I noticed higher than normal ATT phone bills so I called ATT to inquire. Apparently a company called InfoCall had charged three months worth of service charges to my ATT phone bill. I didn't even know who the heck InfoCall was?! The ATT rep told me they would put a block on future charges to my bill and reverse those that I was billed for. In order to cancel InfoCall service, however, I'd need to call InfoCall directly. I called InfoCall and asked the rep who they were, how they got my info, and why they were charging me for their service. She told me that their records don't reveal if I'm using the service or not, they simply have a form completed by me that contained my name, address, phone and email. I asked her to fax me a copy of the form so I could verify my signature but she told me that the signature is an electronic one. So I asked how they could bill me for a service that I didn't authorize? Then she told me that they email a 30 day cancellation notice. If I fail to respond to the notice within the 30 days then it is the same as agreeing to their service. I told her again that I have never heard of them before and therefore never inquired about their service in any way before today. I then asked if they solicited their service through an opt-out approach. This means that you fill out a form to receive information about something completely different, but their is a small box that requires you to uncheck it somewhere on the form. If you don't uncheck it then you've signed up for something without realizing it. She explained that it's possible one of their affiliates use this method but they have no control how their affiliates advertise the InfoCall service. After some more going back and forth I was finally connected to her supervisor who explained that they would cancel the service for me but that I wouldn't be reimbursed since ATT had reversed the charges. I told her it wasn't the money, it was the principal. I told her I felt completely betrayed by them and wanted to know more about the company because I was considering legal action. Then she asked me to verify the info they had on me. She asked if my name was right - correct. Asked if my address was right - correct. Then she asked if my email address was right - close but I use yahoo and she read it as an aol.com address. Then she said that since they didn't have my correct email address, I couldn't have received a conformation email (30 day cancellation notice) and therefore I had not truly subscribed to their service. What??? So she's claiming that I knowingly filled out a form, supplied all the right information about myself and then mistakenly typed in an incorrect email address? I'm positive that this claim is to protect them from some type of legal recourse and I plan on finding out what it is - thankfully my cousin works for a consumer rights and protection law firm in Chicago... Oh, I also asked that they mail me a hardcopy of my cancellation. She said they would do so. I'm awaiting that notice of cancellation to a service that I didn't know existed, been charged for, and then told I wasn't legally bound to since they couldn't send me a 30 day cancellation notice... Can't wait to talk to my cousin! ALWAYS REVIEW THE CHARGES ON ANY BILL YOU RECEIVE AND CHECK ALL FORMS FOR OPT-OUT'S THAT COULD SIGN YOU UP FOR SOMETHING YOU DON'T WANT! What a scam!!!
