WARNING! HOTEL WILL ROB YOUR ROOM! It saddens me to have to submit a complaint regarding my stay at Iberostar Cozumel, but I feel it may protect future victims of theft. I traveled with a group of six to Iberostar Cozumel and enjoyed a week of vacation. On the night before checking out, my room was robbed while my wife and I were at a dinner reservation on the resort. There was no sign of forced entry. My iPad, cash, computer equipment and a few personal items were missing. As a banker of 15 years, I am very conscious of physical security and of making sure that doors are locked. When I reported this ‘inside job’ theft to the hotel management, I was given the ‘run around’ and assured that the key card door swipe record showed no sign of a staff member opening the door during this time. I was told that I should have kept all valuables in the small safe in the room. This safe was the size of a shoe box, and was already full to the top. There simply wasn’t enough room for all items of value. Speaking with resort diving instructors and lifeguards, they explained to me that this practice of stealing from guests on their last night in the hotel was common practice. The ‘managers’ of the hotel can see your reservation for dinner, rob you while you are out, then count on the fact that you are hurried with packing and getting on your flight back home. This hotel has a nice system running with the managers and employees working together to steal from patrons. When challenged, the hotel’s position is simply that “Sorry Sir, you must have left your room door unlocked”. This is completely ridiculous seeing as that the doors lock automatically upon being shut.
