Lawn Gone
October 19, 2010
Poor service
We've had the local Lawn Doctor for a few years with mediocre service and mediocre results. This year, like many homeowners in our area, our lawn suffered leaf blight because of the relentless, dry conditions. However, we also had a bumper crop and variety of broadleaf weeds. We also had a grub infestation. The local representative was not proactive in any sense of the word and did not meet with me in person to discuss our situation, even though I specifically requested that meeting at least twice. Instead, he visited my neighbor and took a cursory look at our lawns at that time. Now the errors: He said after inspecting the lawn that we had no grub problem. A week later my wife was able to find them. Their response to learning of that was a defensive note by the owner that "if they had bought grub control last fall they wouldn't have had the problem." The problem is, they advised lime treatment as a means of controlling grubs which we did have them do. They had no explanation as to why a major crop of weeds had taken over the lawn. I finally sent 19 photos of the damage to Lawn Doctor headquarters in New Jersey. When I called them after they left a phone message wanting to talk to me, I was told that they have no control over or recourse to address issues with our local Lawn Doctor. After repeating essentially that same message several times, their representative Sheila offered to write a letter to the local franchisee on my behalf. I did not get a copy of the letter, but the local LD did apparently receive a "grievance complaint" and claimed that the weather had been too wet to come out and spray the weeds. It was also at that time that I got the accusation that the grub problem was our fault. Bottom line, they like to deal remotely and care little about customer satisfaction. In frustration, I called another, local lawn care business who came out in a day to meet with me. Their professional opinion was that that about 90% of the lawn needed to be torn up, the ground tilled, and new topsoil put down. They indicated that "using chemicals" in the heat of summer can destroy the grass. In short, our lawn was a near total loss, courtesy of a careless and uninterested Lawn Doctor franchisee. Never again will I assume that a "big name" means customer satisfaction.
