Scammed on personal training
My wife joined and was given a hard sell billed as an orientation to sign up for personal training. This turned out to be an automatically renewing contract which would cost $ 5000 / yr.
She did not actually read it and stupidly signed!
Once your name is on the dotted line, you are dead! They refuse to let you off except by the contract terms which are for 50 % of the remaining cost. At 50 % of the first 6 months (which I calculated as $ 1250), this is pretty expensive, but LA Fitness figures this at $ 1550 since the first month somehow doesn't count as remaining. This has so far cost me $ 1700 without actually having a personal training session. (The wife tried to schedule one, but the trainers are never available - and if you don't get them in, you also pay.)
Same problem in quitting my membership. Sent written notice by certified mail (as they require) and still they try to charge my credit card for monthly dues.
No toll free number - no customer service. Their marketing philosophy seems to be to offer a low price and "month to month" contract and then scam you for anything they can.
If you join just say NO, NO, NO, and don't bother to take any "orientations". If you quit, cancel whatever credit card you gave them immediately and be sure to send the cancel notice by registered mail as they will be sure to "lose" it. If someone says they will "take care of cancelling" over the phone, tape it because I can assure you they are lying.
Even though you can never contact them by phone without being on hold for an hour, be prepared to get twice daily phone calls from them on your cell.

Don't sign any contracts with LA Fitness
I signed up for three months of personal training. After completing the training, and going through four different trainers because they all quit or were fired, my last trainer told me I was all paid up and everything was taken care of. They have now deducted over $600 out of my checking account because I didn't cancel in writing 30 days prior to my last session. The management was extremely rude and they say there is nothing they can do about it. Now I have eight more training sessions I don't want and can't get my money back.
Don't trust the sales people and whatever you do -
Don't sign any contracts with LA Fitness!!!

Health Conditions
I am a member of LA Fitness located at 35009 Enchanted Parkway South, Federal Way 98003 - telephone number: 253-838-5900. This business closed their pool on 5/1/08 due to unsafe water levels. They reopened the pool on 5/5/08, even though the pool water problem still existed. They allowed lap swimming and over 25 people were in the water for the water aerobics class. The manager was aware of the water's condition prior to opening the pool on 5/5/08. I spoke with Lindsey Argo at the LA Corporation Office. I told her of the health issues surrounding the people who were exposed to their pool. She offered to refund the days the pool was closed under the condition that she froze my account to only pool access. This is unacceptable. One person having a medical reaction to their pool could result in a huge lawsuit. The unclean water of LA Fitness' pool exposed all swimmers to disease. I called LA Fitness the morning of 5/5/08 and was told by their representative that the pool’s water problem had been solved and that the pool was safe to use. It was not and LA Fitness knowingly allowed its members to swim in an unhealthy pool. Additionally, I have a contract with LA Fitness where they take my money and I am suppose to have access to their pool. This is a contract violation.

They scammed me
An LA Fitness was opening near my workplace, so I decided to sign up and take advantage of early registration rates. I signed the paperwork and paid them an early registration fee.
The club did not open on time. It eventually opened, well over a year late. In that year, my company decided to move. Since I knew it was moving, but did not know where, and the club would no longer be convenient, I attempted to call to cancel my early registration.
I was told I would be able to cancel at any time with no penalty, so why not keep it in case my company moved near another branch? This seemed fair, so I stupidly kept it.
We moved. Not near an LA Fitness. And the last thing on my mind at the time was my fitness membership I had registered for *over a year ago*. Then several months later, I got a call. They were having trouble billing me.
What? Why is LA Fitness *billing me*. I never set foot inside an LA Fitness. My membership was never activated. Oh, they explained, after the club opens, they activate your membership and bill you, whether you've ever been to a club or not. If I want to cancel it, I'd have to write in and pay for what I'd already accrued. I refused. The phone guy told me he'd talk to his manager who would call me back. No one called me.
Several months later, it's now 2008. (I signed up in January 2006!) They call me. They're having trouble billing. I patiently explain what I already told them before. They tell me that I can cancel, but I'll have to pay a 30 day fee. I tell them no. The guy tells me my membership agreement requires me to. I ask to look at a copy and he says it is on the website. (If it is, it is hidden in their member’s only area. Which I don't have access to because I never signed up for any of this.) I call him back and get an answering machine.
A few minutes later another guy calls, this one from the specific branch I had joined. I explain the same thing. He gives me the number of the manager of Membership Services, Tim. Thanks. I call Tim. Tim explains that they *are* charging me already and that I did use the club in November. I have never been there. And the date he gave was when I was on the east coast. I check my credit card. Damnit, somehow they found a way to charge me when they couldn't before, and I hadn't caught it.
I'm writing to their headquarters right now, but as it's currently looking, it seems that they will now have taken hundreds of dollars of my money. And I have still never even set foot inside an LA Fitness.

Terrible experience!
Recently my wife learned that LA Fitness has been withdrawing funds out of one of our accounts since 2005. They have on record of me calling several times complaining yet, they have continued to withdrawal funds. As a result my wife went down for a face to face to get this resolved, Jennifer (club mgr, was very respectful & courteous) But Doug Sanches who does not have a physical address nor his number available to the public stepped in and began to accuse my wife of false identity and became insulting. I have left several messages with La Fitness for either Doug to meet me at one of the clubs he's in charge of or call me. This has allowed me time to further investigte LA's procedures on terminating an account. I plan on filing criminal charges & a complaint with the not only the BBB but Consumer Affairs as well, I also plan on gathering as many as I can to begin a possible class action suite. If you go to their legal web page, you'll learn that there are NO procedures listed for opting out of their membership, only a suspense. By the time I am done with them they will have spent thousands more trying to defend themselves with either legal briefs, representation to the answering of inquires, let alone lost time filing out paperwork, answering phone calls, being court.

Member cancellation!
A member of La Fitness since 2002 Hassel Daniel F1601043. I train three times a week at 530 am with three other friends, on Wednesday 9th April 2008 we did our routine workout, afterwards William a personal trainer from body of change accuse me of training others i informed him that i have being a member since 2002 have a great time working out with my friends and if the trainers will repack the weights after working out their clients and being around so that when members have a problem to help and maybe pick up a new client, instead of trying antagonize members. This information was pass on to the VP of the personal trainers who herself seems lost. The personal trainers have to stop looking to accuse members who are trying enjoy an environment of out dated equipment. Four other members of my family are members of La Fitness and we are strongly considering the other competitive gyms in the area.

Bait and switch!
10 days ago I joined LA fitness. Part of the deal for my family membership was that my 14 year old twin boys would be able to come basketball every other weekend. Sure enough today when I arrive at the gym, with my boys, I was told they would not be able to play ball. I canceled my membership and the start-up fee of $237 I disputed the charges with American Express. American Express is on my side but this company has deceptive trade practices.

Charges on credit card!
I"m writing this on behalf of my 21 year old son. Robbie survived a MVA on 1/26/2008, but needed a spleenectomy, had a collapsed lung and three broken ribs. While sitting in his hospital room I was going over my list of who I needed to call. On Jan. 30-08 I called LA Fitness to freeze his membership. I was told he was already being billed for February although it was still January. I balked and was told to call a Wendy to get the charge removed. I tried to reach her several times and finally connected on 2-4-08. What a miserable, cold hearted individual. She told me since we did not notify them 30 days prior there was nothing she could do. If I would have known 30 days prior my son would almost lose his life and spend 5 days in ICU 100 miles away from home he would not have left on the ski trip and Wendy would not be known to me. During this conversation not once did she ever extend any sympathy, wish him a speedy recovery not one single word of compassion. It was all cut and dry business as usual. I can't believe this person is working in a customer service type of business. What a horrible horrible uncaring individual. I have been on hold for 1 1/2 hrs trying to contact the corporate office. Future LA Fitness members beware they could care less about you it's all about the mighty dollar and I guess my son's $24.99 is going to keep the company afloat.

Personal training program is the worst!
I have utilized personal trainers for the last 6-7 years. When a new LA Fitness opened in my town with a beautiful facility I switched my membership and signed up for their personal training program. I had a great trainer the first few weeks and then one week I went in and was told she was sick, the next week I was told she stood me up and the third week the receptionist finally whispered to me that she had been fired because she did not know how to run their computer system. I complained to management and they set me up with another trainer. I had a couple of sessions with him but he was disinterested and just going through the motions and I could never get a regular schedule set up. Then I ask for a different trainer and approached one who had just started. Before I could schedule a session she was gone. I tried in vain to cancel but as you know from previous posts, you can never never get a straight answer and the customer service is the worst. I was told to write letters and then was told that was not enough because the letters were not certified. Then I got another session and was stood up. And it happened again. And bottom line is I had to pay for a year of training when they could not provide me with an early morning trainer and did not even care enough to follow up when they knew I was being stood up. ( about 6-7 times) They are the WORST!

Hour of operation!
The gym used to be opened until midnight on the weekends, then 11pm, then 10pm, NOW 9pm! 10 was justifiable but 9pm is uncalled for. Not to mention, they sold people on this gym and signed them up telling them the gym would be opened (WITH POOL USED AS A SELLING POINT) by "next month" offering a small room with a few machines. They continued to do this for 1 FULL YEAR until the gyms long overdue grand opening finally took place and the facilities were open (which by the way they have advertised "Grand Opening" for yet another year - WITHOUT POOL). The pool has finally been put in not more than a month ago. it took them 2 years of selling (lying) people on THE POOL until it was finally installed.
Plus, the trainers are A JOKE!
ps - Yet I still go...
