all day which was 03/26/09.
I called the financial institution who I had the promissory note through and explained exactly what happened and told her if I don't finish my degree then I can't pay my promissory note. She assured me she would call and find out what happend. She knew the financial counselor's last name. Hmmm. The so called instructors are not called instructors, they are called facilitators, which there is a difference. When you need help in the tech support, everything is automated and they direct you to their website to try and troubleshoot your problem.
Now I would like to fly out there to see if there is a real college that exists even though they have a physical address.
If your wanting to return to college anybody can get federal money or loans to attend college. I recommend to everybody to college in your home down our your state college.
I have read previous post. The college stating you will be turned over to a collection agency is ridiculous if you have already allotted them money for your tuitition. In my personal opinion. They owe the money back to the federal government and to the financial institution if you took out a promissory note like I did.

Financial Aid/President of GCU
I am sending forth this complaint about GCU (Grand Canyon University) which is supposed to be a Christian college. I had been wanting to attend school at GCU since Dec. 2007. I submitted the paperwork and did my financial aid papers. I waited and waited for the financial aid department to contact me; and they never did. So I became suspscious after redoing my financial aid online.
After I had seen that GCU had my financial aid papers for months, I called them to see what was going on. A representative name Tom had gotten really rude with me. He stated it was my responisibility to contact them about the financial aid. Now I'm a new student; not a repeat student. This had been five months by that time; and I realized I could've started at GCU since May 2008.
I kept calling and calling and kept speaking with Tom who had refused to allow me to speak with the head financial aid in this case was/is Tim Fisher. After speaking with two other representatives, I was told to send an email of my complaint. I had sent several complaints. Mr Fischer I spoke with on the telephone; had told me that if I wanted to attend GCU and he apologized to call him directly. Well this ended being a lie. I had several more issues/problems to arise with the financial aid department, and I called Mr. Fischer and sent him numerous emails and no call back or response.
I tried to contact Mr. Eagan and ended up speaking with Tom and Valerie who are representatives of GCU; and began the process all over again. After getting an email address and direct number for Mr. Eagan who is the manager of GCU; then again no response at all. Neither Mr. Eagan, Mr. Fischer bothered to contact me. So December 2008, I wrote to the president of GCU whose name is Dr. Kathy Player, and she never bothered to respond back to my letter. After approximately a month & a half, I received a letter from Mr. Fischer stating he wanted to do a conference call. So what Dr. Kathy Player did was passed my letter back to the one who lied and I had the problem/issue with to begin with.
I sent Mr. Fischer an email stating my time was wasted dealing with GCU and how poorly a Christian University is about the customer service I received for months. I needed my finanical issues to be corrected. As of this day, my situation hasn't been solved. I did made an attempt to call Mr. Fischer who as in the past is never in the office. I guess Dr. Player is what she is a player.
Extremely poor service at a Christian University, how sad. This complaint could go longer. I have every email and documentation of the long issues I have gone through for the past year and a few days with GCU.
