Huntington Bank Reviews

Discrimination
I am transgendered, and Huntington Bank refused to phone verify me because my voice sounded like the gender opposite their records, even though I had given them all of my account and identifying information correctly. Instead I had to mail my information into their corporate office (with even less identifying information attached).

overdraft protection - opting in
I opened a new checking account last May at Huntington Bank. I have liked the account and never had any fees, problems, or issues.

I have heard about the new legislation where consumers now have to "opt-in" for "overdraft protection" for transactions on their ATM/debit card. I didn’t really know what that meant. I just always figured if you didn’t have the money in your checking account, the transaction would just be declined. Made sense to me. Well I was called last week asking if I wanted to “opt-in” to the overdraft protection which means that I won’t have those “embarrassing situations” when a charge is declined due to no available funds and the “bank is there to protect me” and I have “24 hours to put the money back into my account” to cover any negative balance and I will “never be assessed a fee.”

Well here is what happened. I rarely use this card/checking account but set it up last May because they sent me one of those free $100 offers if I signed up for a new checking account and put money in it every month by direct deposit. So I put in $100 a month and don’t really use this account much.

Last Friday I had a balance in the account of $45.55. Over the weekend I made a few purchases:

$10.00 – entrance fee (for 2) to a bar/club – balance now = $35.55
$7.80 – late night Taco Bell (bad, I know) – balance now = $27.75
$8.59 – gas station, don’t remember what – balance now = $19.16

Now here is where it gets interesting. I went to the drive-thru for beer (yes, we have drive-thrus for beer in Ohio) at Macadoo’s, where I have been going for well over 8 years now for beer. The beer after tax was $6.59. She ran my card and came to me with the little clip board to sign and the receipt showed $65.90. She obviously mis-keyed the transaction amount and added a zero at the end. Now in the old world, this would have just been declined, she would have noticed and then ran it for the correct amount, which would have been approved and brought my balance down to $12.57. But because I now have this amazing protection from the bank, it ran through and made my account negative (pending transactions only, nothing has posted to my account yet – it’s the weekend). I noticed the amount was wrong on the receipt and I told her so she cancelled the transaction and printed me a receipt for the right amount, $6.59.

On Monday I still showed an account balance of $45.55. However I had 5 pending transactions:

Bar/club - $10.00
Taco Bell - $7.80
Speedway - $8.59
Macadoo’s - $65.90
Macadoo’s - $6.59

So on Monday night/Tuesday evening, even though only the four legitimate transactions were presented for payment, they still deducted that $65.90 from my available balance, which I guess is now what they are using to determine if you overdrew your account.

So they took the largest amount first (even though it was a cancelled transaction, I never signed for it, Macadoo’s never presented the amount for payment) and deducted it from my account. So my balance now equals ($45.55 - $65.90 = -$20.35)

So then they charge me $37.50 each for the other 4 transactions totaling $150.00 saying my account was overdrawn when the 4 items were presented for payment, even though ONLY the 4 legitimate charges were – the $65.90 was NOT. They assess these fees on 2/15/11, however if you look at my account ending on 2/14/11 (actual balance – ignoring that pending/incorrect transaction), it shows they paid all 4 VALID transactions and my true/real/posted account balance never went negative. It did not go negative until after they posted the $150 in fees on 2/15/11.

So my question is this… how can a bank say you overdrew your account on a transaction that will never be presented for payment, was never presented for payment, was cancelled by the merchant, and never posted to my account?

Had I never opted in to the “overdraft protection” they would not have allowed my balance to go negative when she accidentally overcharged me and I wouldn’t have been charged $150 on 4 charges totaling around $30. The transaction would have been declined and the merchant would have noticed – keyed in the right amount – end of story.

The overdraft protection is a scam. It is just a way for the banks to now be able to legally assess you fees. Think about this if you are thinking about opting into this service. It is just a way for banks to make money by bypassing the law Obama signed in July, 2010 to protect consumers from this very thing. By now “opting-in” you are really just allowing banks to manipulate your account as best they can to get more money out of you in outrageous fees.

Oh, and about getting those fees back (the erroneous $65.90 did drop off my account and was never presented for payment), the bank is telling me that it is the merchant’s fault and I have to take it up with them. I doubt Macadoo’s is going to give me $150 for an honest mistake/transaction that she did cancel on their credit card machine and they never presented to the bank for payment. It just still (to the bank’s benefit) sat on my account as a pending charge that they used to deduct from my available balance even thought it was never a valid charge so they could say I overdrew my account – which I never did.

Please pass this on so others are aware of what the banks are up to….

Horrible customer service
I received a crank call from someone who had my social security number and my checking account number. I consulted our local police and the Attorney General's office and they advised me to close my account immediately. I went to my local Huntington branch, explained the situation, closed the account and opened a new one. NOT SO FAST. First, they NEVER closed the account, Then the new account had a diiferent number on the account from the checks that were issued. I discovered this when a merchant verified that I had money in my account--otherwise, ALL the checks I would have written off this account would have bounced. Now I found that I'm being charged overdraft fees on my original account because THEY NEVER CLOSED IT! I went in the day I discovered this and asked them to close the account. They said the manger would handle it and call me later in the day. She never did. I called customer service and they said they would have the manager call me. Again, no call. I finally (9 days later) got the account closed, but they were suppoed to refund all fees. Didn't happen. When I called customer service (again) I was told the manager was handling this. Yeah, right. It's been two days and she hasn't picked up the phone. I closed this account to prevent theft, and so far the only one ripping me off is the bank!

Overdraft Fees
May 19th I had $67.05 in my Student Checking account (meaning no fees, no minimum balance). I then went and purchased gas for a total of $21.34 which left me with $45.71. I had no other pending purchases. I checked my account and was glad to see it had cleared, because I had some things to buy. I told myself I had to keep it under $45, and I did. I spent $44.73 (cutting it close, yes). The next day I get an e-mail from Huntington. I check and it says I've overdrawn. WHAT? I look at my account, and the 2nd purchase is still pending, as is the fee which is associated with the GAS purchase. After all is said and done they charge me ANOTHER overdraft for the other purchase). Keep in mind, each overdraft is $37.50. After the first overdraft I had $-36.52 in my account. Meaning, I clearly didn't go over. Though I already knew that.

I filed a complaint online and got a generic response. I don't even think they read my comments.

Held my paycheck
When I moved back to Columbus, after 10 months working cross country after college, I went to reopen a checking and savings account at HB. Previously, I had an account with them for 20 years and worked for them for a year during college.

When I moved back I bought a house and a car, thus emptying my savings account. I got a nice relocation package and signing bonus with my new job though. Unfortunately, it took about a month for my direct deposit to kick in.

A week after starting my job I deposited my bonus check (several thousand dollars). A day later I went to do an ATM withdraw and noticed there was only a couple hundred in my account. I immediately went in to confirm and they told me to talk to the manager.

So, I wait nearly 45 min in the lobby while the manager is in his office carrying on a non-business related conversation with someone. Finally, he calls me in. I sit down (it was a Saturday, so I was in a hoodie and jeans) and explain the situation. He says yes, all new accounts are required by the government to have 10 holds placed on them. (lie #1, its optional) This was a check issued by a multi-billion dollar company, I fairly certain it will clear. I then explain the situation about me being a former customer and having worked for them and everything. So then, he says, "well if you worked here, why am I having to explain the banking laws to you." By this point I'm boiling, I said to him that it has been over 4 years since I have worked at a bank and its my right as a customer to know why your holding my money. His response, "I have to keep that hold on your account until I feel comfortable that you will not be kiting checks." (lie # 2 - max is 30 days)

I could not believe it; not only was he holding my money, and lying to me, he was also accusing me of being thief. At this point I storm out of his office. I immediately call my former Huntington manager to let her know what just happened to me and she put me in touch with Customer Service. I tell them the situation and how them holding my money would limit my ability to even feed myself. They put in a an incident report and said they would be in touch. A couple days later I got a call from the VP of Customer Service. She apologized profusely and said this was not the first time that they had a problem with this manager. I said to her, then why is he still there. No response. I ended the call saying appreciate the quick apology, but was soured by the whole experience and will no longer be banking with them and demanding immediate access to my money. They complied.

Long story short, forget these big banks. They only way they will change their ways is when they start feeling it in their quarterly earnings reports. My advice stick to the community banks and credit unions.

Mortgage Modification
I applied for a home Modification in Feb 09 due to lack of work and being unemployed from the automotive industry. A hardship and was told I qualified for the modification. I provided all papers need: unemployment stubs, bank statements, and all other expenses. I was told it could take up to three months to process, therefore after three months I began calling the office to check on the my status and I never receive any calls backs after leaving several messages from April to July. In August I sent a letter to the corp. office in collections dpt. with dates and time the several calls I have made. Two weeks later I received a call back from Jessica Nechovski asking for additional information the next call from Jessica was Sept 8th she said I did not qualify because I was on unemployment and I needed to get a regular job. One week later my unemployment ran out and I began working in my past professional as a Cosmetologist for JcPenney salon, making much less than my unemployment. I have been to other agencies for help with this matter and have been told I was able to receive a modification during the initial start of my hardship and unemployment. Huntington National Bank has gave me a complete run around for the past 8 months and would not even take partial weekly payments to total my monthly payment by the end of each month. Other employees who have also been affected my Delphi's downsizing are with other banks and was not even able to receiving unemployment as income nor were they employed and have been able to get Home Modifications. Huntington Bank has refused to work with me to save my home and should be force to comply to the making homes affordable for all with hardships at this time in our depression.

the worst huntingtom branch
I want to start by saying that over all I really like Huntington bank, but there is one branch on the East Beltline in Grand Rapids that wins the award for the worst bank branch in the world. I dont have a acct. there but my wife does so sometimes she writes me a check and i will cash it. All the other branches have given me perfect customer service. I have been in the east beltline branch 15 time and 15 times they gave me a hard time. the last time i was cashing a check there from my wife, they said i needed 2 id's, ok, today i took 2 id's and the spent 1/2 hour trying to figure out how to cash it. they verified my wifes signature, my passport and dl. then they wanted to call her. fine but she didnt answer. sorry we cant cash it. wtf! they see me making deposits there every week! I think it must go back to the branch manager! managers hire people like themselves. i predict this branch will close if they dont replace the managers and employees. i know if they gave me a hard time 15 times in a row, that is for sure happening to others.. i will not waste my time at that branch ever again.

Refinance/
I applied for a refinance loan at The Huntington National Bank in Canton, Michigan. The mortgage representative was Debra Heardman which quoted a 6.99 interested rate. I provided the necessary paperwork and accepted the terms and agreed for the appraisal of the investment property. I had and appraial May 2008 ($131, 000.00) thru another bank. The city of Inkster appraisal $130, 000.00. Huntington Bank appraisal $82, 000.00 in August 2008. During the process of the loan, Ms. Debra Heardman was very kind. After appraisal she had no time for me nor answered any of my questions regarding appraisor different. Ms. Heardman's supervisor contacted regarding matter. Ms. Laura Zazakis reported that the Appraisor followed the Fannie Mae guideline that required a property search over a 6 month period in the areas of homes being sold. Ms. Zazakis stated the other appraisor did not follow Fannie Mae guidelines by during one year search in area. I informed Ms. Zazakis that the home at the corner of our block sold for $128, 000.00 at a reduced rate to sale the home. I contacted Fannie Mae regarding their appraisal policies. I was informed that the above policy do not exsist. Fannie Mae do not know where Ms. Zazakis is receiving her information. I contacted Ms. Zazaki regarding the non exsiting policy and Huntington Bank decline my loan. Please help correct this matter. Huntington Bank should keep their word and provide me with this refinance.
