I bought a car and a friend recommended I take it to Hi-tech auto for a 101 point inspection, and a tune-up. A week later I sent it to them again with vibration and clanking sound between gears. I was the one who pointed out the u-joint. They said it would also need a hanger bearing.
In my next trip under the hood to check the fluids I suspected that the oil wasn't changed, nor were the plug wires. The car was not running any better, so i took it to another mechanic who gave me a list of what needed to be changed, including plugs, wires, and he showed me how the dist cap was cleaned, and under it was a well used rotor. The air filter hadn't even been changed, and in the inspection nobody noticed that the air filter housing was cracked to the point the filter wasn't even working. Nobody noticed the rubber had separated on the transmision mounts, and a few other obvious things.
The hanger bearing wasn't changed either, and the u-joint was rebuilt from needle bearings from somewhere in the garage. The u-joint caps were sticking out 1/8 inch wnen tack welded into place.
Three visits with an average price per visit, $600., and other than the time it was on the lift, I can't be sure the car ever entered the garage.
