H&R Block Reviews

misleading liers
I went to H&R Block this year expecting to get the same great service i received last year. After calling the appointment line to try to get in for a Emerald Advance i was given the wrong appointment day and wrong office and when i showed up to where i thought my appointment was i was told i had no appointment scheduled there. I had asked the appointment line guy if i could just walk in and be seen and he said no i had to make a appointment and found out later that was a lie. Anyways i apply for the advance with someone who was at least 80 (not lying) and said he had not done a Emerald Advance before but there was no one else that could help at the time ( poor old guy i felt sorry for him so i allowed him to do my application anyways) well i ended up pretty much doing the application myself because he kept entering the wrong info into the computer but i got approved anyways so i was happy. I went back after i got my W-2's to file my return and told the preparer i wanted my refund back the same way i got last year which was a RAL and he kept mentioning something about a RAC and i kept asking what that was and was told we would go over all of that once we were done ( RAC sounded like the same as a RAL to me) i was asked about childcare expenses when it came to that part and i told them i had almost $3000 in expenses but he made it seem like i didnt have enough to claim and that it wouldnt be worth getting the receipt for ( last year my husband was a stay at home dad so we didnt have childcare last year so i didnt know anything about that credit) so he made it seem like it would make no difference on my tax return well at the end of it all i find out that i have to wait 8-15 days for my tax return which i should have been told that they do not do the RAL's anymore and i was also lied to when i asked about it and was told no one was doing the RAL's anymore because the IRS has banned them. Jackson and Hewitt still does RAL's but will not ever be going there again either and that is a whole nother story!!! Was told when we came back to complain that they would see if we could file a ammended tax return to claim the childcare expenses at no expense but a couple days later got a nasty and rude 5 minute message saying it was our fault for that and that we would have to pay if we wanted it done. Well maybe it was somewhat our fault for trusting them to know how to file a tax return and telling us we could have gotten another $500 for the childcare but next year i will go elsewhere and will use a accountant which only charges around $100-150 instead of the approximate $260 i was charged and would get it back sooner too! Oh and did i mention the guy that did my 2nd return was around 70! I will be filing my ammended return myself!

Not fast or accurate
Last year I decided to do my taxes online with H&R Block because they "guaranteed" a "fast and accurate" return. I paid for their premium program. After entering in all my info and answering the questions, I e-filed my return. Upon reviewing it, I realized that I had been given a credit that I didn't qualify for. I went back and reviewed my answers just to make sure that it wasn't my mistake and then got online with one of their tax experts. After about 45 min., she told me via email that it appeared to be a software glitch and she was going to notify the tech dept. so they could get it fixed right away. Except now I had just paid for faulty software and have to repay $1000 and go through the hassle of ammending my taxes next year. After a number of phone calls where I received the run around, I sent a copy of the email and my complaint to corporate asking for a refund, given that they did NOT stand by their guarantee. That was 10 months ago. No answer and no effort to fix things. There are a lot of free tax prep programs online. I would NOT choose to go with H&R Block online in the future.

Had my refund for 2+ years, won't give me my money!
Discovered from the IRS that they refunded $2298.00 and $419.50 on 10-17-2008 into an account with H&R Block for my 2007 taxes. When I went to H&R Block to do my taxes 4-12, H&R Block sold me on the Rapid Refund. Well, after calling for 2-3 weeks to see where the money was, I was informed through the IRS that they were holding my refund because I had an outstanding tax return from 2004. On 11-4-2010, the IRS informed me of the deposits made and when they were made. On 11-5-2010, I called H&R Block, they acknowledged receipt of the $2298.00 only. They said they sent out the pre-pd credit card but it was never activated. They then told me that they would request the re-issue of a new card, it would be overnighted to me via Fed-Ex, and that it would be in my hands NO LATER than Wednesday, 11-10, and I could call Monday for a tracking number. I called again Wednesday, 11-10 for the tracking number. This time I was told they never get the tracking numbers, they don't send things out overnight, the card was made 11-8 and would be in my hands, NO LATER than Friday, 11-12. Today, 11-12 I called, was told the card was never issued or on the way. Sorry, ma'am, nothing we can do. I asked for a supervisor and was placed on hold for a very long time. The supervisor came on the line, said the card was never issued and was not on the way. She was very sorry I was misinformed and told me they do not send things overnight, that is not their contract with Fed Ex, the other 3 people I talked to did not give me the right information, sorry ma'am. She said they arrive in 3-5 business days. I told her that I wanted my money transferred into my bank account immediately. She said she could do that but it would take 5-7 business days. I was never offered this option, had we done that, I would have had my money today. She said there was no way it could be done faster, and the best thing to do was to get another card requested and that it will be sent out overnight through Fed Ex...(wait a minute, "WE DON'T SEND THINGS OUT OVERNIGHT..." I told her I wanted to speak with her supervisor, to which she said she was the top supervisor, there was no one else above her. I told her I wanted the interest refunded to me also for the past 2+ years, she said she could request it, but they were not going to do it. DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH H&R BLOCK!!! I don't see how they can be allowed to continue to steal from honest, hardworking people.

incompitence
This office does not understand the First Time Home Buyers Tax Credit. My 21 year old son bought his first house and met all of the qualifications for the tax credit. He bought the home along with his older brother, who does not qualify for the tax credit. Under the IRS guidlines, unmarried co-borrowers can still qualify for the tax credit...with the full credit going to the tax payer who qualified. In contrast, married co-borrowers must both qualify or niether tax payer qualifies for the credit.
My son has gone into the same office three times and has recieved three different outcomes. First they told him that, since he and his brother weren't married, he didn't qualify. Next, he was told that he didn't qualify at all, married or otherwise. And yesterday he was told that he will recieve a $4700 refund/ credit! They based the $4700 credit on a calculation that since he only owns half of the house he only recieves half of the credit! He should recieve the full $8000 credit. I even attempted to read the preparer the code straight from IRS.Gov, Forbes.com, Bloomberg.com and other publications.
My son heard the preparers refer to other similar instances where married couples, where only one qualified, recieved the tax credit ( whistle blowing!...can you hear it?) and how others like him did not...( how much money has this office cost other filers or how many future audits did it cause?). My calls to 1-800-hrblock have only frustrated the situation by requiring me to talk to a woman ( Britany) who was more interested in talking over me and at me than she was in answering a simple tax question related to the tax credit. Interestingly, every main H&R Block office ( Atlanta, Savannah, Augusta, Columbia, etc) that answered my question..."Hey, I bought a house with my brother and met all of the requirements for the tax credit, but my brother does not...do I qualify for the credit? Yes. Can you do my ammended return? Yes.
We will straighten this out...but beware. H&R Block almost cost my son $8000. By the way...the Buford, Georgia office ( the one that got paid for services) has yet to call us back as promised and advised us to go ahead and file the $4700 ammended return and ..." if we find out that we were wrong...come back in and we will file another ammended return for you".

Never in a million years would I go back to H&R Block to get my taxes done
I have been going to H&R Block for a few years now, and have had an "ok" experience...until I get home yesterday and have a letter in the mail from the IRS. I open it and it tells me I owe them over $6, 000 in Federal alone. I took the letter down to the H&R Block office I did my taxes at and they told me I did not supply all of my W2's, so I pull out my copy of the return and show them I indeed DID bring everything into them. They review everything and tell me "i'm sorry, i didn't see this one". Then continued to tell me since my husband and I worked at the same place that they thought it was a duplicate W2 and just set it aside. This was a $20, 000 "miskey". They told me that they will only pay $5, 000 of the mistake and we would have to pay the rest. Then they tell me this is not including the fees I will now owe the state, which comes to a total to around, $1, 700. I told them that it was their mistake and they should have to pay ALL of it. The lady at the desk tells me that the "piece of mind" only covers up to $5, 00 plus any interest and penalty's. I proceeded to ask her if they have an E&O policy (errors and omissions) she of course does not know what I am talking about. Before I Leave the office, the lady tells me that she will contact me and let me know if the claim is approved. I ask her what do you mean if it is approved. So I am stuck knowing if I have to fight this or if they will be HONEST and pay it. I leave the office and come into work to call the headquarters to speak with a supervisor. I asked him if H&R Block has an errors and omissions endorsement on their insurance policy. He tell me NO. I asked him if he was out of his mind and I would be contacting my attorney. Never in a million years would I go back to H&R Block to get my taxes done.

False advertising
H&R Block advertised "50% off what you paid last year" for new clients. What does that mean? To me it means they'll charge half what you paid last year. To them it means a credit this year of half what you paid last year. Last year I paid $450. This year I am charged $680. "50% off." Not so. Deceptive if not completely false advertising. Beware.

Incorrect Tax Refund
YES, H&R BLOCK WORKS FOR THE IRS

Due to a personal situation I was not able to have the IRS do my taxes last year for the year 2008 so I went to HRBLOCK and paid $164.00 to HRBLOCK to have my 2008 taxes done this year. 2009 was ok and done but they IRS was not able to do it. anyway I was supposed to received $1420.00 according to HRBLOCK but instead I got a check from the IRS for $237.00 I went back to the HRBLOCK office to see if they can help me understand why I received such small amount, but I got from them such a fancy explanation, that I truly walk out of their office with the inside of my head in BLANK, so, then I called the IRS and guess what, they told me to check it out with HRBLOCK they said that's how it was send from hrblock and that they go by the records and what's on the system...oh heck, I guess next time I'l go straight to the IRS and have them do my taxes IT WILL BE CHEAPER...!!!...

mistakes committed by H&R Block
I went to H&R Block to have my taxes prepared, and was seated with a so-called tax professional. I presented all my paperwork as instructed, and I left thinking all was well. (GUESS AGAIN) When I returned home and started to look over my paperwork, because the amount was so small that it did not make sense, so I did my own preperation, and just as I thought, I found several mistakes. I went back and told them my situation, and they said they would correct it. So I thought that was the end, all was well(WRONG AGAIN). I recieved a letter from the IRS, asking me for form EIC. By this time I was irate. because, this was trip #3 and I was fed up with there excuses. So I explained that now the IRS needs more paperwork and I should not have to pay them a dime-WRONG AGAIN. They charged me $118.00 and I am still waiting for my refund. Oh yeah, they send me an e-mail saying it was going into my emerald account even after I was told by one of there so called tax pro's that I would get it in the mail. Bottom line, I'm still paying them $118.00 for there mistakes and have yet to recieve my money. So make sure if anyone decides to use there services, look over your return before leaving there office. Next year I;ll save my money and do it myself.
