HSBC Reviews

Awful bank
I became late in my payment to HSBC-Orchard Bank and was contacted by a representative of this card company. I told them that a payment would be made soon. I was told that a notation of my comment would be made on my account. I was called about 10 times about my account. No notation was made about my conversations with Orchard Bank. Watch out when you use the Orchard Bank Card. They will harass you many time even if you talk with a representative about your account.

Terrible bank
At Target yesterday, in the check out line, my card denied. Called HSBC they said nothing personal, across the board, protecting ourselves. Lowered my limit from 8600 to 3300 with no notice, no reason. Always pay on time, never overlimit, had account for app 8 years. This was 2/24/09, they said they would be sending a notice out on the 27th!!! I use my card for everything during the month, then usually pay it off at the end of the month. It has always been convenient for keeping track of purchases. Anyway, now I am overlimit. They best not charge me an overlimit fee! I'm sure my credit scores which are excellent are going to drop. We are planning to purchase a home this Spring, so have been working hard to make sure all is in order, am afraid this may have really messed us up. Funny, I have 2 cards HSBC and Bank of America which I rarely use, BOA just increased my limit by 3000 last month!! What's up with HSBC, very bad business. I will not use this card again.

As I do from time to time, I checked the position of my HSBC - Mastercard to ensure everything was up to date and in good standing as I have kept it since opening this account. I came to find out that my credit limit was slashed by nearly $3400! No justification was given but for that it was a business decision by HSBC after a review of their customer base and accounts. I am not unsophisticated nor naive to think this could not have happened to me, since I have heard warnings from various news sources that this could happen at any moment, to anyone. But even to someone who consistently keeps his account up to date, paying the account in full every month?

HSBC, through the economic turmoil that is enveloping the U.S., if not the world, has seen its market capitalization decrease significantly since 2007 when it was nearly on par with Citigroup. However, it still remains one of the largest, if not the largest, banks in the world! So, in addition to my question above, if HSBC is doing this, are the others not far behind? In fact, the only surprise to me in all of this really is that others have not done similar already.

But this cannot be the way. The consumer has made some mistakes I am sure, as have the banks. But the banks cannot get the bailouts on some contrived notion that without them, this economy fails while the consumer not only receives no bail out at all but is increasingly burdened with a lack of credit. With the banks, the economy failed and now as we the people are trying help them, they are failing the very consumer that got them where they were and are helping them get out of where they are.

If this is a business decision, then it should be the people's decision to let them fail, go bankrupt and disappear. If they will not lend nor provide credit, what do we need them for? Sympathy they will not give.

lower card amount/increase interest rate
I have had an account with HSBC for severl years, with a credit limit of 2500. I used the card generally at least once a month, paying off the balance within a few months of using it <vacations, travel expensis, etc>.

I was shopping, and went to payusing my HSBC card, and was told by the clerk that i needed to contact HSBC about my card.

Fearing that it had been 'hacked', I checked online. I found that HSBC had cut my credit limit from 25oo to 300, and raised my interest rate from 6% to 25%!

I called, and was told that i WOULD be getting a letter explaining the incresases - but it has ALREADY BEEN CHANGED - this is completly outragious. I asked, and the change has nothing to do with my payment history <excellent>, or my credit rating <good - excelent>, but with a 'change of policy'. I asked what would happen if i had kept a large balance on the card? With the suden decrease, I was told that I would be charged an over-limit fee every month untill it was either paid off or fell below the 300$!

What is the point of having a cc with a $300 limit, at 25% interest?!

I immediatly closed the account, stating that i would not do businenss with a company that treated customers in such a manner.

I hope that everyone that has an HSBC card cancels their accounts.

Unauthorized billing
I had my GM Mastercard canceled... I thought! Then, I received fraudulent charges on the account that took 6 months for them to finally waive and close.

The fraudulent claims were waived, but interest was charged for the amount which was waived for the 6 months! Ludicrous! I called 'Customer Service' many many times only to be treated with disrespect by agents with foreign accents. Funny how one of the fraudulent charges was for a prepaid phonecard to India. The interest that I refuse to pay has been added as 'potentially negative' on my credit report.

I had 2 cc acct's with HSBC for years. Suddenly approx 2 yrs ago they raised the int rates to 30%, so you know what that did to the payments. I started to fall behind and I contacted them to make arrangements. I was told that I had to give them access to my bank acct to be able to do a set amt each month, so I did. I was then told that they couldn't do that and I needed to send them a payment each month in the set amount so that is what I did. A few months later after going over my bank acct I noticed that they were deducting the amt anyway (isn't that stealing) and also taking my other payment. I contacted them letting them know, I was told that since I was paying this set amt they couldn't work with me. I was laid off at the time and couldn't believe that they wouldn't work with me and set up some sort of arrangement so I could continue paying. I had no choice but to stop paying all together. It was that or lose my home. I was then contacted by a person (i'm being nice by calling him that) who constantly called and harassed, name called and brutally degraded my wife, which I believe is illegal, am I right? He told her I was having an affair and hiding the charges on these credit cards, etc. Now we have a law firm, Weltman, Weinberg & Reis calling us day & night. No one wants to make payment arrangements they want us to pay them over 14k now, today! the original amt's were 3k & 4k. They are accruing over $200 a mth each in interest and $39 each late chg each mth. If anyone had that money wouldn't they just pay these people? The point of making arrangements is to do the right thing and we are being severely penalized for trying. Isn't there a way we can all bring a class action suit against this company for unlawful practices? We also have a Polaris Star card thru HSBC and they constantly mess with the acct too and we pay on that one. They never set the correct date of payment so they can collect a late fee.

i was charged this on many credit cards. they attach to your credit acct and charge you for just an envelope full of nothing if anything at all. dont use this credit cards if any credit or debit cards at all they allow it also. it will make you go over the amount for you to pay 2-3 times as more.

Lender on motorcycle
HSBC is the lender for a motorcycle which I bought and my Grandfather cosigned for. Since the beginning they have made it impossible to make payments. I bought it in March of 2008 I did not recieve my first bill til Sept. of 2008. I was not allowed to make payments online which was the way it was originally set up, when I called them they would not allow me to make payments over the phone without my grandfathers S.S. number. After repeated phone calls we figured out that they had my grandfather as the buyer instead of the cosigner and still after dozens more calls they will not change it. The original interest rate was 7.5 and it is now 17.9. We tried to get the payoff so we could refinance and the payoff has gone up 5000.00$ from what the bike was bought for. My grandfather is 72 and has had perfect credit his whole life and now has a flag up on his credit. They have us trapped and we recently learned Suzuki which is where I bought the motorcycle will not do business with them any longer because of "questionable practices". I need help. They are calling my grandfather 2 or 3 times a day claiming not to have received payment in 9 months. in November we decided to just refinance I quit making payments at that time but before that the payments were made.

I am a victim of identity theft closed my acct 3/2008 my limit was $300. I requested all documentation including charges, where they were made and my signature three times they sent me garbage showing I owe $497. then another $600 now another $803.00 they still have not sent me anything showing my signature or where charges were made. They are known for ripping people off, I wander how they get away with this? Orchard is also known as HSBC.
