LA Fitness Reviews

Terrible company
On July 16th 2008 I entered the LA Fitness in Poway and wanted to cancel my membership. I was told that I had until the 15th of August 2008 to do so.

On August 13th 2008 I went in to cancel membership and was told that I needed to send in a cancellation form and that it has to be in 20 days before cancellation and then be charged for another month of dues. I was never informed that the notice has to be sent registered mail and was fortunate enough to find this information out when I was reading many other complaints regarding cancellations.

Jacuzzi is always out of order
I've been a member for two years now and every now then their jacuzzi is out of order. I have arthritis and lower back problems which is why I joined to the gym to begin with, they try fixing it and it goes out again. I was told they run the jacuzzi all day long. Which I feel is unnecessary, since they do close at night. Should someone be able to turn it off at and maybe it wouldn't break down as often.

Locker Room Robbery
Beware of being robbed. My Locker was broken into in a matter of minutes after I went to the pool. The door to the locker was forced opened and my wallet was stolen. Three other guys lockers were broken into at the same time. This had to be a team job and no one from LA Fitness saw or heard anything!

There were at least 5 LA Fitness employees at the from desk and no one had any idea of what happened.

I can't believe that LA Fitness doesn't take some responsibility to protect members. I feel scared to go back to this club. To get in you need a electronic id so doesn't mean this was done by members.

Unethical practice
LA Fitness - It's always overbooked and can not get the court time, can not get on the machines, and locker rooms are small. I had membership for several years and I wanted to freeze the membership to avoid paying the initiation fee, again. LA Fitness is charging me $25 per 3 months and if I unfreeze before three months is up. They will charge me to unfreeze the membership. So, I am cancelling my membership and I going to send email to all my friends to follow me and cancel the membership with LA fitness. One word to describe them, "thieves".

Terrible experience
We are senior individuals (60 and 55) and just joined LA Fitness. They said we had to take an 'orientation' to learn about the club. Unfortunately, due to business travel my wife did this on her own. The 'orientation' turned out to be a high pressure sales pitch for personal training.

When I called, my wife was distraught and said she signed for 12 personal fitness sessions for $ 550 and we would lose 50 % of this if we canceled. The wife took one session and decided it was too much and she would have a hard time doing two/month for six months. I told her to cancel and take the hit.

Upon my return from business, I had a letter from LA Fitness stating that 'I' had 8 personal fitness sessions scheduled per month for 6 months. I got my wife to produce a copy of the contract she had signed (but apparently not read), and realized they had signed her for 48 sessions at a cost of $ 2549, $ 549 of which had already been billed. (By the way... These automatically renew!!)

These contracts are written tougher than you would get from a used car salesman, and once LA Fitness has you, apparently their business model is 'no mercy'. By the terms of the contract, LA Fitness was 'nice' enough to allow us to cancel for another $ 1000. On April 7, my wife canceled both the membership and fitness training sessions, figuring to cut our losses.

I called tonight (April 9) to see if I could reason them down to a lesser amount since $ 1550/ hour seems a ridiculous amount and found that they had not canceled either as instructed, although on April 7 they said they had. The telephone operator told me they needed $ 1000 from me BEFORE they would accept my cancellation!! He said he could accept an over the phone payment. Until this amount was received, I would continue to be billed and he was trying to save me money by avoiding future billings.

I told him that I wouldn't pay except after receiving a written invoice from him for the amount they felt was fair and confirmation that I was no longer bound by the contract. He stated that their accounting structure could not invoice and insisted on a complete phone payment first or they would continue to bill. I then informed him that the credit card he has on file for me is no longer valid (I have killed it), and if he wanted payment of any sort, he had better learn to invoice.

We ended agreeing to disagree...

I have no idea where I am on this now but will certainly be talking with an attorney. Health clubs (at least in this area) are very competitive. I know my wife was stupid to have signed a contract without reading it, but anyone who picks this health club had better be really wary!

Scam and cheating
Shante Hicks, a sales person, mislead me on the levels of the yoga class on Sunday. For two weeks the yoga and palates classroom was closed for two weeks for repairs. Neither online nor on print out they gave me is said that yoga class is advanced. While managers when I complained about classes pace told me that it is advanced class. During the Sunday yoga class we didn't have time for mind and body connection whatsoever and you can forget about stretching your muscles. This class is about jumping up and down from the mat and changing positions fast. The trial period is too short, if you work full time in addition to your part-time job, have family responsibilities, sick relatives, and also going to graduate school then LA Fitness isn't going to accommodate your needs. I didn't even have a chance for the first month of my membership to meet with personal trainer because it was end of semester and too much work. I hoped that after all the craziness ends I will be able to take care of myself, but LA Fitness wouldn't care. When I called member service manager, Stacy Bantle, she transferred me to some gentlemen who was extremely rude. I'm very unsatisfied with the service. They denied paying me back my initiation fee and said that it's my problem that I cannot jump up and down with their excellent yoga instructor. I was transferred from one person to the other and when I called the corporate office I was told that I hanged up on the local management, which was a total lie.

Total scam
La Fitness is a sub-standard gym. They don't care about the customer and they make it difficult to cancel your membership even if you have frozen your account. They require you to send cancellation via certified mail and if you're lucky they may stop billing your account after 2 more months. Their desk staff is rude and ill-trained and they only pay their fitness instructors $12 a class. Typical corporate money-grubbing rip-off artists. Do yourself a favour and join a family owned and operated gym that actually cares about their staff and their clients.

monthly billing NOT frozen at all
I joined LA Fitness back in May 2007 in Katy, Texas. After three months, I requested for my monthly billing be frozen at the front desk and I was told that I'm good to go. Trusting that they indeed froze my billing, I did not check my monthly bank statements until a year later. Disgusted, I went back to the front desk and demanded how this happened but rather I was blamed for failing to check my statements. So, then I asked for total cancellation of my membership right then and there. I am going to check in a few days if it really was cancelled after reading all the complaints here towards LA Fitness. You just cannot trust this fitness center!!!

I will be cancelling my membership
When I joined this gym 5 years ago I was told that there would always be a lane open to swim. Not true, the aqua classes will take the lane and use it to walk in and not let anyone swim. Management is horrible and allows this to happen. This gym is also very dirty and there is mould everywhere. The workers can not speak English and are all illegal. This gyms manager Valerie is always wanting to help out and make things better but unfortunately her other manager only cares about getting as many members as possible. I will be cancelling my membership.
