bad service
DON'T USE HOTWIRE. YOU WILL END UP AT THE WORST HOTELS AND WITH THE CRAPPIEST RENTAL CARS. IF YOU GIVE BAD FEEDBACK ON A HOTEL THEY SIMPLY FILE IT IN THE ROUND FILE AND KEEP BOOKING THAT HOTEL. IF YOU RENT A CAR WITH THEM, BE PREPARED TO GET A SCRATCH AND DENT OLDER MODEL CAR. THEY MUST HAVE ARRANGEMENTS WITH ALL THESE COMPANIES TO TAKE THE CRAPPIEST HOTEL ROOMS AND CARS. THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT THE CUSTOMER. YOU ARE BETTER OFF PAYING A FEW DOLLARS MORE AND HAVING AN ENJOYABLE TRIP. HOTWIRE IS NOT TO BE TRUSTED.

Took money, no hotel
It's 2:30 in the morning. Have spent 3 hours trying to get either my hotel or my money back. Hotwire took the money from my bank instantly but I never received the hotel information. After numerous calls to my bank and on a conference call with hotwire, they still refused to honor the purchase.
They told the CC company to release the funds and I would have to re-book, but I would have to pay the higher charge since it was a live site and they couldn't honor the price that I booked at.
I have talked to at least 3 of the other parents from the softball team as we are all traveling together and got the same BS. Looks like they monitor areas and refuse to complete sales/raise prices when an area is hot.
I refuse to support them ever again. Trust, Confidence and Honesty is what I look for when dealing with a business. Not people trying to line their pockets.

Misbooked Flight
On 6/12/2010 I booked a flight with hotwire.com from Pennsylvania to Florida departing 7/1/2010-7/5/2010. I reviewed the flight request and pressed confirm. I then printed out my itinerary and filed it away until I was closer to my trip. On 6/15/2010, I pulled out my itinerary to review my travel times and realized that hotwire.com's website made a mistake. My itinerary stated that I was departing 6/15/2010-6/17/2010. I called hotwire.com and they told me that I had missed my flight and that the remaining connections were cancelled. I informed them that I had requested my flight for 7/1-7/5. The CSR told me that I should contact the airline. Upon contacting the Airline, they told me that I had missed the flight as booked by hotwire.com. On 6/16/2010 12amEST I called hotwire back and advised them that they made a mistake and the CSR (Jay) stated that he could see in the timestamp of their website that I had indeed requested the dates 7/1-7/5. He stated that it didnt make any sense and and sent the information to the research team. 2 days later 6/18/2010, I received an email simply stating that I had missed my flight and that they couldnt do anything about it. I called hotwire back and spoke to CSR (Tim) at 12:30am who saw the same information and connected me with his supervisor Delia at 1:02am 6/18. Delia stated that she sees the information that I talked to Jay about and that she took screen shots and sent it to the research department to correct. Later that evening, the research team replied with the response that I had missed my flight because I had changed my return flight, which caused my departing flight to be changed. I called hotwire back again and this time asked to speak directly with a supervisor. I spoke with Delia again. She contacted Continental airlines who stated that there were no changes made to my flight (it was what was reserved by hotwire.com). She sent the notes from the conversation to the research team. They have just been giving me the run around. BUYER BEWARE- Hotwire's web server messes up from time to time and it is difficult to get it fixed. If this situation is not fixed, I will have to get my lawyer involved.

Fraud
I thought i had found a really good rate for my family's memorial weekend vacation. I asked for a room for 4...and assumed it would be non smoking. After boooking I saw the crappy hotel that was supposed to be a 2+ star hotel. The hotel informed me I was getting a king sized bed...and it was in a smoking room. When i called hotwire.com to complain I was told sorry...they were rude..not willing to get me into another hotel nor would they refund my money. i have used other online booking companies like hotels.com and have never had an issue. I would stay away from this bait and switch company!

Misleading advertising
On May 5, 2010 I used Hotwire.com to try to book a hotel in Manhattan, NY. The Hotwire hotel search for the area revealed 3-1/2 star hotels listed in Downtown - SoHo area. The site revealed a map showing lower Manhattan which included SoHo.
I booked the hotel based on their deceptive advertising that indicated the hotels would be in SoHo. Imagine my surprise when the hotel chosen popped up right next to Ground Zero at the World Trade Center location. I've traveled to NYC for over 30 years and I know where SoHo is and is not Battery Park / World Trade Center area. This is not where I wanted or intended to stay. Hotwire should not be allowed to conduct misleading advertisement for their locations. Rather than "SoHo", it should have been revealed that the area was all of the lower tip of Manhattan that a hotel could be in any of that area. That revelation was not apparent at all and in the remainder of the information, that potential was not revealed that I could see. The ad quotes "Downtown - SoHo area Hotel".
I've now noted that Hotwire has been sued and penalized for deceptive advertising in the past. "Hotwire has been fined $50, 000 following a federal inquiry that found the online travel company was running deceptive advertising." http://news.cnet.com/Regulators-fine-Hotwire-over-ads/2100-1017_3-961124.html
I am not surprised given my experience. Hotwire should be stopped from such deceitful advertising. My advice, do not use Hotwire.

No benefit to service
Booked a Holiday Inn through Hotwire and discovered that Holiday Inn offered a better rate on their website than Hotwire offered. Hotwire refused to allow a cancellation and was completed unsympathetic (e.g "too bad for you!") We won't ever use HW again. Unfortunately, it used to be pretty good but obviously the chains are trying to destroy their business model. Buyer beware!

I will absolutely will not use this provider again
Slammers-these folks want to make a sale come hell or high water. The guy I spoke, (Rick) used high pressure sales techniques. I asked to speak to his manager three times. Every time, it talked his way out of it. When I got Supervisor: Mike 0114 on the phone, he joins in the same jacked up song, saying that he had to listen to it first to make an decision. I ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT USE THIS PROVDIER AGAIN.

Quality of Service
My letter of disapproval to Hotwire.com:
Hotwire.com Superiors and Affiliates,
With deepest regret, Hotwire.com and their affiliates have disappointed me to no avail. I am shocked and offended at how my vacation planning took place with the Hotwire team, and will NEVER seek your services again. To begin, my vacation was quoted at $910.64, Hotwire took my credit card number, charged it, and was authorized to $910.64 of my U.S. dollars. To my surprise I did not receive my vouchers or hotel info via email, as stated. I called my bank, collected all information pertaining to the $910.64 authorization, including the terminal ID and toll free number. Upon calling the toll free number I sat on the phone or hold for an hour or more, just for the CSR to inform me the price had risen $51.00 and I would have to pay that amount, regardless of Hotwire already holding my account for $910.64, the initial price of the vacation package. I then had to wait another hour for my bank to straighten out the charge and release it. I was instructed to call back, not use the website, to book the vacation. I voiced concern to Ronald the CSR and he advised to ask to speak to a supervisor for a favorable outcome. As it just so happens, I call back, lose connection with the first CSR, then call back and talk with a second CSR who listens to me, offers little help, so I ask for a supervisor. The supervisor via CSR offers a $50.00 coupon-BUT WAIT- the price has risen another $50.00! I could not believe my ears! Could this be real? Supervisor Mikaela had no understanding, no ability to see the obvious error from Hotwire charging $910.64, then saying, "No, that's not quite enough. Make it another $50.00" If there were ever a scam this is it. It didn't happen once, but twice, IN ONE DAY. By the end of my 6 hour debacle with Hotwire and their affiliates I had nearly $1000 dollars tied up and unusable for future transactions, and no vacation to show for, but a horribly orchestrated fear tactic that my vacation destination was rising $50.00 on the hour, so I better make my purchase now. On closing, I want to make Hotwire and affiliates aware of the current and future business they have funneled to the competition. I will no doubt pay $900-950 for this trip. I will gladly pay more to another company, just so long as it doesn't benefit Hotwire or affiliates. I will not use this site for future trips, which is 2-3 a year. Lastly, I will make very certain every companion on the trips (June will be me and four friends, all of which no longer consider Hotwire or affiliates trustworthy). I intend on my network of other business owners, friends, and family knowing that above all, Hotwire dominates but one market, con artistry. Being a business owner, I know all too well the power of referral. I also know it takes ten good referrals to counter one really bad referral. Good luck with that.
With Deepest Regrets,
Yours Truly,
Lindsey (last name withheld)
