I was home for lunch one afternoon & a couple of salesmen from Utah were in our neighborhood (Calif.)
going door-to-door selling Honeywell Alarms. While I was in the backyard these 2 salesmen came to our door.
My mom, who has severe dementia, let them in our house. Only one of the salesmen did all the talking.
I'll try to make this as short as I can. He was really pushing the advertising of their company sign (alarm sign)
to be put in our front yard if we use their system. I told him it's just my mom & I & we're on a fixed income &
we don't need this system. I told him we have good neighbors that we've known for many, many years & we
all know each neighbors schedule. So when someone or something doesn't look like they belong there then
they are on it. He then preceeded to tell me that it would only be a one (1) time monthly fee of 42.99.
Now, while this is taking place in our kitchen not once did he ask for a credit card. There was no exchange
of a credit card, check, or anything between my mom and this salesman. Oh, he then says it will be a 20%
discount on our home owners insurance. I thought woo-hoo! That would be great! I again asked him
that it's only a one (1) time charge of 42.99. He said YES it is. BUT not to tell any of my neighbors. He really
emphasized the part about not telling any of our neighboors.
He then asked us to sign the form. Mom couldn't finish signing her name so I finished her signature then
signed my own. He said the tech. man will be there after work to install the alarm. Back to work I went. The tech man was already in the house when I got home & almost finished. (Thanks mom).
After several weeks there is a charge on my mom's credit card for 42.99. I couldn't believe that this salesman
was able to talk my mom into giving him her credit card while I WAS NOT HOME. He knew that she had
a form of dementia because it is only obvious when you talk to her. I tried to get in touch with Grant (the salesman)
on his cell phone but he doesn't answer. I'm currently in the process of trying to cancell the 36 mon. contract
with Monotronics. I would have never asked my mom to give them her credit card AT ALL. We don't need this
service & haven't even used it. Not once.
