Kaplan University Reviews

Fraud
I enrolled in Kaplan University for my BA in Criminal Justice in 2008. It seemed like a great deal and my admissions advisor told me that I could set up payments each month. As I finished my first semester, I started to get collection calls from Kaplan on a daily basis telling me that I owed far more than what I was originally told. As the calls continued, they kept telling me I would be dropped from the school for non-payment even though I was still paying the set $350/month. All of my calls to tuition and financial aid were directed to a person who was never at their desk and their voicemail was full so you could not leave a message. I ended up spending so much time working overtime to afford the school, I didn't have time to finish my school work. I decided to drop my classes. That was when things went from bad to worse. They contacted me and said they made a mistake and refunded my tuition but were working on getting it fixed. Then the calls from their collection agency started, saying that it was no mistake, they had to refund it by law and that Kaplan just said that to get me off the phone. NEVER, EVER, EVER, enroll in Kaplan University.

Fraudulant Charges
Students that are thinking about enrolling BEWARE!!!, They are liars and cheats and will ruin your chance of an education, your credit and you will pay dearly to get your transcripts back. They do not have educated people in Financial Aid. And when you figure their scam out they will not return emails or phone calls.

I was almost done with my Bachelor's in Criminal Justice when they locked me out of classes and told me I owed them $9, 000.00, I was horrified. What about my Pell Grants and loans? No one could answer that question except Financial Aid. They would not even return a call to my advisor. In the end I have lost. They reported me to a collection agency which is now on my credit and will not give up my transcripts. I now have to, along with other Kaplan Students hire an attorney to clear this up.

We need to join forces and file a Class Action Lawsuit. They are using our money for T.V. ad's to get more innocent victims.

TERRIBLE
Kaplan pisses me off!! First of all I finished all of my classes and completed my externship and everything. I was supposed to graduate in August of this year (2009). A few weeks after I completed everything, I get a call from my academic advisor saying that I can't graduate yet because I need to still complete a deficit credit to make up for the credits that did not transfer from my other school. Let me just tell you that every school has at least 3-4 credit classes which is normal, but nooooo they have to go and have 5 credit classes to rip you off. So now I have to stay an extra term and finish this bullshit class in order to graduate. My financial aid Pell grants are on hold for some damn reason and now they say I have to pay like $1, 480 out of pocket for this term!! WTF...I try calling my financial aid officer and she is NEVER NEVER NEVER in her office and never answers her phone, never replies to my e-mails about anything. If she does it's like 1 month later. No one ever answers their phones, and you are always placed on hold. On top of that the deficit credit that I have to do this term I was registered for a week late. So I have to make up a week's worth of schoolwork, and my professor won't grade the work I have done for Unit 1 without proof that my account was disabled. I asked the school to give him proof and I don't even think they did that cause I haven't received a grade yet. I am still waiting for my textbooks which are 1 1/2 WEEKS LATE!! I can't study for exams or do any projects without it! I think they are doing all of this crap on purpose so I fail this class and have to retake it in order to graduate...Well I don't think that is going to happen. I really wish I would have read all of these complaints before I registered here :(

terrible school
I have attended Kaplan for an assocites in criminal justice this school is so unprofessional and there is no one in charge this school has no director, or dean that you can even talk to you you get shuffled around from one moran to another. No one knows anything and can't tell you anything its completely amazing that now I have to get a lawyer to break free of them. This is the worst school I have ever attended they claim to be a accredited school, but I can not even attend a community college with the associates from them what is that .Thanks kaplan for the headache and waste of time . tamara richards

Scam Financial Aid
I enrolled with Kaplan this summer, everything seemed fine but for the past two weeks I have been trying to get some answers in regards to finacial aid and covering my personal expenses. Well as you people know I got the blow off kiss, not once did anyone return e-mail, calls, or the persons I called keep sending me to someone else or not I direct answer to my inquiry. In fact they just stopped and/or ingnored me all together. Well, I know from personal experience having attended college before that if I stop attending they can not use my financial aid if it is before the halfway mark. Since they choose to treat me like a priah and because of all of these complaints I have dropped and I feel some gratification because they will not get any more from me, ha, ha. Do not let this happen to you, what a disappointment.

Financial Aid
I withdrew from Kaplan University in May. I had to withdraw because they never received my transcripts from University of Phoenix. I talked to my Academic advisor about withdrawing because they never got my transcripts. She stated that she will send an email to my financial aid officers (who is useless, never return calls and never return emails). I took two classes from Kaplan University and had to withdraw. The totalled student loans for this school was $6400.00. When I withdrew form Kaplan, I went back to University of Phoenix to pursue my Bachelor degree. My FAO from University stated that I could not received the full amount of FAid because I have an overlapping from Kaplan University. I tried to call this school for 5 days, I always be on hold for about 30 to 45 minutes. You never get a chance to talk to anyone, but the sometimes the academic advisor. To make the story short...they are trying to say that I owe the full amount because I attended the two classes and the lender is not eligible for an refunded back. I talked to this FA officers named Whitney and she stated that they made a mistake about taking the full amount for $6400.00 and my lender would be refunded half of the money back so that I will get funding for University of Phoenix. This should have been taking care of last week, but guess what!!! it was not done. I called and talked to a guy name Shawn (FA counselor) and he stated that the amount was correct and I need to talk to the FAid Officer about cancelling my funds. I thought they did this already when I talk to my academic advisor and that sorry useless FAid Officer about withdrawing and they support to have cancel my loans. I'm disappointed in this school, because they are not on top of their GAMES when it comes down to their students that are trying to pursue a good education in this world. So, I think that I will probably have to pay money out of my pocket for University of Phoenix to received my Bachelor degree in Criminal Justice. I would not suggest this school to anyone. Please make sure that you check out the schools for and their complaints. Because I thought this school was a good school to attended. It was HORRIBLY!!!.

Employee/familiar with FA Fraud
I was a Financial Aid Officer and military specialist for 5 years at Kaplan. I was rescently released from my posistion when i brough to My directors attention the fraud that our department was doing against military personel and veterans. How they certify and package students are not within the guidelines of the VA. They forge documents to clear the federal audits done once a year by the VA. For my first 3 years, they were clean and did verything according to the book. But once they were aware that this was a cash cow for there school, they pushed the enrollment of Vets and military service members, not telling them in detail how to activate there benefits properly, or the turn around time for it to be sent to them. In other words they pushed students to start school knowing id would not be available for at least 60 days, putting the student in debt with the University Causing harrassing phone calls and stress to the student. They also activated multiple benefits illegally. It is illegal to access 2 government aids at the same time. So Gi Bill and TA activated jointly is illegal. this is just 1 of the many things the school does for more money. In order to stay in the legal guidelines of 90/10, they show reprts of TA and Gi Bill, 1607, and 1606. But what is not shown in the reports is that they still activate the students title 4 funding and recieve there TA and the student pockets the GI. So they are not within the 90/10 rule. AGAIN ILLEGAL!! If anybody is trying to post an investigation against kaplan, I can be reached at [email protected] and we can go from there. This is just the tip of the iceberge when it comes to there illegal practices. It is time they pay for there actions. I served in the Air Force and to see my brothers and sisters being used to keep there doors open really ticks me off. Lets make them pay for it.

Idiocy
I have attended Kaplan University since May 2006. I thought I had the best university picked out...until a few weeks ago. I received my Associate degree and continued on to my Bachelor's. I have about 6 months left of my Bachelor's and when my new classes were about to begin...I began having major trouble.

Let's start off with July of 2007. I ended up in the hospital having immediate surgery and missed my weekend of classwork and seminars. I emailed the teachers and they replied with "you're allowed to makeup the work as long as you fill out information for an extended amount of time". I did so and keep in mind I had A's in both my classes. I turned in the late of work and one of the teachers gave me credit. The other one never graded the work and I ended up with a "D"...and was unable to change it. How unfair is that???

I've always tried to keep my patience with calling them because you can never get a hold of your financial aide advisor when you need too (or you academic advisor). I received an email stating that I owed $21.00 to the University and then I would be allowed to start classes.

To make a longer than necessary story shorter, they kept upping the amount. I was then told that I did not apply for a loan when I had needed too so the balance exceeded $2, 000 at this point. The woman on the phone asked me if I had a credit card handy...UM HELLO. If I had that kind of money then I wouldn't need to even have loans...! So I called the financial aide office and was told my f.a. advisor went on vacation. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? The person that was supposed to help left the office and was not supposed to be back until May 25th. Classes had already begun. If anyone has attended this University then you know that if you miss class (blocked out of them even) for 21 consecutive days then you are automatically un-enrolled. So...I was pretty much...how do you say it...screwed?!

You would think that if you paid a school for over three years then they would treat you better. What I have said are not all of the things I have went through with them but I wish luck to anyone that wishes to attend this school. You will get the runaround when it comes to your financial aide...so I believe I would not attend. The classes are ridiculously expensive.

The one thing I did find useful throughout this whole experience is researching. I did learn what I went to school for but is it really worth all of that hassle? Researching taught me to look up information about the school before you go to it. I pity anyone that has to go through it. I have since switched schools. Good luck to all of you.

BAIT and SWITCH
Company uses bait and switch and media hype to lure in new users. Can't bill the VA properly.[min 6 credit hours for half time] Representatives use vulgar and demeaning commentary when they can't get thier way.

Tech support :-) Gott to love them. They have no working knowledge of computer networks, nor how they work. They can't diagnose/fix thier own systems and any comments to fix thier side of the mix gets you nowhere. They continually blame the consumers equipment, even when it is functioning PERFECTLY.

The problem is server side after the switch from comcast level 3 line to att/qwest VPN dsl [apparently, other colleges have a level 3 pipe...] connection.

The reps wont answer emails until you call them first and spend an hour on the phone with them. They swear they will bend over backwards to fix your isses that never get solved. Then they make slanderous commentary torwards you and hide behind 'professional ettiquet'. If I have to tell someone three times to get something done, I'm already walking to thier supervisor's office.

I asked, even demanded to disenroll and have yet to be dienrolled. This was a week ago.As it stands I am suing for slander, if not VA payments for this year plus other funding mistakes as well. If you are a tusdent I STRONGLY SUGGEST you find another university like ITT TEch or U of P or Capella to attend.

Financial Aid Department
Kaplan University has the worst financial aid department I have ever encountered. I enrolled in February of 2009. My enrollment advisor assured me that everything was a go before I enrolled. I immediately was blocked from my classes from the time they first started because of the financial aid department. I have not caught a break from them since. I am constantly receiving emails from the financial aid department saying that I have missing documents and that I will be blocked from my upcoming courses because of it. This is mostly due to the fact that when I fax them the documents they don't update my file. I am half way through my second term and got a bill for almost $3, 000 for my first term. It turns out that my financial aid advisor never applied my financial aid to my account and had me listed as student pay. I have even been in contact with the department of education a few times to make sure that everything was good on their end. I have tried to get in touch with my advisor and her manager on this matter several times this week and have yet to hear from them. I love the way the online set up is at Kaplan, and will probably be stripped of my credits because I can't pay them $3, 00o out of my pocket, but it's about time I cut my losses and move on to another school.
