Background Checks
A few things about dealing with HireRight:

1) They are contracted by companies to perform background checks, however the EMPLOYER is the one with the last say. You'll be surprised how much a simple phone call to the HR department/Recruiting department at your prospective employer can go in circumventing much of the bogusness that HireRight likes to put applicants through.

2) I suspect (but cannot prove 100%) that the people conducting the searches for HireRight are not based in the United States. My reasoning for this is in my dealing with them, not 1 employee that I spoke to had an American accent, and there was a serious delay when they would call, or when speaking with them on the phone. They told me to get a W-2 from the IRS and send it back within 24 hours -- bwahahahaha!!! They can't be from here if they think our government would ever do anything that quickly.

3) DO NOT SEND THEM YOUR W-2 or any other personal information you do not feel comfortable in giving out. News flash: most companies DO NOT require this type of information for hiring unless you are trying to gain some type of government/security clearance.

4) DO contact HR at your prospective employer each time HireRight requests information from you. It is absolutely 150% a waste of time talking to those people, so just hang up the phone when you hit a brick wall and call your employer. This serves 2 purposes: 1) to ensure that your employer is in the loop as far as where the background check process is and that the holdup is NOT on your end, and 2) to make the prospective employer aware that they are paying the nimrods at HireRight to do absolutely nothing but send retarded emails to their applicants asking for the DNA of your first-born child to verify what junior college you attended for a semester in 1993.

Lastly, do not be afraid of HireRight! Again, keep in mind that the employer calls the final shot, and in some cases (such as mine) they will basically ignore HireRight's insane requests and hire you anyway...but you have to speak up and let HR/your recruiter know what's going on!

Hope this helps!

Costing me a job
I am in a total state of shock about this company. I applied for a job and was told I was going to be hired and they needed to start the paperwork. I then recieved an email from hireright for a background check. Sure, no problem I thought...Boy was I wrong. I have been a truck driver for 33 yrs. I passed the background check for my TWIC and my HAZMAT. Hireright began asking for the impossible..they wanted documentation in the form of a W-2, 1099 or paystub for a company I began employment with in 1998..13 yrs ago! How am I suppose to supply that type of documentation from 13 yrs ago? I would have to go thru IRS or Social security to get that information and that could take weeks. Well hireright more or less told me "to bad". If I could not supply the documentation in the time allotted then they would close my background check and notify the company it is incomplete. So you know what that means...I JUST GOT LOST OUT OF ON A JOB I AM VERY WELL QUALIFIED FOR! They won't even call my past employers to verify. I even gave them the phone number of the employer who taught me how to drive truck in 1978. How many of you keep your paystubs or w-2's for 13 yrs? The worse part about all this run around..the job was only for 6 weeks...Every time I tried to talk with someone at hireright, I would always get a different person. I have emailed, never a response. And they wonder why there is so much unemployment!

Company lies
Very unprofessional and unorganized. They send the same email for documentation they have already have. They do not communicate with and every time you call this company you get a different person. Very poor business ethic. I did not feel secure giving this company my personal information. I decided not to take the job with the company. Be advised I would think twice before giving my personal information to HireRight. If a company is doing a background Investigation using HireRight I would think twice about that company.

Companys that use HireRight can't fill positions
I have been trying to fill my Software Engineer position for over 11 months. Each time I get a good applicant, spend a day interviewing them and make them an offer.

Next HR puts them though the HireRight mess. This takes several weeks as they have to proof ever positions they had on their resume sometimes with taxes etc. It is suppose to be a simple verification, but it ends up being more like getting a loan for house.

Each time the applicant either gives up on the verification process or just accepts another offer and I have to start all over again.

You can't expect a good software engineer to stay on the market for a month while you make them verify the job they had 10 years ago at the company that no longer exists.

Because of company's like HireRight who have no idea how things work in the real world, we can never hire anyone and have to use contractors. They come and go and it would be much better to hire a full time person.

HireRight Cost me a Job
HireRight said I lied about the dates of Employment on a Job. They gave me a short time to disprove this by faxing in 5 year old Tax returns I didn't have when I was out of town on Business. I was given 48 hours to do this.
I requested a copy of the Final Report, It turns out, and that they called the wrong company. By the time I found out and saw the final report, it was too late.
The other terrible thing on the report was that the marked my Masters Degree with a discrepancy. It turns out the end date of enrollment was allowed to be left blank on their form. Although the start date, the Degree date was correct, they said they had to mark it a discrepancy because the last date attended I gave them (blank) didn’t match what they verified. This doesn't sound bad but your degree shows up on the final report with a big RED (discrepancy) mark on it.
If HireRight makes a mistake, you won’t know until it’s too late. You are considered guilty until proven innocent. Also they will mark a big red discrepancy on your degree if you leave anything blank even though the degree is correct, school is correct and date and month is correct. So you better remember what day Grad school started in August of 1996, or your degree will show up with a big red discrepancy on the final HireRight form. Why do they do this? It turns out for every discrepancy they have to verify, they get a surcharge.

How many people are needlessly unemployed because of this company and others like it?
