I used to subscribe to Popular Mechanics, a magazine published by HEARST PUBLICATIONS. In an effort to keep within my budget, I decided not to renew the subscription. However, HEARST sent me a bill anyway. Since I did not agree to renew my subscription, I did not pay the bill. HEARST then sent me another bill, which I wrote “CANCEL – DID NOT ORDER” on the bill and returned. I did this twice more. Then I received a notice from SUNRISE CREDIT SERVICES, INC., a collection agency, telling me to pay up!
The Bill? $10! AND HEARST has not sent the magazines to which they are so diligently trying to get paid! Why am I concerned over $10? Because it is unethical and coercive behavior that should be illegal. $10 from me is not much, but if this is their standard practice, it adds up to a significant amount, as most people would probably “pay off” the company…
